i have never colored my hair... and anytime i tell my friends im going to! theyre like 'no dont!' 'it damages your hair'...'your hair wont be the same'... 'why dont bother, too much maintenance' my hair ist just dark brown...its really silky straight...i can never curl it, because they open so quick! i want to experiment with a lighter shade of brown perhaps... im still unsure..
p.s- any salon you highly recommend..nassau county only!

Re: Hair Coloring
Ive dyed my own hair and highlighted my own hair-never ever had a problem. DYing your hair in general ruins your hair. But I will be honest the only reason I regret dying my hair is b.c the upkeep is annoying and I want my old color back.
Otherwise-the damage is non existant-at least to the touch-my ahir has always been dry

Re: Hair Coloring
I only dye mine to cover grays. I have dark dark brown hair so the grays are soooo noticeable. I would say if you don't have any grays to cover and only want to lighten the brown a bit, then go for highlights, not an all-over dye job. Highlights will just enhance your natural color with some lighter, brighter strands.

I agree. I've been coloring regularly for about 7 years now, to cover all the gray. You can start with half-head highlights, and then go from there if you like it. As for damage, I condition regularly and don't use a flatiron on my hair. I try to be gentle with it.

Re: Hair Coloring
i havent dyed my hair since HS
honestly, i just cant keep up with it. my hair grows in so fast and it would look terrible most of the time
i am not the type of girl that goes to the salon every month for a trim, i usually go twice a year - yeah it gets bad but i dont care. . . so i HATED having to go and spend the time and money every two months. . .it was SO HARD to grow out and it looked terrible for so long so now its all natural and i love it.
i will dye it to cover greys when the time comes, now i have a few but if i get a patch like Stacy London i am totally rocking it!!!

Re: Hair Coloring
My hair is like three different colors! I leave the inside a dark brown. Then the base is almost like a caramel with blonder highlights. You just reminded me to make a hair appointment!

Re: Hair Coloring
i've been dying and highlighting my hair since I'm 13` -- it all started with Sun In -- when that ruined my hair the saga of dying and highlighting began...
DON'T DO IT! Leave your hair alone!!!

Re: Hair Coloring
i only color to cover grays.. if i didnt have to then i probably wouldnt..
if you really want to do it - i suggest uses a semi permanent dye or a rinse if the purpose is not to cover grays(need permanent dye for that!) and its less damaging to the hair..
if your hair is dark then go for low lights versus highlights - JMO.. they'll be less obvious and will brighten up your color...

Re: Hair Coloring
I've done only semipermanent dyes... haven't done it in YEARS though.
I used Joseph from J&co. in cedarhurst.. which changed to 'new beginnings' which is now something else. I can't keep up!
Kim who works there cuts my hair and is fantastic! I've been using her since I was a little kid.. and Joseph is great with color.
The semi-perm. colors never damaged my hair. They gradually lighten over time so I would never get bad roots or anything, which is good because I can NEVER keep up with the maintenance! (which is why i stopped doing it in the first place).
I tried highlights too, but I never liked how they looked on me!

Re: Hair Coloring
I have done plenty to my hair- dye, highlights (for my wedding and loved them-Looked liek Eva Mendes ).I have bleached it, redyed it 2x in one week...CRAZY stuff and yes I admit its not as thick as when i was a kid pre-dye and processing BUT I still have a ton of hair and its still silky and not any coarser than it ever was.
A good TRAINED stylist will not damage your hair. I like dye and haircutts....Hair is an accessory/

Re: Hair Coloring
i dye my hair and highlight it - natura color was jet black and i've been a dark blonde for about 7 or 8 years now.
if you want to have lighter hair i too suggest starting w/ lowlghts - since you have dark brown hair i wouldn't suggest highlights unless they're not too light cuz they'll really stick out.
i'll be honest though - it IS a pain to keep it up!

Re: Hair Coloring
I've never dyed my hair. I cap on highlights every few months so that I still have mostly my natural color, but I lighten it up throughout as well.

Re: Hair Coloring
My hair is all natural now, but you name it, I've tried it! Perms, dyes, highlights...
I think it depends on the texture of your hair, mine is super fine. I was highlighting it for a few years and then it started breaking and falling out. I had a hot oil treatment, and that helped some. Finally, I got tired of it. Plus, I didn't want to spend the money on upkeep while I was wedding planning.

Re: Hair Coloring
I have done all the above. My older sis went to cosmitology school when she was 18 so I was he test dummy... Before the wedding I had blonde highlights put in. But now DH just dies my hair my natural color every 2 months to cover up those grey hairs I am beginning to get...

I agree, your hair is really pretty, but I understand wanting a change. I've been dying my hair at home since I was 14 to cover grays. I've gotten hi-lites a couple of times, but It is a PIA to maintain.
