I was pretty adamant that I didnt want to know ANYTHING about a proposal no less pick out my own engagement ring - I wanted it to be a huge surprise.
But it seems almost everyone else I know not only knew about it but picked out their own engagement ring.
What did you do?

Re: How many of you picked out your own ring?
I designed the ring and hubby went with me to get it made. Once it was ready he proposed a second time. The firt time he proposed was w/o a ring. I think either way is fine.

I knew I was getting one eventually, but knew nothing about it (what it looked like, when it would happen, after all it was bound to happen someday, since we'd been together for 7 years already!!!! ) I had told him I wanted a marquise shape... that was it..... but he did take me by surprise with the ring & the proposal!!

Re: How many of you picked out your own ring?
I think Im the dumbest girl ever because we dated for 5 years and I was completely shocked...like knock me over with a feather shocked.
Afterward I called everyone all happy saying stuff like 'can you believe it, we are engaged?' but all our friends were like 'duh! of course youre engaged. its about time'
So for those that were surprised...were you shocked like me? or did you know it was coming?

Re: How many of you picked out your own ring?
Roger did not know anything about the 4 C's he did not even know anything about price, or where to go etc. He was rather new at this. I had to help him somehow.
I was afraid to leave it up to him, to choose the infamous round solitaire which is so not me. I told him I would pick the design and he could do the rest of the work, the man refused. He said he wanted me to be happy b/c I was the one that was wearing it, so he was quite happy that I knew what I wanted. I felt like he just came along to see what he was paying for.

As to the surprise factor I was a bit surprised, we had discussed marriage, but I did not know when he was going to do it. We had been going out for 2 yrs and he popped the question on my b-day after the restaurant. No public display for me

Shamma: MOST of the girls I know have a story just like that. I can totally see what you mean because if I had known Luke was ring shopping, I would have been VERY worried.
(But he shocked me with the EXACT ring I would have picked myself - which is pretty amazing since I am the most picky person ever :D He even got the right size)
Nothing wrong with it at all (sorry if that is what my question implies...not what i meant) - im just curious if Im the only person who didnt know ahead of time and didnt pick the ring out.

Re: How many of you picked out your own ring?
Luke is good I never got that impression from the question. Did you 2 ever discuss marriage or rings etc???
Roger and I wear the same size so I know he would have gotten the right size, just the wrong style and probably yellow gold.
Would you have liked to help pick out your own ring??? It did not bother me one way or another. I kindda wanted him to do it on his own, b/c he always say that I am hard to please. So I kept sending him pix of styles that I liked, he printed them out and walked around with them but never ventured on his own.
When I showed him the kind of style that I like, he went oh, the square one...I was like no honey, its called an emerald cut, if you go to the jeweler and say square they will definitely give you a princess. I don't think emerald cuts are popular

Re: How many of you picked out your own ring?
We looked at rings a few months before my DH proposed. He wanted me have something that I would like. When I got the ring, it was just as if I wasn't involved in the process because a few months had passed before he proposed.

Re: How many of you picked out your own ring?
Nope - no surprise for me. We'd been dating for 4 yrs, and living together for over 1 1/2 yrs, so he took his sweet time proposing! It started to get a little awkward - every holiday people would ask if it happened, etc.
We had talked about it a lot, and I showed him the type of rings I liked, but I was very proud of him. He took the time to research his options, read up on the 4 Cs, what to get, what to avoid, and then picked something. (I even ordered a ring size measurer and gave him my size! ) I wouldn't be that lucky for him to know that.....

I had no idea Stef. Al designed the ring himself since he couldn't find any out there that he liked.
I was suspicious about the proposal - he set up a weekend trip (and he's not a planner), so I thought it was going to happen then. But the ring was a surprise.

I picked out my ring.
Hubby asked me to marry him three times before I actually said yes. I guess he was just making sure before he made a big purchase.
Don't feel bad. We weren't even dating a year when we got engaged and people still were like its about time.

I also wanted a complete surprise and got it. In retrospect, that was a little daring of me, because good taste is NOT one of Patrick's finer qualities, but I LOVE my ring.

Re: How many of you picked out your own ring?
I knew it was coming eventually (like I said ... 7 years later!!!) but not on Christmas eve.. I was sort of thinking it would be few months from then!! But he was very thoughtful about the whole thing actually... he asked christmas eve because my aunt & uncle were here just over night from Virginia & he wanted me to be able to share it with them!! Sweety that he is!! It also shocked me that he ACTUALLY asked me me by the big tree in town, since that was the what I guess I sort of hoped would happen!! We started dating at xmas time & the night that 'I KNEW' I was in love with him was christmas night walking around looking at the very same lights where he proposed!!!

Re: How many of you picked out your own ring?
We had dated for 3.5 years and had talked about getting married, but my engagement came as a total shock as well. I guess I had just assumed we’d wait and I was happy, so I wasn’t pressuring him. We had also just bought a house together, so I knew he wasn’t going anywhere.
What I didn’t know at that time was that when his grandmother died several years ago, his parents had said her diamond engagement ring was his to give to his girlfriend when he proposed. So even though I had often discussed what type of ring I wanted, the family heirloom I know have is just perfect!!

Re: How many of you picked out your own ring?
Our engagement was very discussed & planned due to our kids & all the stuff that goes along with it. We went to our jeweler together to get an education about diamonds-I had a particular setting in mind. He didn't have anything I loved that time so we saw him again the next week & when the jeweler set my lose stone into the setting i have Rich was like a kid-he kept saying 'do like that one, isn't it perfect, do you like it.....' over & over, so I knew it was the right one It still had to be made in my size 4 1/4 and it was holiday time so i wasn't sure when I would get it. Rich puuled off the greatest surprise for the actual proposal though.

Re: How many of you picked out your own ring?
Scott and I went looking at e-rings only once. He knew I wanted an oval stone, a platium setting and that quality was more important to me than quanity. He also knew my ring size. I didn't have ANY idea that he purchased my ring at all. I didn't pick out a specific ring, more a style that I liked.
