Holiday In Law Problems Anyone?

I just got off the phone with my very pregnant SIL and I made her cry. Not intentionally we are just having problems with coordinating Christmas. DH's parents deciced that they wanted to come into NYC for Christmas and just bought tickets. DH found out yesterday that they were coming in, while his sister has been in the know for a few days now. DH is feeling like a second class citizen in his own family and very pissed off, instead of feeling like isn't that wonderful my parents are coming to visit. A lot of this is a result of we were 'invited' to see his parents on the 24th. No lets talk and figure out how we can make this work.

So I called SIL to try and figure out the holidays and I said that I wished that we had known about this sooner so we could do some planning--DH has to work on the 24th, and first she told me that I should talk to her parents about not talking to us and secondly that I was making her feel like sh*t. So I apologized and she told me she couldn't talk to me right now and hung up.

I called her back--got her voicemail, left a message where I said that I was sorry, didn't mean to make her feel bad and that we should talk and work this out so that the family can spend a portion of the holidays together and that this will all work out. I really hate it right now in that not only do I have to mediate my own family but now I have to with DH's. Before she hung up on me I was intending to try and begin a conversation on how now that we are both in the same state that we need to communicate more about the holidays. I have no idea when we'll be having this conversation.

Geez..and to make matters even more complicated, we are going to spend Christmas Day with my family. I know that that won't go over well with his family...

Any input? Suggestions?

Re: Holiday In Law Problems Anyone?

Maybe it's just me, but I'm not sure why your SIL is upset in the first place. Anyway, as far as she goes, you mad the effort to call back and apologize (even though I'm not sure what you did wrong) so the ball is in her court now. One thing she was right about was that you should call your in laws and see what they have in mind for the holidays. Let them know that DH is working th 24th so they may want to make other plans. As for Christmas, what if you invite his parents to your family's house? It will be a really nice way to get both families a little closer.
