I generally don't. Al will call them once a week or so, to say hi and catch up on things, but unless they call (which is rare) and I answer the phone, I don't talk to them much.
If there's a particular reason, I'll call. But not just for nothing. My mother seems to think I should - 'it'd be nice if you called your MIL, once in awhile - just to say Hi'
I don't know. They don't seem that comfortable on the phone and they have really heavy accents and not great english.
Should I be doing this?

Re: how many of you
I never call. Hubby's mom call all the time, she will ask him how I am doing. She very rarely ask to speak to me, does not bother me in the least. Now if his dad is on the phone, I always ask to speak to him. I love his dad.

I call if I have something to tell them.My MIL always asks for me if she is talking to my husband to make sure she says hi to both of us.

I don't call but I e-mail his mom twice a week or so. He calls on weekends and if I have to talk to them about anything, I get on the phone.

Not at all! Gary talks to his parents sometimes once a week but I NEVER call them.
How bad is this? If I see their name on our caller ID, I hand him the phone and say it's your parents....ooo, now that I write that, it seems bad but hey Gary doesn't say anything about it..............

Re: how many of you
they do always ask about me and have Al say 'hi' to me when he's talking to them. I just wonder if I should be doing more to establish the relationship. The phone is all we have since we're across the country from one another.
Al doesn't really call my parents, but I don't think thats strange.

I am always on the phone with my mother in law. She's great, we have such a great relationship.

If a relationship is meant to be, I don't think it has to be forced, it should be natural. IMO

Re: how many of you
I always speak to my in-laws when they call, regardless of if I pick up the phone or not. My DH works with his step-father and we see them for dinner like every other week.

Re: how many of you
we have a great rapport in person, but when I don't see them for months, I wonder if I should be calling...
I don't just want to be Al's wife, I want to be part of the family.

Re: how many of you
One of my SIL's and I e-mail each other every once in a while, other than that Scott makes all the calls. BUT Scott never picks up the phone to call my family either.

Re: how many of you
Since you are across the country Lisa and you don't want to be just Al's wife, maybe you should call them more often...just a suggestion...

Re: how many of you
Lisa...I am in the same situation as you....My in-laws speak very little English. My FIL (lives in El Salvador) doesnt speak English at all... my MIL speaks a little bit. They are both wonderful people but the language thing is definatly an opstical. I do not speak Spanish that well, so our conversations are usually made through my husband. When his mom calls, (we have caller ID) I tell him that his mom is on the phone and he picks up!

I never call them either. I'll get into an extended conversation with them if they do call and are willing to chat, but that's about it.
My DH will call my mother about something specific not to chat.
I never call (neither does DH to my parents), but I am happy to talk to MIL when she does...MIL has been in Spain though for 6 months...so b/c its expenisve and the time difference..we haven't spoken in a while...
I think if a couple has children...the wife is more apt to call to tell about what the grandchildren did...

Re: how many of you
You girls are lucky!! If only it were a matter of a phone call!! We live in a basement apartment at their house!! It is mean maybe, but sometimes when I am off I don't go upstairs (shared bathroom) until his dad drives mom to work at 12:30!!! But really, we have a fine relationship....I do stop & chit chat on my way in or or out, so I guess I would probabl call to say hi if I didn't live there!!

Re: how many of you
I rarely call them (and they rarely call us) so it's mutual. If they call and I answer, I'll talk to them but not for long.
They don't usually ask to speak to me so I don't think it's rude.
My DH calls them about once a week or so. They call and ask to talk to him.
