Has anyone traveled in South America?

DH and I are thinking of doing this over the summer. Any tips? We are going to go for about 6 weeks, but more of a 'backpack' fashion

Re: Has anyone traveled in South America?

hey girl...
that sounds AWESOME!

i was in Ecuador for a few weeks, but i was taking a bunch of students on a service trip, so i was isolated in terms of touristy things ,but i can point you in the direction of extreme povertyi if you want that!

butseriously, i loved it. the pople are so warm and welcoming. you should go to the Center for Disease Control's Website and see what vaccinations you will need. Certain countries require you to be vaccinated (or rather the US requires you to be vaccinated, so you don't bring it back). For Ecuador, I needed yellow fever, typhoid, hepatitis (i forget which one, but obviously the one we don't get here as often). I also took malaria pills.

granted, i was in areas with extreme pverty and disease, so maybe i needed those because of that, i am not sure. they very well may have been requred for all US travelers regardless.

A friend of mine was in the Peace Corps in Ecuador and loved it.... I've also heard amazing things about Chile and Peru and Argentina.
GOOD LUCK and have a blast...

I have been to Argentina, which was AMAZING!!!
We stayed in Buenos Aires, and did day trips all around the area. We went to the Iguaza Falls, which by far was the coolest thing I've ever seen!
I would definitely recommend Argentina...I've heard great things about Brazil too!

definitely make a stop in Machu Pichu in Peru---its a trek to get to the city in the middle of the jungle.....lots of hiking and such---but from what my father's family has told me--its worth it. being able to travel to the ancient city is amazing!

Costa Rica is looks AMAZING, and its really affordable too. DH has gone a bunch of times and even has a friend who moved there and opened a bar in San Jose :)
He did a backpacking trip in the rainforest with his brother last year and the photos are spectacular. He loves the people there and would go back every single vacation if he could. Which he can't, because I am not so psyched to spend every vacation roughing it.
