don't even look at it. I'll be working for another 30 years I'm sure; what goes down will go back up eventually.

That's the same way I look at it. In the long run it will balance out.

You really don't need to worry about that.. You're AT LEAST 35 years away from retirement and the markets fluctuate regularly.

Re: Have you checked your 401K recently?
i told DH last night that he better not even think about looking at his statements. neither am i. i'm leaving my investments just as they are. i think if i was 50 i'd worry a bit more, but i'll be working at least another 30 years, i'm sure i'll gain back what i've lost, and then some.

I refuse to look at my TSP ( government 401K basically ) BUT I opened up an article that listed how down each fund is and I am so mad that I accidentally saw it!!

I won't look--I know it'll be down but I've got many years of working ahead so the way I see it, it's a temporary blip. Now if I were retiring right now.....I'd be

if there's any positive to this, you'll now be getting more shares for your $$, so when the market picks up again, there just might be a nice return to be had.

i had religiously contributed to roth ira for the past 3 years.. it was $$ i didn't have that i wanted to put away.. its down to cents right now.. it disgusts me to even think about it..
i feel terrible for people about to retire.. i just wish everything bounces back to normal in the next few months..

Re: Have you checked your 401K recently?
DH tracks our finances in Quicken and told me how much we lost yesterday....
I'm confident that the market will rebound, and in the meantime we put our wedding gift money into a 6 month CD. We're considering putting some of my savings into the market, but I don't know... I'm not a very risky person...

Re: Have you checked your 401K recently?
dh's has gone down bye $10k BUt his company was also bought by somebody else beginning of the year and they said something about all of it not being available now, so its been like this. He hasnt checked recently and doesn't want to lol. But theres no plans to dip into the 401k anytime soon, you get taxed too heavily on it so its ok. The only thing is that we are using his 401k as liquid assets for a mortgage

Down about 20%.
It's true that you don't need to worry about spending it right now, but it is still good to know b/c: a) you can always switch your investments around if you are involved in something risky and would prefer to get into something more stable and; b) you can take tax tax-free loans from your 401k (though not advisable unless you plan to continue making regular contributions while paying back the loan) and it's good to be aware about whether that option is there based on the balance of your account.

Re: Have you checked your 401K recently?
since you first started this thread i've had to print out my statements twice for our mortgage broker. my sept 30 statement was bad enough, but the oct 31st one was even worse.
it will eventually go back up, but it's going to take time. it certainly won't go back up as quickly as it fell, but it's money for 30 years down the road so i try not even to think about it.
