Have you ever caught your MIL going through your things?

Have you ever caught your MIL going through your things?

My future MIL is coming to visit next week, and I'm totally on edge...

The last time she was here, I caught her snooping through my car...picking up papers I had that were folded and she just unfolded them and reads them!

Then, she thought I was outside and she played back the OLD messages I had saved on my answering maching.

If I have a piece of mail laying around, she unfolds it and reads it, especially if it's a bill.

I can just imagine what I don't see!

Anyone else experience this? How did you handle it? I spoke with FI, and he laughed like, 'Mom is so bad, she so nosey'.....but that's not good enough for me, I don't want her to do that anymore, but I feel funny saying,' Hey Mom, do you mind not going through my things.'

No, my MIL doesnt but my father does that. We live on the same block so he will sometimes accidently get my mail and I will get it back opened. When I call him on it, he says he opened it up by accident - BS!!

I hate it and I always get into a big argument with him. Its not that Im hiding any important info, I just expect my privacy to be respected.

My MIL would never, but my mom always did. I lived in my appt. and invited her when we first moved in, and never again after what she pulled. it was like that my entire life. when I was a teenage her excuse was 'I thought you were doing drugs',

My MIL would never do that at least I don't think she would, she gets mail for hubby in FL and she mails it to us closed. My mom would open mail for that still comes to the house, but I could care less, she says she is checking to see if its urgent

My mother does that, but I totally call her on it all the time...she my mother, I can 'get that way' with her. BUt with my MIL...there's this strange non-closeness, and I would feel so strange bringing it up.

Yes, I told him...and he laughed and rolled his eyes and said his mother is just so unreal.

He said he would talk about it with her, but he didn't.

If I do catch her doing it again, I'll say something, this is just so stupid, and it's really stressing me out! I feel like I have to hide everything.

yes yes yes...
she used to go through my wedding planner to see how much we were paying for our vendors. She has opened our mail...and even opened wedding cards and gifts to us when we werent around. The list goes on. This is why I am so private when it comes to her!

Thank goodness MIL doesn't! Hopefully your DH will be able to say something. Somethings aren't meant for all to see!

my MIL never would. She's very respectful of privacy.

edited to add: I've had the problem with my dad opening my mail - would drive me crazy.

Some of Al's mail that still goes to his parent's house (even though he hasn't lived there in 6 years) gets opened by his dad (but they have the same name, so its confusing).

I don't have in-laws (they both passed away) but I would flip if anyone opened my mail. DH and I don't even open each other's credit card bills. We discuss the totals but that's just for bill purposes.

My ex-husband used to come to my apt. while I wasn't home and get my daughter to let him in. He would then go through my stuff, bills, cc statements etc. He even took the instructions to my answering maching so he could listen to my calls. It was the most horribly invasive feeling. I ended up getting an order of protection against him for other things and when he broke it by coming to my apt again (I had a neighbor watching out for him)I had him arrested. RRRRRRRRRRRRRR.

I would never even consider opening or snooping anything of my children's. It's their business. Kathy if you catch her I hope that you say something to her. Hopefully she will be embarassed enough to stop.

When my MIL had more access to our house (moreso than she does now), I know she would go through our stuff because at a family members shower she just had to mention 'Well, I never KNEW you had so many sets of dishes and glassware'. I keep them in the CLOSED section of my china cabinet. And who the heck is she to have the 'in' on what I own? - like I had to give her a d a m n inventory list of my home!! I have a room dedicated to all of the antiques I inherited from my grandmother and I keep it locked - only I have the key (not even husband). When he moved out the last time, his family never found a second to help US throughout the house misery but they couldn't wait to get over there and rip through every inch of my house to 'help' collect his things as he was moving out!! They even tried to tamper with the lock on the door to 'my' room, knowing full well there was NOTHING of his in there. B a s t a r d s!!!

no, thank god. I'd want to kill her! LOL

For me, my worry is her big mouth You can't trust her with anything too important or confidential. You learn that once the hard way and you don't forget it!

What you said you heard I smack my MIL

Just jokes. I hope she does not. She has been here and I didn't really watch her but now you got me thinking I should be careful. I would totally hate that and feel I have to hide everything too.

Not my MIL but I have caught my SIL on many occassions. I heard her go in our medicine cabinet when something fell out into the sink! She also walks over to my desk when I'm in the kitchen or something and she'll start peeking at my bills, mail, etc. She no longer pet-sits for us- I've seen her look through too many things. If she does this while I'm around, I can only wonder what she'll do when I'm not! Hubby just rolls his eyes and says 'she was probably looking for a band-aid' or 'looking for pictures'. He makes excuses for her- but I've learned to keep an eye on her when she's here.

Kathy, maybe you should leave a piece of folded paper out in the open that says 'Stop snooping through our things'

I cannot even imagine my MIL being that rude. That is just plain rude and there is NO excuse for that behavior. Perhaps pad locks on everything would give her the hint.
