just wondering how you guys go about comming up with where you go on vacation. dh and I seem to go through this all the time; researching tons of spots on the internet: tripadvisor, cheap carribean, vacation rentals etc....and it takes us forever to come up with something.

We usually just rent a cabin in the mountains. It is so relaxing and our idea of a vacation is complete privacy and solitude.

We try to pick places that are in are budget, and also places we want to see before we have kids. We were going to go to Cape Cod this summer but decided that can be a family vacation one day, so instead we picked Quebec City.

thats a great idea; but how do you actually pick where to stay etc....we seem to be pulling our hair out over details even when we finally decide the city!

probably the same ways you mentioned!
for where to stay... of course I look on here! then i read reviews on tripadvisor.com and expedia hotel reviews.
for things to do... virtualtourist.com (also has a LOT of other good info) you can find so much information there... from day trips, to tourist traps, etc.

I've always had destinations that I wanted to visit with DH...we're just marking them off as we go :)

We seem to get stuck in ruts, mostly because we can hardly ever go away for more than a weekend at a time.
Most of our vacations seem to be to Rhode Island, the Poconos or to Atlantic City.

this is pretty much what we do too. For example, for our HM, I would have loved St. Lucia or Hawaii, but it wasnt within our budget. So, i did some research to what WAS within our budget -- and thats how we decided on a cruise.
When DH returns from his first deployment he promised me a vacation to wherever we can afford. I know before we have kids I want to see the Mediteranean, St. Lucia, and do Disney again. So this time I'll be choosing whats most afforable of those choices.

We always seem to know where we want go only because we both have an internal list of places we would like to visit...if that makes sense.
A major deciding factor is whether weve been there before or not, the weather, the cost, the kind of actitvities we want to do on vacation for example sight seeing and adventure, or lazy days spent on the beach.

We both have had a running list of places we would like to visit. Usually I take charge and look stuff up or call the TA.

its funny we have tried a few places but no matter where we go - we always say that Key West was better so thats why our next vacation will be there!

funny one of the 'spots' in the running we're considering is Islamorada. Any thoughts? Its not that far from Key West.

We look at how many vacation days we have, then if we see a special, I just book it. Every other year we like to go to Europe, on one of the exhausting trips.
And yearly, we like to relax in the Caribbean
But it's really up to me to find the specials and to book everything.

oh i love the whole 'vibe' of the Keys. . . . there is a GREAT restaurant in Islamorada that is right on the water called 'The Fish Company' its behind this huge sportsman store that DH goes into to buy fishing stuff. . . and its also about 20-30 minutes away from 'Bahia Honda State Park' which is our favorite place to go. It is seriously $2 or something to get in and its a beautiful park and beach area.
When we go to the Keys we don't stay in hotels, we look up homes that people rent out when they are not using them. . .maybe look into that?

We usually look at the places that we both want to visit and then set a budget and then go on expedia, travelocity, trip advisor, etc and see if it is within our set budget. We also have access to a timeshare (my MOH's father and stepmother) that we used for our honeymoon and they let us use it since they don't travel anymore and so we see what they have available and that also influences our decision. That's how we are going to Aruba again in June...can't wait!

i check trip advisor and see what are popular locations.
also---believe it or not--i find just emailing our TA and saying 'i have xxx amount of money to spent---give me some ideas' and a lot of times they can help you with destinations.
also i check TA websites like liberty travel and see what kind of specials they are running for locales
