health insurance vs. raise

I was just offered this choice at work.

Either DH is added to the fully employer paid health insurance (worth $6,000) or I get a raise (~$3,000).

DH is currently uninsured & was recently hospitalized for a kidney stone (which we will have to pay out of pocket for).

Which would you choose?

Re: health insurance vs. raise

100 % health insurance. God forbid he gets really ill and you can quickly be stuck with a 50,000 bill for a few days in the hospital. It's just not worth the risk, imo.

Re: health insurance vs. raise

I would take the health insurance. While the raise is nice and extra money in your pocket, you never know what tomorrow will bring! Taking all of that out of pocket can add up and you could end up in the negitive. Health insurance is a must have for me and it would end up being cheaper in the long run!

GL! And I hope your DH is feeling better!

Re: health insurance vs. raise

definitely health insurance ... it's always good to be prepared in case anything happens (God forbid).

Unless you can find a diff health insurance provider on your own that would be cheaper.

Re: health insurance vs. raise

Insurance for sure! Especially because of the kidney stone. My DH had his first stone 3 years ago and usually had 2-4 stones a year now. You would def. wanna be insured in that case.

I work in the health care field and I always find stories like this so ridiculous! There are so many patients getting free health services and never have to pay (or actually have a job) for their services. Then, we stick other people with 25K bills for their hospital visits. Sorry, I get all worked up over this stuff!

I also work in the health care industry and I also ALWAYS hear stories of disporportionate cost/coverage.

GO HEALTH INS. In all liklihood DH won't even need it...but having it is worth WAY MORE than 3k in terms of peace of mind!

A simple visit to a PCP doc can been hundreds, thousands...with no coverage. Nevermind an actual emergency like an appendectomy.
