help me out with gym stuff

okay i have never been to a gym, like never even been INSIDE a gym.

i have a free pass from my job to go to the gym here. . . i keep making excuses not to go but i really want to go and join up

i am the heaviest i have ever been and it is making me so sad so i want to do something about it!!!

so tell me about the gym. what should i do? what do you think my first day will be like? after i get my little tour what should i do to NOT look like a total dork?

I was thinking of getting a personal trainer for a month bc i do NOT know how to use the machines and i dont want to hurt myself, do u think thats a bad idea?

oh and what makes this all worse is that i have very bad anxiety and i just broke out into hives typing all of this just thinking of something new BUT i get used to new things very quickly once i get over that!!

RELAX! First of all its GREAT you're motivated no matter what the reason! What gym is it?

If you can afford a personal trainer for the first month i would do it just to get you aqquaiinted BUT be very specific about your goals and what you want to accomplish or they may give you bullcrap routines.

Thats what i did because id never stepped foot inside a gym before I signed with the NYSC. That gym gives you a free training session when you join. What I find works best if you get a freebie, is asking around to other women to find out who they have trained with and really like because not all trainers are good.

Do you work on LI or NY? Fm me if you have questions. I have some good routines down from ym own sessions.

OMG good for you, and you will NOT look like a dork!!!

I know when I joined NYSC they offered a $69 'try-pack' which was for 3 private sessions with a trainer, who'll walk you through every piece of equipment and design a routine for you to work based on your needs. I think it's well spent, just so you know what you're doing, and dont end up inadvertently making your butt bigger and your chest smaller, assuming you want the opposite... (that's from a will & grace episode!)...

But take the tour tomorrow and see what you think. At signup they will probably OFFER you some kind of personal trainer package too!!!

thanks for answering!

there is a Bally's one block from me which is great bc i dont even have to get into my car and be tempted to go home before hitting the gym so that is where i am going to try

BUT i am not in the best area so if its gross i am not going to join there and i will look elsewhere, I am in Queens btw. i work in Jamaica but live in Howard Beach

i get a great discount from my job if i sign up for 4 months. . .and that will push me to keep going since i will have to pay anyway

Don't worry about it. I know how it feels to think everyone is looking at you but I know when I am at the gym the only thing I am looking at is the calorie counter and seeing how many I am burning.

When you go for the walk through the first day they will show you how to work the basic machines like treadmills and ellipticals. Tell them you have never been before and they will really go into detail.

With the other machines if I am not sure how to work them I either read the description on the machine or I watch what the buff people do when they use it. If both of those fail you ask someone that works there. That is their job and from what i have seen they love showing slow people like me how to work a machine.

If you are anxious can you go with someone from work that also has a pass. It may make your first day easier. Or go during a slow time. On Sundays at the gym it is me and the old people.

Last thing. when I first started going to the gym I bought new work out clothes. Even though they were just sweat pants I get excited about wearing my new outfit.

that's great that you want to go!! it's so intimidating the first time you go. i still feel like a dork when i go, and i've been going to the same gym for a while now.

most gyms will offer one free personal training session. if not, at minimum, they should have an orientation session, where someone will show you around and how to use the machines. the weight machines look intimidating at first, but once you're used to them, they're actually pretty fun. also, many of the machines will have directions on them on how to use them properly, but if you can have a trainer work with you and show you, that's optimal.

good luck w/ the gym!!!! i know since the wedding i've gone all of 2x!! it's so sad, and my marriage pounds are packing on

Anytime!

Hmm I belonged to Bally in the Bronx and didnt like it. I mean it was fine but I found it only a few steps above my highschool weightroom. But some are nicer. Depends the one closest to you.

The machines vary also from gym to gym but if you can figure out the ones you want to use (ask someone; a trainer or even another in shape person. men LOVE to help give instructions and they usually are spot on) I can give you my old routines from trainers that use those that worked for me.

Ballys also has urban rebounding classes which I LOVED!!!!! SOOOO much fun. Hard on me cause I have flat feet but they really burn calories and you have a ball.

Are you looking to join ballys? I am selling my lifetime membership if you're interested.

I only pay 14 per month..

Thing is about PTs... is that they really know how to teach you resistance training which is EXTREMELY benefitial to weight loss/ toning up.

Most of us can do a normal workout routine but what happens is you plateau and really stop at what you feel comfortable with... I always find when I work with a PT, I push myself a little harder and I get a workout that's 100% better than me just working out on my own.

I say, if you can afford it, get the personal trainer for a couple of months and retain what they teach you

Thats actually somethiing health magazines and magazones actually recommend Cat! They say if you wear a nicer gym outfit MEANT for the gym, you're more likely to want to go to wear it (for women.) An article I read also suggested going for closer fitting clothes-not oversized sweats and tees. At first its uncomfortable because you're revealing it all, BUT when you start to drop the weight and firm up, a pair of stretchy black pants REALLY shows that off and you get excited and want to work harder.

I have my Happy Bunny Tees and stretch pants that I wear when i start out (I go through stages lol-vicious cycle) and when Im more buff and confident I switch to teeny shorts and a sprts bra top.
