As far as things like buying a house or having children go (if you want either of those things), do you have it planned out? Do you know how many years you will wait to do these things? Or are you just taking life as it comes along? DH is a big planner. He keeps saying we will look for houses in like 4 years (we bought a condo in September). It is harder for me to plan that far ahead. Although I know people who plan everything and it works out great!

Re: How many Newlyweds have a plan?
DH and I are both obsessive planners (DH is much worse than me if that is possible!) so yes we pretty much have our future lives planned. It is more like goals that we have and the time frame we would like to achieve them in. But life is very unpredictable so our plan can change and it is flexible enough that it can change with bumps in the road along the way. So far we have the house in the time frame we wanted and all the home improvement project are moving according to plan. But since most of the things in our plans are new life experiences - we have found we have to learn to be very flexible and go with the flow...it is hard esp when we both are excessive planners but we are learning!

Re: How many Newlyweds have a plan?
this is a hard topic for us lately.....we are definitely planning to buy a townhouse or (if we are lucky) a house in the next year or 2....but at the same time, we are debating waiting to deliberately TTC after a while or...let nature takes it's course. I feel like lately I have read about so many couples who waited and waited to TTC but then had a lot of trouble.
You can plan as much as you want but sometimes life gets in the way!

Re: How many Newlyweds have a plan?
I have been basically living my life by a 'plan', but I realize things don't always work out the way you want them too. So far, I can't complain since I wanted to finish my education first ( which took a very long time), and received my degree several years ago. Next I wanted to get married, which I did 3 years later. Saved for a home which we bought last summer. Then we wanted kids right away since we weren't getting any younger, and we are expecting in August. I will probably have a second child soon after, but lets see what happens the first time around. I'd eventually like to move down south so we can be near our families.

this is a hard topic for us as well too, we are planning and actually now we are living with my mom and sister but we have our own apartment here , in about 2 years our plan is to buy a house and then have kids right after that, I don't know if it is just me but I am dead set against having my house before we have a baby.

Re: How many Newlyweds have a plan?
We have ideas. We want to stay in the city so we think 2 years and we'll look for an apartment (a two bedroom so that if we decide to adopt within a few years after we'll be ready). We plan to adopt at least one child, possibly 2, and have one (maybe).
Of course, we recognize life gets in the way. We'll buy when the market is right, not just when we're ready, and adoption can be a lengthy and difficult process.
We have other things we're planning now (paying for grad school, going abroad for 6 months volunteering next year), so we're busy with that stuff.
We do plan, but we've lived together for 3 years, so these plans came with time. They came after we'd been together and had figured out our spending habits and projected income, etc.

Re: How many Newlyweds have a plan?
We're trying to have a plan. Right now, the plan is that David is going back to school and he'll hopefully be done in a year. We are also trying to save for a house so we'll hopefully be able to afford one in about 4-6 years. We're still on the fence about the children though, so that will have to wait for now.

Re: How many Newlyweds have a plan?
House after I graduate from Grad school (or maybe the last year, if we can afford it then)...kid after school as well. probably right after I graduate, b/c i am already 30, & I have 3 - 4 years left before I get my grad degree...... ETA: the KID was intentional, not a typo... only one id. I told him if he wants more he'd better have some really determined swimmers & give me twins

Re: How many Newlyweds have a plan?
we got married in November, got our house a month before the wedding (VERY STRESSFUL - don't recommend it - haha) and now its time to be HAPPILY MARRIED!! We have several trips planned and major home remodeling planned for the next year - year and a half.
as for children - we have talked about this several times and have agreed upon waiting a SOLID 2 years.
we're too focused on us right now :)

Re: How many Newlyweds have a plan?
We don't have an exact plan that's laid out for the next 10 years. My mother keeps asking us about our plan(s) as the topic is really annoying, prying into our personal lives like a broken record player. We just give her the basics without any specifics. We enjoy our DINK years and hope to remain so for a long time as we're struggling with our finances and bills without children.
Right now our plans are more like goals/acheivements rather than a plan which there are no due dates but we hope to acheive them before we die. * Both get new jobs * Purchase wall-to-wall carpeting to comply with our co-op's 80% carpeting rule as per by-laws. Live in our co-op apt. for a max of 5 years * Save money and pay almost all debits * Purchase a single-family house within the next 5 years.
