After reading through Mima's thread I got to thinking about how detrimental weight fluctuations and low self esteem/ body image can be to a woman. I'm curious to see how many of us suffer from one or have in the past. You dont have to go into details if you dont want to. Hence, why I made a poll. I just wanted to see the consensus among us here on the board.
To answer, yes I have had some form of one in the past. I dont really know what to catagorize it as though. It wasnt exactly anorexia because I still allowed myself to eat- just eliminated alot of foods and basically all I ate was with apples, steamed vegetables and egg whites and grilled chkn. From time to time (because I was restricting myself) I would binge and go into an all consuming depression for a few days. It was a nightmare, hindered me from living my life and having fun. I still grapple with body image issues and now that I am at my heighest weight ever I'm feeling those demons calling me again. I know I'll never let myself fall completely back into that ED mindset, but that still doesnt stop me from thinking and 'hearing' it from time to time.
Sorry if this was too deep for the AM....

But I wanted to bring up another point. I grew up with my mother constantly dieting and watching what she ate and trying to look good. Yes I love her dearly but I have seen that this has had a bit of a negative impact on myself and on my youngest sister. I think its good to stay and shape and etc but to grow up with your mom constantly dieting when she already looks pretty good is a bit detrimental. Esp to my sister who has a great body but never thinks she looks good. She has a flat flat stomach and still isnt happy. My other sister isnt as obsessed but she works out and tries to maintain a good body image as well. I mean it has its positive effects on us but I dont want to act this obsessive in front of my kids. Hmm what do you think?
I TOTALLY agree!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I know so many people who have a messed up body image bc of their mom always dieting and pushing dieting on them..it can be cery deterimental.
My mom was th eopposite...never really dieted, she was chubby but happy. I always had a great body image (even though I didnt and dont have the best body ) my mom did encourage me to be healthy, she just never pushed being skinny.

I don't have an eating disorder; I just genuinely love food. I don't emotionally eat, in fact when something bad happens I become very nauseous and don't eat.
I just need to learn I can still love food, just in a smaller portion. That's the behavior that I have to modify & learn how to use on a daily basis.
me too Jane! I loveeeeeeeeeeee food! But I also dont eat a lot when Im upset so I know Im not an emotional eater
I'm really a gavone!! I just need to learn to eat smaller portions, and WW is finally teaching me, or I'm finally getting it is more like it!

Re: Have you ever had an eating disorder?
i never have.. but i know someone who is battling one
i went through a phase in like 8th grade when i was obsessed with my body... like i would stare at myself in the mirror ALL THE TIME and point out all the problem areas.... i would get really upset about it, but it never turned into anything more than being depressed

Listen to this circle of life: When my mom was growing up her mother wouldn't allow my mom to step foot into the kitchen b/c she thought my mom was too fat. Which by no means possible was my mom too fat! SOOOOOOOOO when I was little, my mom was the opposite she would feed me till the cows come home b/c she didn't want to do the same to me that her mother did. It's really F'd up the things our parents can instill in us as children. It's just up to us as Adult to break it.

I never had an eating disorder but I am a lunatic with my weight. I just eat right and work out and cheat here and there.
I love eating too much and need 3 meals a day but I agree with you - yes I cheat and love my chocolate but otherwise I am obsessive about working out and watching what I eat. I do whats called 'Jenna for Life' - haha, I eat maybe 17 good meals a week and cheat on the other 5. I do like to work out and have a new love for running, and do it because overall it makes me feel good (and I can afford the cheats here and there.)

good point. as a parent you really want to set a good example and not be crazy or obsessed....
i hope that when DH and i are parents and our kids are older that they learn to control their eating - i think i am going to keep them on a diet from a young age - no soda, healthy snacks, little things like that and i hope we can keep them active.....i want healthy kids, not couch potatos! but that is a health thing NOT a body image thing.....you just have to make sure you keep the two seperate - especially for your kids sake....you dont want to confuse them or set bad examples....whether its overeating or starving....

oh and the thing with parents - when i was growing up i was so thin - my mom would cry b/c she could see my bones (when i was like say 8).....then as a teenager - you're too skinny, you're too skinny......then when i gained weight she basically said, you need to go on a diet .....now i am skinny again - and i hear you're too skinny....the day of the wedding she saw me naked and was like omg nicole you're too thin....and i got pissed....then she was upset that she upset me, she felt so bad she went to DH b/c she was upset over it - i got over it though b/c im so used to her having comments....
but even being called too skinny can make you feel bad it can be negative and make you feel ugly....

Re: Have you ever had an eating disorder?
I hope you don't mind my crashing today but your conversations are so interesting today! If you do mind than just ignore my post lol
I don't think you have to have an eating disorder necessarily but can have disordered eating if that makes sense. Some people dont have anorexia, bulimia, compulsiv overeating etc. but they do have a clear issue with food. This has always been me for most of my life. In college I battled exercise bulimia. I would eat 2 meals a day filled with salads and ff cottage cheese but i would exercise obsessively so that I was burning off what I was eating. I would wake up and go tot he gym. Go to class, go back to the gym. Eat lunch , Go tot he gym, go to class eat dinner and go back to the gym and repeat. it was a terrible way to live.
I remember one time being home on christmas vacationt aking my 4th spinc lass of the day and crying ont he bike because I felt so outof control! My weight has fluctutated from 90 pounds to 125 pounds between freshman year of college and where I am now. I tried weight watchers, and worked with trainers and it isn't untilt hsi year that I found a nutritionist/trainer that i feel content with my body as it is NOW. I do still get obsessed with the scale and i worry about 'when the weight creeps back on' and pregnancy but I also know that I don't want my life to be the way it was. it is such a scary thing and a horrible disease that I really don't think every leaves you. I will never be able to eat 'normally' as I see peopel do. I have accepted that, i just try to do my best to enjoy food and to put healthy and unhealthy things into my body. I try to view food as fuel and not as something to be afraid of.
It definitely is an addiction and unfortunately unlike drug/alcohol addictions (not that I am saying that those are easy by any means) you need food to live so you cant just cut it out.
Woah sorry for the massive post and again sorry for crashing, i just thought this was an interestintg conversation!

