House shopping

Original post by ddunne23

So DH and I made the decision to stay in Dallas a little longer since the job market is not so good right now and we are going to buy a house. For what we pay in rent we could have a mortgage and start building some equity. We are looking at this house this weekend and cannot wait!! I love it from the outside and it has so many ammenities (jet tub! heavenly!!). Just wanted to share the excitement!

Very lovely and I wish we could get something that beautiful for that price here in LI! You saw my house and I paid, let's just say, twice that!

Rob is on a kick - he wants to move to North Carolina because of the gorgeous houses there and his company moving most of their people there too. For the same price as our house in LI, we would live so nicely!!! I just don't think I could do it!

Good Luck to you - it's so exciting!

Wow
Enjoy your shopping spree. Every time I hear of this sort of pricing difference I say what are we doing here.

And tell us the taxes are like 1,000. Or do you even have property tax in TX?

Re: House shopping

The taxes in the area we are looking are between $3000-$4000, but there is not state tax here in Texas...so that is one less thing taken out of our paychecks. And I would think salaries may be a little more in NY, but definately not to the point where cost of living is so different.

So have I convinced anyone to come move to Texas??? I'm tired of not be able to go to the GTG? I think we need a Texas group!!

Re: House shopping

you got me thinking:)

It is ridiculously expensive to live here! We are going to SC this month and are seriously looking around to see if it's a place we would want to live.

Re: House shopping

It really is way out of control. When you consider that the salaries and quite comprable, it makes me think about why we want to move back there someday. I think I may just have to start convincing my family to move here!

d ... that's amazing! I almost coughed up a lung when I read the price!! We're looking at more than 2x that & some of them are dumps!!! Stay put, girl!! I'd move to Texas in a heartbeat!!

Re: House shopping

You better get working on them then

It's not even necessarily a nicer way of life here. It's overcrowded, rushed. Its a shame that kindness from a stranger is shocking and we are all geared up to 'stand our ground' b/c you have to fight for even a space to walk on the sidewalk sometimes. I'm not saying NY doesn't have lots to offer - we just dont know if the cost is worth it anymore?

Re: House shopping

Christine...so true about the kindness from a stanger thing! When I moved down here I would be in the grocery store and the check-out person would be so pleasant and chatty and nice and my initial instinct was 'what is her deal...what does she want...stop talking and just scan my bananas!'. I'm used to it now, but in the beginning it was quite a different way of life!

LOL - scan my bananas:)

My uncle retired to Florida and was working p/t as a toll collector. He said people wouldnt pull away until they did the little script they all seem to have.

Hi, how's your day? (my uncle)

Just fine thank you, yours? (Driver)

Great thanks. Drive carefully. (Uncle)

Will do. Bye:0 (Drive)

HAHAHAHA!!!

Re: House shopping

Yeah..you definately have to get past the NY mentality that somebody needs something or must want something if they start talking to you. So Texas isn't really that bad...if I hadn't moved here..I wouldn't be on this board..becuase I would have never met my husband! So it all happens for a reason!

Re: House shopping

I might be considering a move to Texas myself after the dust settles. My sister lives with her family in Arlington (a suburb of Dallas). She bought her BRAND NEW home with four bedrooms, two and a half baths, 2 car garage, a library and a movie screening room?!? for $125,000 about two years ago. And she makes maybe a few bucks less than me. So tell me again why I can't stand NY? The only disadvantage I really have to consider is that there is NO beaches, some ponds/lakes but it's not the same at all and I'm a major water baby. The air has no moisture down there and everytime I go I find it hard to breathe! Like a fish out of water. But you are right, it is awesome down there. Everyone is so nice and southernly polite. Everything is new and CLEAN. The restaurants and grocery stores are exceptional. And there is no state tax - yee-hah! Maybe we'll be neighbors!

Come on down! Yes, i'd have to agree about being land-locked down here. It drives me nuts in the summer not having the beach nearby..lakes just don't cut it for me.
