Is it just me, or does anyone else get comments all the time like, 'oh you're happy now, but just wait a few years.' Honestly, every time DH and I are happy or hugging or kissing, some crabby married person proceeds to tell us how 'cute' we are and how we don't know it yet, but in a few years we'll hate each other and won't be able to stand being in the same room. If it were just one or two couples I'd think it was just because THEY are unhappy, but literally every married couple laughs at us and says 'you'll see.' It really pisses me off!

No one has ever said that to us. What a horrible thing to say! I'm sorry.

People who are miserable should just keep their comments to their self.

Re: Hating your spouse
I keep getting the 'It's not as great as they say, huh?' ... People keep asking how we are doing and I always say 'great, just settling in together and learning how to live together' (we both lived at home before the wedding) and everyone just keeps telling us - yea, doesn't housework suck, or told you it wasn't fun & games, or whatever .... I never said I didn;t like any of these things. I'm glad it isn;t fun & games ... I'm glad DH & I have to work at our relationship and learn about each others habits and learn to tolerate each others different ways to do things. I love to come home and cook with him while talking about our day and then cleaning up and getting things done. Each day, we take a step closer to becoming more organized, more meshed together.
People are so negative .... newlyweds too ... it just amazes me. Marriage is a wonderful thing, don;t know why people need to put it down (joke or not)

Re: Hating your spouse
I've come across a lot of negative peoplea t school - who make comments about how terrible marriage is....most of them are divorced, so i guess i can understand.... but i found it to be so nasty to say those things when i was engaged! i don't understand it...i guess some people just don't like to see others happy...

Re: Hating your spouse
I get that from some people. It's sad to hear someone say that...but I guess that was their experience.
On the other hand, I have family members and friends who have been married for many many many years (20-30) and just say the most positive things about marriage. Those people are the ones that I listen to!

Re: Hating your spouse
Since announcing our engagement, the guys DH works with all said stuff like that to him. It even made him a little anxious when we were thinking about getting engaged. I think for some men it's a macho thing to talk like that.
PS I sat them all next to the kitchen at the wedding

Re: Hating your spouse
I don't have anybody telling us that we will hate each other in a few years, but my best friend's husband always teases me about all of the household items I use (dishes, appliances, decorations) and tells me that they have it all sitting in their basement. They started off using it all and then it got to be too much work so they use paper plates and the Kitchen Aid mixer is in the closet.

Re: Hating your spouse
i hate that. Another thing I hate is something DH's friend does. He used to be married but cheated on his pregnant wife then they divorced. he hasn't had a stable relationship since. Well, anytime Dh says anything to him about having to run errands, or buy me something, or an argument we had or ANYTHING at all, he goes 'see, now that's why I'm glad i'm not married'. WTH???? Thats a horrible thing to say, and DH is going to say something next time he does that. It's probably because he is bitter because he's alone, but thats no need to put down marriage and our relationship. and those married people who make those comments are just bitter because they aren't happy with their lives. Doesn't mean you won't be.

Re: Hating your spouse
We've had the same thing happen - it makes conversation extremely awkward because you don't agree with the comments and it takes about all I have not to make a smart comment in return. What's more - we even had people say something like that to us while we were at a wedding of my husband's co-worker! I mean - what timing!

Re: Hating your spouse
That's a crappy thing to say!
I've been married over 7 years and if anything, marriage is BETTER now than in the beginning! We're used to each other's quirks, we've learned how to compromise, sure we still fight but if we didn't, that would be weird!
It only gets better, not worse! I feel bad for a couple that says otherwise!

Re: Hating your spouse
I get it all the time cause I answer phones all day for my job (male verizon technicians) and a lot of them are cranky, miserable and married. Their all like 'You are happy now, just wait...' I'm like, why are you still married if you're not happy?

Yeah I can't stand people like that....when someone says crap like that I think of my own parents...who are married over 30 years and very very happy (and mushy at times LOL )

Re: Hating your spouse
I have a single friend who keeps saying........'Everyone tells me that I shouldn't get married and to enjoy my time being single.....etc.etc.' She has said it on more than one occasion, and at first I wouldn't say anything b/c I felt that was her way of dealing with being single. But, she said it one too many times that I finally told her that not every married couple feels that way and that I actually love being married, and that I hope she would be as lucky as I am.
But, it is annoying when people say so types of things!

I really really really hate that too! We've been together for five years and we've always been 'so in love' - I don't see that changing nor do I appreciate other people telling me it will change! They're just jealous!

My Dh especially hates it when we see people and they say 'So? Still married?' and think they are sooooooo funny.

Re: Hating your spouse
I hate that crap so much, and I can't tell you howmany times Craig and I have heard that very same 'advice' too - I think the fact that we both look very young makes these people think we don't know any better and we'll see what it's really like when we grow up..... Last time someone said that to us, I told them, 'Well, it's already been 7 years that we've been together, so I think we'll be fine now that we're married!' So annoying - but I think the people who say these things are the same people who are unhappy in some way in their own marriages, and they are projecting that onto a happy couple to make themselves feel better. It's sad that there are so many people in miserable marriages, at least you and your DH are blessed to have true love and happiness with each other!!
