Homeowner Question

Original post by Mary

How did you and DH decide where you want to live? What things did you consider when choosing what town to live in? What was the most important thing?

Re: Homeowner Question

Mary, honestly don't get yourself too hung up on an exact town. IMO, you need to set your priorities on a general area, research the school districts and property taxes and then work within your price range.

We didn't limit ourselves to a specific town b/c our needs were very different. Hubby planned to set up a home office (with the blessing of his employer), so a commute was not an issue; and I am a SAHM for the time being. Since we were moving back to NY from CA, the important thing was just physically being on Long Island. We started eliminating areas based on how I felt about them growing up (since my DH is not from LI). I knew I wanted to be within 30-40 min of my family, but I did not want to live in the town I grew up in. This sounds silly, but I thought it would make me feel like I'd never really 'gotten' anywhere in my life. I can't explain it, but maybe moving across the country for 3 years did that to me. But I digress.

We looked all over really. We would drive out to a town to see some open houses, and then try to get a feel of the town itself, to try and picture ourselves there. We mostly explored central and eastern Nassau - north and south shores. We saw a lot of homes in Bellmore/Merrick/Seaford/Wantagh and Bethpage/Massapequa/Mass Park. We eventually ventured into eastern and western Suffolk - again, north and south shore. We ended up seeing a lot of homes in the Sayville/Oakdale/Bohemia area and the Huntington/Northport/East Northport areas in Suffolk. For a few weeks, we even focused as far east as Manorville. Looking back, I am SO GLAD we did not move that far east.

The moral of my story is that we ended up buying in a great town, but one that we never spent much time in until we found THE house. We live on the Saint James/Smithtown border and we only looked at 4 houses in this area. Hard to believe even now, considering all the searching we did.
Good luck!! You'll have a better idea of towns as soon as you look around more and more.

Re: Homeowner Question

Claud, I know exactly what you mean about not wanting to live in the town I grew up in. It's a great town with a top rated school district but I didn't consider it because I thought I would have felt like I never grew up. You're not the only one!

Re: Homeowner Question

At first we were all over the place from Suffolk to NJ, Upstate... Basically we looked for:

*Nice, decent neighborhood.
*decent size property, w/privacy & wooded
*in the same commuting time that we currently had (about an hour and a half)
*older home with character (no cookie cutters)
*school district (not most imp on our list but we did end up in a sort after district)

Mary - home buying is very very over-whelming and I know exactly where you are coming from about trying to narrow down a town. I went thru a similar experience. I didn't think I would ever find the right one. Don't let yourself stress over it, if you can. Have fun and drive around towns and see what you like and don't like - eventually you will find the one that makes you feel comfortable. hey - if you are lucky - you may even find more than one you love and broaden your search! It will happen! Good Luck to you!

Re: Homeowner Question

We wanted our home to be:
-on the North Shore
-at least 1/2 acre or more
-reasonable commute to the city/airports
-in a top rated school district
-in a town that had a 'community' feel about it (hence we mainly looked in Northport, Centerport, Huntington, Greenlawn, Oyster Bay/East Norwich.)
-in an established & quiet neighborhood

Our house isn't what we had in mind, but that can be changed down the road. We bought our home for the land & location.

Re: Homeowner Question

Claud, your story reminded me of mine We also looked aLL OVER, neither of us having grown up on LI (both from Queens) we thought that Roosevelt field was 'way out there' LOL. and now its a 'trek' too far west for me !
Anyway, we also looked at tons of areas, north and south shores, east and west. We finally really liked East Northport and Huntington and nearby areas. Then I saw a listing for Smithtown and since it wasnt a familiar town, john asks me 'smithtown? why smithtown?' and I said 'we have nothing to lose, lets just look' and winds up that the house we WENT to look at was SOLD and as we turned the block to make a U-turn, we saw 'our home' with a FOR SALE sign on it, and we made our RE STOP his car and let us see the house. We stood outside for like half hour till the homeowners came home and thats my story!
Strange how some things were meant to be !

Claud, I also LOVE living kinda 'far' from where I grew up. and I know what you mean about 'getting out' and starting your own family in a new neighborhood...

Re: Homeowner Question

this is a GREAT thread. I am in the process of narrowing the many choices down as well. When I figure out what I want and how I got there, I'll post it!!

Re: Homeowner Question

I knew I wanted to be close to my family and friends. I knew I didn't want to buy in the same neighborhood I grew up in because a) 90% of my family/friends no longer live there either and b) a friend (sorta) knew a girl we went to high school with was getting a divorce because her car was at her parents house for over 2 weeks straight- i didn't want to live where every single person i grew up with would know my every move.

My situation is a bit different because we weren't really looking just yet. We were fine in the condo but my parents had a friend selling a home (he buys them, fixes them, sells them as a business) and he asked if we wanted to see it. It was in a good school district, nice neighborhood and we loved the house. plus the price was in our range.
