Health Insurance Question?

Health Insurance Question?

When you got married...if both your companies had decent insurance did you both switch to one?

Currently my DH and I are on our own companies plans...but I am thinking of switching to his since mine has gone up so much. We will find out his new costs in June.

I am currently on Dh's plan because it is so much cheaper and much better then the one offered at work. If the costs were similar, I would have kept mine and just added each other to the other for more coverage.

So you can be covered by two insurance companies? Is this worth the extra money?

Sometimes it's cheaper to be on your own since you then pay the single rate as opposed to the family rate. Some nsurance companies are getting with the program and offering three different rates: single, family, and an option for husband/wife (or SO) only.

We are both on my insurance at the moment which is pretty cheap every month.

It was cheaper for us to keep our coverage separate. We'll join on one plan after the baby is born.

Re: Health Insurance Question?

You can have health insurance coverage overlap on each of you. Your insurance would be primary for you and vice versa. If you had expenses that exceeded your coverage your hubby's coverage would pick up the rest of reasonable and customary. If you use a lot of out of network docs that would pay and also if you go to the docs frequently or have a chronic condition that requires you to incur some out of pocket expenses. The other choice would be a MSA (medical savings account), which would allow you to put in before tax money to an account and then use it as you need it for the charges that were not covered by your insurance. The only thing with that is that you would have to use the money in the account or forfeit it at the end of the year if you didn't.

To answer your question, we are each on our own policies because it turned out cheaper and since I use prescriptions more my plan was better for me..

I used to be a life/health insurance agent....in my last life.

The costs would really have to be considered but with having a primary and a secondary, it it usually good for Major Medical because it ups your limit. It is an area that most of us neglect but should really look into. If you have a 1 million dollar limit for Major medical, that isn't really that high. That would be the major reason I would keep both.

I am on my DH's policy. I got added as of the day we got our marriage license. They only take out an extra $26 a week from DH's check to have me covered under medical/dental/vision.

My company would have been almost $200 more every 2 week just to add him to medical. don't even know about dental but his dental plan is a whole lot better and I had no vision coverage.
