Has anyone ever been through this....Help!

Hi girls,

Haven't been around in a while. But I started a new job back in november and and I don't know if I would call it 'sexually harrassed' or not, but it definitely made me uncomfrotable and scared. I work up at the front desk in guest services in a very known place and company, and since we're able to eat all the meals complimentary - we all take turns and we go into the kitchen to grab some food. Well one day last week or 2 weeks ago, I went to go scrape off my plate and throw it in the sink, and one of the kitchen guys just grabbed my side out of nowhere and he smiled and i just didn't like it. It made me feel very very uncomfortable. Now, ever since that happened,I did tell my supervisor, but he didn't tell the main general manager or my immediate manager, and I feel reluctant to tell, since its made me very uncomfortable and very nervous and a bit scared. I work at a hotel, so the other night, my husband & I stayed over because I worked a weird shift and I came out of my room, and went into the kicthen and got another cup of coffee, and again, he was staring at me, like GAWKING at me and just wouldn't stop. Then, when I hurried back to my room, he practically followed me, and I quickly slammed the door.

I definitely need this job for now. I just DON'T have any clue what to do. It really makes me feel uncomfrotable to the point where I don't want to go to work, nor do I want to even go into the kitchen to grab a quick snack.

What do I do?

You should immediately report this to your manager/regional manager. No one should make you feel uncomfortable in your place of work. It's inappropriate and should definitely be reported - they are responsible for making the work environment safe. So sorry you're going through this!!!

First of all, sorry you're going through this. What a scary & uncomfortable situation.
Second of all, tell, tell, tell. The higher-ups need to be made aware of what is going on.

I would definitely tell whoever can fire him. You don't need to be feeling violate, scared and harrassed at work.

Tell your immediate supervisor, their supervisor and make it known IN WRITING to human resources.
Give human resources full details including date and time and make it a formal complaint.
If nothing gets done about this, then you can take this to the next level and file a police report.

The best thing to do is start a paper trail, so you have something to fall back on, god forbid, you should need to do so in the future.

You should not have to feel intimidated and harrassed in your workplace.

eta:
Next time you encouter this guy, just yell at him to back off and keep his distance ! This will let him know you mean business. Don't appear frightened or this may just spur him on to continue his behavior.

Agree completely. And in my read of the sexual harassment statutes, yes, this qualifies as harassment. You need to seek our your supervisors and the manager immediately. If they don't act, they are also culpable and you could sue the entire place. Put EVERYTHING in writing in addition to verbally saying something.

But you definitely need to appear strong in front of this creep. Acting afraid will only egg him on it seems.

FM if you need anything!

ITA! if u're feeling uncomfortable THERE'S A REASON FOR IT. Start by making SURE ur supervisor tells the higher-ups...and start a log. Write down these incidents with the dates & times & maybe even have ur supervisor sign each page so there's proof that u've been speaking to him about it......& continue to do so. ANY incident that occurs, even if it's just him gawking at u & making u feel uncomfortable - log it. that way u have record of everything. in the meantime do everything u can & speak to whoever u can about taking care of the situation. i'm so sorry u're dealing with this

i agree with all the ladies...
you should definetly go to the higher up and make sure they dont take this lightly and blow you over. dont take that from anyone..nobody should make you feel that uncomfortable , let alone TOUCHING you..

please be careful and report this ASAP..

Listen to Suse! Start documenting the days and the times AND who you told and when and how the behavior has continued. You want a paper trail. NO ONE has the right to amke you feel uncomfortable. Go with your gut. If he gets no reprimand, he is going to think it is ok.

Good luck!

ITA, there is no reason you should feel that way at work-let alone EVER!!! You want to document it all in case they try to push it off and ignore it. IM sorry you are going thru this, you shouldnt have to

I am sorry that this happened to you.. I can imagine how scary and unsafe you must feel.. I would speak to maybe someone above your immediate boss and tell them exactly what's been happening.. You do not need to have your safety in jeopardy for ANY reason

Re: Has anyone ever been through this....Help!

the same thing happened to me...

i used to work in a restaurant and would go to the kitchen from time to time to get my meals, pass by to get to the office, etc...this one bus boy was such a sleeze ball...you know how just by the way someone LOOKS at you, you get the creeps? that was this guy. he was such a dirtbag. he made me feel incredibly uncomfortable. enough girls got together to make a complaint about him that he was reprimanded and strictly told NOT to give ANY girl ANY look. i dunno if other co-workers feel this way, but sometimes, complaints in numbers work. try finding out if anyone else feels this way so you can 'gang up' on mgmt and make them relaize this dude is a jerk. in the end, write down your complaint, and make them realize that you're serious about how icky this dude makes you feel!

YES!!!
And because I work in a hotel, it really creeps me out. I only stay there when my husband agrees to stay but its an upscale hotel, ya know?
it justs the way he's been looking at me also.

and i told my supervisor yesterday about the constant stares and he said 'it isnt right.' but he never told me to tell my manager or general manager so i dont know if he told them or what.

i just dont want my managers to think im complaining especially since i had to sit down with my manager last week and talk about my hours and she couldn't help me. (i needed better hours for school) and she couldn't really accomodate my request (which was BS alltogether.) because I think im treared differently because i have a hearing problem... so i feel like if i say 'Can i talk to u?' to my manager, she might thing im just trying to be annoying or probably making it up or something..i dunno.

I just dont like being made uncomfortable and I definitely dont like being stared at like Im some eye candy!!!

Sounds like a bad situation:

Try telling him OUTRIGHT: 'Listen, I don't like to be touched....don't touch me'

Can't do much about looks, though. That's why it's hard to take care of.

If you have a hearing impairment you are covered under the Americans with Disabilities Act and then then REALLY can't mess with you. And if they are ignoring your complaints/concerns, you have a case to bring there, too.

Don't be afraid to speak up. Be straight with her and say 'I have a serious problem with another employee. It's a sexual harassment issue.' Seriously, if they aren't listening after that, there are larger issues that need to be addressed.
