HELP ME - How do I become more.........

domesticated
I don't like to cook clean or anything but hug and kiss my hubby.
But I think he's getting hungry
I made him Shrimp Scampi last week, and he was so happy, but I'm too lazy to do this too often.

Last night I made him Salmon, which he loved and he had chocolate donuts for dessert BUT a half hour later he was throwing up. What did I do wrong?

I'm a bad homemaker

Re: HELP ME - How do I become more.........

You need help with cooking? I think the more you practice, the better you become and honestly, I think you have to enjoy cooking or else it will be a chore. Or you have to at least somewhat like it to be creative...we both love to cook and my husband cooks during the week since he is home first. But I like to cook on the weekends if we are home, if I was home first I'd love to be cooking every night (well, almost every night, I am not THAT crazy).

Re: HELP ME - How do I become more.........

Sorry..cant help you b/c I NEVER cook. I am not a good cook and my husband is - so it just makes more sense that he be the one that does it!

I dont think that makes you a bad homemaker. As long as you are doing your share in other areas, being a good cook does not make you a bad wife!

Re: HELP ME - How do I become more.........

Thanks Stef

I felt so awful when he threw up his whole dinner. I wanted to cry b/c I can't properly feed my hubby.
Maybe it was something else and not my food? I feel fine, no upset stomach or anything. Maybe it was the donuts?

Re: HELP ME - How do I become more.........

oh BOY I know this feeling! I am good at cleaning and ironing, organizing, laundry - all that. BUT AN AWFUL COOK! My husband is a great cook which makes it more difficult to impress...

I decided to go little by little. I am starting with breakfast on weekends because it's easier than things like salmon. So I did really great scrambled eggs with Italian toast last weekend. This past Sunday I made blueberry-buttermilk pancakes from scratch. I know it's not much, but each time something comes out good, I gain confidence. I got a very basic cookbook - like Family Circle or something so that I am not overwhelmed. I feel your pain....

Re: HELP ME - How do I become more.........

So far the recipes I've found on allrecipes.com do help a lot. I got a couple of cook books from family when I got married, but I haven't had any interest to read them yet

Re: HELP ME - How do I become more.........

Like i said, i dont think a bad cook = a bad wife. And honestly, I work just as many (nah, more) hours than my husband - why should I be the one who cooks? Because Im a women? no way.

But off my diatribe :D We have this book called 'how to cook anything' and it really does have a recipe for almost anything you can think of. So its good to have on hand when you want to know how to make the basic stuff.

Re: HELP ME - How do I become more.........

Liz, I am coming over to give you lessons j/k I think you should stick to areas that you are strong in and let Len do the things that you are weaker at, that usually balances out things. I don't think not being a good cook makes you a bad wife either, just a bad cook I had to say that. I think that in time it will get better, everything gets better with a little practice. I think it was the donut. If something was wrong with the fish you would have been sick too.

Re: HELP ME - How do I become more.........

I am so sorry Liz

Maybe you should try one recipe from those cookbooks every week. Start off with simple things. Gain confidence and then you can move on to more complicated things.

Does he cook? If so, maybe he can do the cooking, and you do other things.

Re: HELP ME - How do I become more.........

Thanks ladies

I don't think I will EVER cook every night. I figured I'd try for twice during the week, and one on weekends, like Sunday.

Only troulbe is Len doesn't cook either, so what do I do when we have kids?
It's OK for us to grab a pizza now, but if I have children I suppose I can't give that to them.

Shamma, I'll take you up on your offer
Stef, I'm going to find that book. Thanks

Re: HELP ME - How do I become more.........

Liz, you aren't a bad homemaker! It takes time to learn how to cook. And I'm sure that it was nothing you did that made him sick. It could have been a bad piece of salmon, especially because of the blackout. A lot of stores didn't replace their stuff.

When it comes to cooking, you just have to get creative....and not be afraid to try things. Start with the basics, hamburgers, grilled/baked chicken, tomato sauce.....the most simple things that are the easiest to make. The sauce is the best, because you can make a lot of it, freeze some of it, and reheat it when you are ready and it takes just a few minutes to make at night.

Do you have a George Forman grill? That is God's gift to working women who aren't kitchen genius'.

Re: HELP ME - How do I become more.........

children dont eat real 'meals'. I mean - children eat very basic bland foods in their early years. So as long as you can boil water for veggies and rice and things like that - you are good for several years.

Re: HELP ME - How do I become more.........

Liz,
John cooks because he is so much better at it than me, he cooks incredible! Our guests always compliment the cooking & he lets me take credit awww!

Anyway I cook only a few dishes, but have started cooking more, with recipes & cook books and wouldn't you know, John is not only impressed, but he asks for certain things I made over & over! Some dishes he will tell me he didn't like, either because I didnt make them well or he just doesnt like the recipe.

But each time I make something good, I gain so much confiedence to try again & try new things.

Today I am making a cheescake for desert (first time) and I am making corned beef & potatoes for dinner .

You can do it Liz!!!!

Re: HELP ME - How do I become more.........

Yes, stef - I could def do that
I guess I just remember my Mom used to cook these elaborate meals every single day AFTER WORK
How did she do this?
But I guess what my kids don't know they won't miss, huh

Misty, I forgot about the blackout, I had planned on not buying meat for 2 weeks, and then Len went and bought the salmon, I'm not even sure where he got it from

And I do have a Foreman Grill, haven't used in a while, but I better start

Re: HELP ME - How do I become more.........

Liz: I am a great cook, and I don't cook everyday. I am not getting my husband started on that. I cook every 2 or 3 times a weeks, and I do a big sunday dinner. So don't feel obligated to cook everyday because your title is wife.

Re: HELP ME - How do I become more.........

I clean, but not as much as I used to. I feel like I have NO time, and this weekend I thought I would, but I was migraining for the most part. I actually don't mind cleaning as much as cooking tho' and I do a MUCH better job at it then Len does.

Wash, never. Len does laundry, I won't do it until we move into a place that allows a machine. I refuse to go to laundromats, they turn me off.
