Re: Hey Losers
here it is....
The person that is my best friend and someone who did something for me that meant the WORLD to me is my DH, Tommy. Of course it is totally natural for every newlywed to say that their DH is the best – as I’m sure they are! But Tommy has changed my life way before we got married in ways that I can never repay him for doing so.
A little background of our relationship (as short & sweet as I can make it): Our fathers grew up next door to each other so our parents have been friends FOREVER – literally! Not only did they grow up next door to each other, but they joined the military together, went on first dates with our mothers together (and they all went to the prom together also) AND were in each other’s wedding party. So needless to say, our families have a HUGE history together.
Growing up, our families always spent different celebrations together (birthdays, graduations, holidays etc) and the running joke since Tommy & I were little was that we were going to get married…this has ALWAYS been the huge joke among everyone in both our families.
Now a little background on my mother – she was EXTREMLY overprotective. Words cannot even describe the crazy level of overprotective she was! (my parents divorced when I was 17 so my mom was the only parent in the household thereafter). Just to give you an idea – I had to be home at 12pm after my senior prom AND I had a curfew of 1am for my 21st birthday – FOR MY 21ST BIRTHDAY!?!? Have you ever heard of such a crazy thing?! And I had to FIGHT her for a 1am curfew!!!!! In fact, I had a curfew until I was about 22 – no joke. As a 20 something year old girl on Long Island who had to go home before all her friends from the bar, who wasn’t allowed to go away anywhere off Long Island with their friends…being able to do these very normal activities would have meant the world to me.
Tommy & I started dating in January 2004. He is 3 ½ years older than I so right away I thought “Yeah right, once he gets wind of my curfew he is out of here”. But to my surprise, he respected the curfew and all the other regulations my mother had on me. From day one, he always said that he was going to “break” my mother down of her overprotective-ness, that he was going to take me out of the country and show me the beautifulness of other places I’ve never been (which was another dream of mine) – all of this would have been the greatest thing ever, but had my doubts.
Within the first 2 years of our relationship – he had done it. He had broken my mother down into releasing me of my long standing curfew. I went away for the first time without my mother (or another adult) with Tommy. He took my on a cruise for our 2 year anniversary & I experienced life outside of the US. I was finally living the Long Island life that I always dreamed of… no curfew, free to do whatever I please. It was like I had finally been unlocked from the chains of what I had known for the first 20 something years of my life.
To someone else (who led a normal life of growing older and maturing) this probably sounds like no big deal; but to me, it meant the world. This was the first (and most important) aspect that makes him my best friend and the most significant person who has made the biggest impact on my life.
