Especially if you don't network with other people all that much.

Re: How do corp. recruiters get your info?
sometimes coworkers might give your name and # out... i know sometimes someone might call me for a job and if i know someone who is better suited i give them their info. but i would always let that person know i did this.
i heard sometimes though, the hard core ones have various methods of finding peoples info, by cold calling the company and getting info off the receptionist (ie who is in this position, who handles this, etc).

I think this too much of an effort, no? I work for such specialized unit of the company, that to go through all this trouble seems quite unnecessary. Plus, my group's position within the company is somewhat counterintuitive

That is exactly what they do.
In addition they use profossional org. directories, network with your peer assiciates etc.
Too much trouble you ask? Thats how they earn a living!

I get calls all the time from recruiters. If they have no luck with me they try to get info about who does what.
Recruiters will pay THOUSANDS for a corporate directory so they can get your name that way too.

but I thought they did this for 'big' wigs, no? I am far from that, and its my first experience with one.... And not a happy one too.

No, they will steal/I mean obtain a directory and call right down the list. I know when I worked at E&Y out of college I was in a low end admin/audit role and I would get many calls a week from agencies for accounting and financial positions...the directory did not list titles. Now, they just call our receptionist and ask for IT Manager and I get a bunch. These guys get paid a commission and will do what they can to find people to fill spots. Some are good but some are so evil so you have to find one you trust.

I am not even looking. I don't want to go anywhere just yet, which is exactly what I told him. So far I am happy where I am

As far as I can tell, headhunters dont tend to work too hard for a position under $100K/year..but anything over that they will hunt down like a dog But definitely not limited to just big wigs.

They also troll websites like monster and hotjobs if you have resume and salary requirements posted to the viewing public. I have gotten calls from headhunters that way. I do not earn six figures but I do earn more than 50. It all depends really.
ETA: I am sure they also rent mailing lists if you are involved in any btob type things or belong to any prof. associations.
