Here's a mind cruncher for Friday

Original post by PeteysBride

How do you feel about home defense?

I bring this up because my husband has a firearms lisence and recently has been dragging me out to the range with him because he wants me to learn to shoot. He'd taken me out years ago but he's mroe into it because there have been a series of break-ins in our area and he is afraid of the few nights when he can't get back in time to be there in the evening.

Now I never had a problem with him owning a gun. I know that the majority of violent crimes are NOT committed by people with legal firearms, but ratehr those who gobtain guns through illegal means, which is why some of these gun control laws make no sense. I know that if respected, a gun can be safe.

HOWEVER..... I never really equated a gun with myself or with ever even CONSIDERING I need know how to use it... So this whole learning how to fire it and take care of it bugs me out a little. DH says 'If it comes down to you or the bad guy, I want to see your face at the end of the day not his.'

I understand that logic but I'm still unsure whether if it came down to it, I would be able to make that choice of them or me.I like to think my sense of self preservation would kick in, but I know if it did, my concience would join in soon after. However then I think, 'if I had kids, I would most certainly make sure the bad guy would not hurt them, no matter what it took.' Its a mind twister.

What does everyone else think? Do you think (we're being hypothetical here because I know its impossible to tell what you would do unelss faced with the situation) that you would be able to defend yourself and your family at all costs if it came down to you or the person trying to hurt you/them?

wow.. $400 is crazy!
i dont blame you for harrassing people about this.. its important for women and with this crazy world we live in, we need to defend ourselves, ,,,dammit!

i will do my best to get information!

Yea its nuts. I think its because its catching on and some of best ones do need trained specialists so they earn more I guess. But I think especially in a city where so many women are victims of rape and assualt (HELLO Central Park!) it really should be offered as a service to the community.

I wanted to take the kind where they really rip you apart verbally as they 'attack' you. The idea behind it is many women freeze when we're spoken to harshly. Thats how so many offenders get women to go with them. They make them cower. In some of these classes they break the women down into tears the first few sessions because they're so obscene, but the point is to desensitize you to that kind of scenario so you bypass it and go straight into defensive mode to protect yourself.

wow.. thats crazy! i had no idea the classes are like that at first.. i guess it makes total sense though.. man i would be in tears the first 5 min.. im sooooooooo sensitive.. its terrible!

yea i thought so! thats where DH works.. they are sooooooo shorthanded there now.. he is always working overtime.. take a good look at him in my pics , he works in the mornings,, he will protect you!!

i was there a couple times and its NASTY! they have people living there and have to keep kicking them out.. !!

Hah I will soo be on the lookout for him now. Wave to him in the mornings -snickers- He'll b like 'yea um hi?'

Yes thats the main issue. Alot of homeless peopel in the port. Same ones pretty much everyday. Most don't bother anyone but this one guy scares me. He likes to flip out at random and one day almost hit me in the face because he was walkign past me and just started wigging, throwing his hands out in the air and to the side shouting profanities.

I wish I could take the train but the only thing close to me out in bumbledunk Parsippany is the bus.

Not all of them are but its a specificic kind. Crap I forget the name. I'll see if I can find where I stored the info.

LOL I'd be crying too but its for a good cause. they walk you through the steps. But I'd rather be made to cry in a safe environment and learn to fight back then to ever be caught off guard.

I know personally when people on the street yell (crazy peopel) like 'Yo B*tch' it really startles me and I freeze for like 30 seconds and that half a minute id all someone needs to overpower you. SCARY!