i would *try* to burn the calories i over ate for the day.....but i didnt care enough to actually stay on the treadmill long enough to burn 500 calories or more at a time im too lazy people do it though - exercise anorexia - so i thought, oh wow, good idea - b/c i love to eat and there is no way i can really starve myself - but the crazy exercising didnt work for me like i said, im just way too lazy hahahahaha
speaking of which, i NEED to get in the gym i am so lazy lately!
I have a cousin (in-law) like this. She eats but then immediately goes on the treadmill or something. Even when she has her family over for dinner, after she eats she does this. It's so unhealthy. She is so skinny. When she was pregnant with her 4th child, you couldn't even tell she was carrying in her 8th month.

Re: Have you ever had an eating disorder?
I've never considered it an 'eating disorder', but maybe! I mean when I was 15 I all of a sudden put on a LOT of weight. Within that one year I gained somewhere between 50-80 pounds I don't know why. I went on a diet after that and in the following year lost about 90 (but that was a real healthy diet). Years later I maybe put back on about 30 and decided to lose it asap (esp years later when i started having feelings for dh. I was feeling self conscious about my weight - even tho he couldn't care less). So then I just cut back on what I ate a LOT. I was seriously eating the bare minimum and working out pretty intensely and I did lose a lot of weight fast. I remember at my job, people would ask me to list everything i've eaten that day, just to make sure i wasn't anorexic. I WAS eating though, that's why I never considered it a disorder. I still don't think it was- i think it was more of a crazy crash diet. I'd probably do it again for a little bit if I were still single. DH does not allow me to not eat tho, so that's not an option. lol

I used to be 98 pounds in high school and got made fun of all the time. People said I looked like a Samalian (sp?) - and called me anorexic, it was not fun. I couldnt help being skinny, I played 3 sports and ate my face off and still no weight gain. when I went to college, I finally gained weight hooray! But alittle too much.

my friend has been bulimic for the past 12 years - she looks normal though.. i know she has bouts of it.. just eat and throw up..
eta: i found out b/c her roomate randomly suggested that she's always in the bathroom after she eats.. and brushes her teeth right after dinner.. i picked the lock and went to the bathroom while she was in there.. it was a devstating sight.. i know she stopped but then it creeps up once in a while..

I also grew up in a house where my mother was constantly dieting and to no avail. She has struggled for as long as I've been around as well as in her childhood. Its definitely had an impact on me. She's also said some hurtful things to me over the years regarding my weight and appearance. I still haven't been able to find the 'way' to recover from that. I can only say that I know that if I have children, they will never see me engage in that behavior. I need to break this cycle not perpetuate it.

Re: Have you ever had an eating disorder?
I never have. But l think I tend to over eat lately. I have been extremley obsessed. When I met DH I was 97lbs and since have gained 30lbs. I hate it! I feel disgusting all the time but then I stuff my face with junk?? I dont get it? I need to start eating better. Some will say 127lbs is a great weight, and I know it is. but being 5'0 tall it feels like much more to me. I know some of the weight came from my boobs. They grew 2 years after highschool from a 34c to a 34DD..I have know idea where they came from..LOL. Maybe BC?? But I think iam becoming obsessed lately with my body. I think I would be very happy at 115 pounds, I just dont know if I can get there because I am so lazy!!

Re: Have you ever had an eating disorder?
No never. But I can get very obsessed over the gym and eating healthy. I work out constantly..5 days a week and I will feel guilty even if I miss 1 day!!!!! And I feel that even though I'm pretty toned, I become more obsessed over my physique and how well my muscles are defined. I think its definately alittle much sometimes, I do such hard core exercises, some people can't believe it. So in that way I guess I can be categorized as a gym rat or gym obsessed.. But I love food and eat 6 meals a day usually!!!!

Re: Have you ever had an eating disorder?
I have always been heavy. I'm, I guess, what you would call an over eater. I don't binge or emotionally eat, but I just LOVE food.
In HS, I was exercise bulemic. I was fanatic w/ working out and counted every calorie and gram of fat and HAD TO burn it off. It worked b/c I lost about 100 lbs.
I wouldnt eat more than 10 grams of fat a day back then. This was before the low carb craze and little did I know that I would have lost a lot more and a lot quicker if I cut out carbs, but kept some fat. I stopped once I started college and work FT b/c I had no time to work out.
I kinda wish I could get back into being fanatic about working out again and didn't despise working out.
I went to a naturopathic Dr. and they told me that my body doesn't break down carbs to be burned, I just store them. This totally ***** b/c carbs are my biggest weakness If the world was rid of bread and pasta, I'm SURE I'd be a size 2

Re: Have you ever had an eating disorder?
I have never had an eating disorder however, my roommate/best friend from college has battled anorexia for years. I know that she's been in and out of the hospital for it and she's also been in in-patient facilities. When we were in school she was ok. She was still really hard on herself still but there was never an issue where she had to go to the hospital when we were living together. I actually just saw her last weekend for the first time in about 5 years and she finally looks healthy. I know it's something that you never really get over but she's doing well at least.
