Here's a mind cruncher for Friday

Original post by PeteysBride

How do you feel about home defense?

I bring this up because my husband has a firearms lisence and recently has been dragging me out to the range with him because he wants me to learn to shoot. He'd taken me out years ago but he's mroe into it because there have been a series of break-ins in our area and he is afraid of the few nights when he can't get back in time to be there in the evening.

Now I never had a problem with him owning a gun. I know that the majority of violent crimes are NOT committed by people with legal firearms, but ratehr those who gobtain guns through illegal means, which is why some of these gun control laws make no sense. I know that if respected, a gun can be safe.

HOWEVER..... I never really equated a gun with myself or with ever even CONSIDERING I need know how to use it... So this whole learning how to fire it and take care of it bugs me out a little. DH says 'If it comes down to you or the bad guy, I want to see your face at the end of the day not his.'

I understand that logic but I'm still unsure whether if it came down to it, I would be able to make that choice of them or me.I like to think my sense of self preservation would kick in, but I know if it did, my concience would join in soon after. However then I think, 'if I had kids, I would most certainly make sure the bad guy would not hurt them, no matter what it took.' Its a mind twister.

What does everyone else think? Do you think (we're being hypothetical here because I know its impossible to tell what you would do unelss faced with the situation) that you would be able to defend yourself and your family at all costs if it came down to you or the person trying to hurt you/them?

we should all get Tasers.. i love watching the police use them on COPS.. its hilarious..

I am with you on the bat idea. Knives, NOPE. Not for me. Seen too many movies where a big bad guy can overpower my 120pound behind and stab me with my own knife which is just an indignity.

Basball bat at least has reach

I agree only law enforcement professionals should have guns...in a perfect world. But until we get all the guns out of the hands of the bad guys or make sure there is a cop in every house 24/7, I feel more comfortable with the firearm. But its an individual choice.

Okay so, DH owns a business and he is going o get his gun license to protect it soon. He wanted to get one earlier and also have a gun in our apartment BUT since we live in my parents' home that was out of the question. They would NOT allow that.

Anyway, when we have our own home we will have a gun and we will both get our licenses for it.

Now, I do NOT think that I would be able to shoot someone BUT if I get comfortable with it then I would be able to defend my family. DH does not get home until midnight sometimes so once we get a house I wil be alone until then - I need SOMETHING to make me feel comfortable doing that.

ITA!

Its ironic because I do believe in capital punishment. HOWEVER if I have to be the one administering it, the line starts to get thicker for me. I think I could protect my family lol but I guess I dont love me as much as I should because if it were just me I think i'd hesitate and try to 'reason' with the bad guy and end up another statistic.

Great reply Jenn... and just so i'm being clear, I don't equate a self-defense killing with institutionalized murder (capital punishment)...

Deanna here's a question for you a little off topic and only because your DH is a cop. Does he know of any self defense classes that are offered maybe through some part of the NYPD that are lower cost?

Court and I were looking into it but the ones we found are private and SOOO expensive which is kinda rdiciulous considering how many violent crimes are committed against women. Its sorta a neccisity these days.

Baseball bat works good too. Forgot about that.
I used to sleep with one under my bed, after some nut job who lived behind me tried to break into my bedroom window one night..
He was too drunk to succeed, but scared the cr@p out of me.
Slept with the bat IN my bed for a couple of weeks after that.

I used to keep a mini-bat under my drivers seat in the car. Wonder what I did with that ........

A good crack across the knees or back would bring anyone down.

That would be great! I think all women really should know at least the basics, but these clases start at like $400 bucks! CRAZY. I was going to contact the mayor (I love to harrass my legislators when I am PMSing ) about it because I have actually gotten respobnses before bout other things but figured I'd start 'closer to home' first.

Yes I do. I HATE that area...when I started working at my current job and going through the terminal it was warm so the weirdos were outdoors but now they're all inside because ist cold. a lot of vagrants around and the cops don't do much. HATE Going through there. Fortunately my terminal is a pretty straightforward walk.

Yea its nuts. I think its because its catching on and some of best ones do need trained specialists so they earn more I guess. But I think especially in a city where so many women are victims of rape and assualt (HELLO Central Park!) it really should be offered as a service to the community.

I wanted to take the kind where they really rip you apart verbally as they 'attack' you. The idea behind it is many women freeze when we're spoken to harshly. Thats how so many offenders get women to go with them. They make them cower. In some of these classes they break the women down into tears the first few sessions because they're so obscene, but the point is to desensitize you to that kind of scenario so you bypass it and go straight into defensive mode to protect yourself.
