Have you ever caught your MIL going through your things?

Original post by Kathy116

My future MIL is coming to visit next week, and I'm totally on edge...

The last time she was here, I caught her snooping through my car...picking up papers I had that were folded and she just unfolded them and reads them!

Then, she thought I was outside and she played back the OLD messages I had saved on my answering maching.

If I have a piece of mail laying around, she unfolds it and reads it, especially if it's a bill.

I can just imagine what I don't see!

Anyone else experience this? How did you handle it? I spoke with FI, and he laughed like, 'Mom is so bad, she so nosey'.....but that's not good enough for me, I don't want her to do that anymore, but I feel funny saying,' Hey Mom, do you mind not going through my things.'

Thats horrible, Kathy! How sad that you have to live with this lack of trust.

My MIL even gives John his junk mail, and she always falls for them thinking they are 'something important' (editd to add: mail that he still gets at his moms house)

OMG! No, thank God! That is totally unacceptable, and you should totally call her on it! Nicely, of course, and hopefully she'll get the point!

I can't believe she listened to your messages! What the hell is that?

I don't think my in-laws snoop...but I guess I wouldn't necessarily know......hmmmm.

Well, I guess I would do 2 things. I would start to leave less around for her to snoop through, especially sensitive stuff (i.e. credit card bills).

And since there isn't anything to hide, I would let it go. It's not worth it to start something with her over it, nor would I hold it against her. Who cares if she knows what your electric bill is/was and stuff like that. She's probably been 'snooping' on your DH for 20 years and can't help herself

I should say that I/we are always trying to keep the peace within my DH family. It's not usually us involved in the many turmoils, but we definitely get caught in the middle. So I/we try to take the high road and accept each of them the way they are. I hope this helps!

Thank goodness, no, but like Teri, I have to worry about her blabbing.

No,that is terrible. I guess the only way to stop her is to catch her in the act although that may not stop her either.

I know this isn't nice but I would leave something around for her to 'see' that was totally fictitious just to watch her squirm

I started leaving alot of, um, adult toys in random places. Also I left a pregnancy test in the garbage pail when I knew she was coming over. You had to see her face - she was ashen!! He-hee!!!

She has opened mail addressed to DH that still comes to her house and has opened cards which were sent to her for our E party. I caught her peeking at our bank statement once and grabbed it from her. That's the worst of the snooping she's done. She knows I don't like her being in my business. DH lets her know ALL our business.

Mine would never!

This is very disturbing! When I saw the topic it immideatly made me think of the show Everybody Loves raymond! You should watch it, Marie, Ray's mom, is constantly butting in and going through their bills with comments like: '$120 from Victoria Secret? I see!' I am sure you can relate to what Ray's wifen Debrah has to deal with!
