Has anyone seen the movie 'Eastern Promises'? ****SPOILERS*****
i'm so effing bored waiting for 5 pm--figured i'd post a random thing
i was watching it last nite--kind of an independent film---it stars Viggo Mortensen (Aragorn in the lord of the rings trilogy)---and well -- there is a scene in it i was just not ready for. lets just say for like 2 min. he is naked fighting these guys and well---he goes full monty ladies. the twig an berries are flopping around all over the place and you catch glimpses of the goods many times over.
i was surprised cause most actors aren't brave enough to show their junk......i think more should.
thoughts?

I saw the movie and yeah that scene totally caught me off guard too. I didnt think that there was too much exposure in it though where i would say that its inappropiate for an over 18 adult to watch, but i was definitly surprised by it only b/c like you said, most men wouldnt do something like that. Were more used to seeing women undressed in films than men.

we saw this movie, but we knew to expect that part. you gotta give it up to Viggo, he was looking pretty hot in that movie, (however, not nearly as good as he did in LOTR - The Two Towers - drool!). anyway, i digress......i really don't know what the stigma is about male frontal nudity. i will be the first to say that there is really nothing remotely attractive about a limp dk, so who really cares if anyone sees it or not!! it's not sexual when it's limp, JMO. maybe male actors feel their manhood will be judged by their limpness

Are you asking about what we thought about the movie, Mel or the twigs and berries? I mean both were good BUT to be fair the only reason his was showing was because the scene took place in a bath house and they were struggling in a life or death match so a towel would never have feasibly stayed on.
But the movie definetly touched on a lot of darker topics. i didn't care for the violence but it was direceted by the same guy who did A History of Vi9olence starrign Viggo.
Did you understand the ending? That confused me a lot. Crap wait did anyone NOT see it because I dont want to ruin it with a spoiler....

Yes. We rented it, pre-oscar buzz not knowing anything about it--I liked it, but was caught off guard by the naked fighting

yeah i totally got the ending. obviously viggo's character is DEEP undercover in this russian mobb (a la donnie brasco) -- possibly for years---and he must have been trying to reach the top of the mafia--and while he wanted to help out naomi watts and the baby, he didn't want to blow his cover either. obviously causing a huge confliction on his part.
as for the twig & berries---i could care less about it. matter of fact--bring it on!!! but i was just surprised that such a big name actor would be brave enough to show the bits & pieces. i him for it.
ETA: i really did love the movie---it was dark & twisted and i love that. david cronenberg movies always are....which is why i love his flicks

I loved the film but the ending was really not the best imo. The ending was way too rushed but its still an excellent film.
At the end he takes over the Russian Mafia and replaces the 'godfather' of it or whatever you want to call it, in order to try and elimnate the corruption in the black market by arresingt/killing those that are involved. He does it under cover ofcourse though.

Ok just saw you put SPOILERS so im running with it.
What did you guys think of the ending? Like I get that Viggo was playign double agent. he was working for the police/government trying to take the Russian mob down. We learned that after the scene in the tbath house where he was almost killed.
But the very end confused me. Like he got the baby back and the son of the Russian mobster was obviously gay and had a deep affection for Viggo but did Viggo turn him in too? Like that part where the bad guy is crying and Viggo pulls him close and says his father is going away and then he runs off and Viggo says goodbye to Naomi Watts and then the last scene of Viggo is him in the club dressed to the nines, insinuating he is now the Godfather? But was he corrupt? Or were theu insinuating he got in too deep and couldn't get out?
I remember them mentioning that the tattoos on a man's body in the russian mob tells his story for all the world to see and now that he ahd the stars he would always be affilaited with the mob.
It was just confusing but good.

i think that the son, Kirill---was weak and would not make a good leader. Viggo's character understood this and ultimately it was about getting the father out of the way and eventually he would get control of the mobb from the top....since the son would probably be easy to get rid of.
the ambigious question they leave you with---did he become corrupted during his time undercover and wants to stay in it.....or will he destroy the mob from the inside out ? i liked that it wasn't super neat in a bow.

that's exactly how i understood it too. DH though the ending was weak, i thought it was good, but they could have spared another 5 min. and i prefer to think he'll take them down from the inside, but i thought it looked like he also enjoyed having so much power.

Ok thats what i was thinking too. Krill was easily manipulated and in love with Viggo's char so easy to control but it almsots eemed as you said, they were insinuating he got in over his head. Not that he WANTED to stay in per say, but that he just coudnt get out at this point because he was in up to his neck and the tattoos on his body would forever mark him as a man of the mob even if he got out and had run away with naomi Watts.
I thought the movie itself was well written and directed-makes you think. The violence I could have done without but I am a wuss like that.

the violence was graphic---but i expected it would probably be that way---since Cronenberg loves to shock you like that. 'A History of Violence' had some blood splattering too---but somehow its grizzly and it works in his movies

I liked a History of Violence. I didnt like that his wife totally didnt even ask questions though. Liek she just pegged him as a monster without even a 'WHY' as to everything that happened. Granted it was a CRAZY situation and he DID lie to ehr for all that time, but if you've been with someone for 20 years and they have always been a good husband and a good father, wouldn't you ASK liek W TH is this all about? I would have been screaming for answers and explainations.
I felt it was a little too contrived-her reaction and his son's I mean.
I felt Eastern promises was a little more 'accurate' in terms of the way people behaved if that makes sense.
