I was pretty adamant that I didnt want to know ANYTHING about a proposal no less pick out my own engagement ring - I wanted it to be a huge surprise.
But it seems almost everyone else I know not only knew about it but picked out their own engagement ring.
What did you do?

Re: How many of you picked out your own ring?
Oh Shamma, **pardon while I blush** thanks so much for the compliment. Yeah, it’s funny, after all I had envisioned for my ring, getting an heirloom diamond just blew me away. It’s more than I could ever have imagined. And boy was I surprised!! It belonged to my hubby’s grandmother and word is that it was her mother’s (so my hubby great-grandmother). The story got lost through the ages…. I wear it in the original setting, even though it’s a little big. I just can’t imagine changing it!! Here's a picture I've posted before:
That is it. It is as beautiful as I remember, wear it with pride. I was thinking of my ring, and what sort of legacy it would have for me to leave to someone. I wonder if they will wear it with pride. I would hope so.
Thanks for reposting.

chemlengr- your ring is beautiful.
All of your e-stories are great!!!
We went ring shopping a couple of weeks (it was supposed to be months) before we got engaged because he wanted to see the type of rings I liked and I poined out 3 or 4 different types of settings.
He tried to do everything secretly - but he stinks at keeping a secret and plus I can read him like abook sometimes I knew he had the ring and getting ready to go out to dinner I touched his coat and felt the 'box' accidentally. He proposed that night while we were out to dinner celebrating our one year anniversary. To this day, I agree with him about being surprise about when we got engaged.

We picked out the ring together. He wanted to make sure it was what I would be happy with. I thought that was really nice to do it together.

Great Stories!
Lou pretty much surprised me. He knew I liked square (princess) cut rings and that was it...he did the rest. The poor guy went crazy to try and find a diamond that was a perfect square (which is close to impossible) because of a innocent comment I had made one time that he took to an extreme. He got a perfect ring for me.
As far as the engagement, I was actually surprised when it happened. We have been dating for over 6 years so I knew it was coming soon but didn't expect t when it happened (We were on a vacation/business trip for his job. It was at a gorgeous spa/resort in Telluride, CO which was a romantic setting but never pictured he would do it there because we were on a business trip and I always said I wouldn't want to get engaged on a vacation because I would die to call and see my family.)

Re: How many of you picked out your own ring?
FYI - there are some cute engagment stories in today's Daily News.
here's one.... One guy wanted to propose at the Central Park Zoo but wanted them to be dressed up for the occasion. So he had a fake invitation made up for a party that was to be held there. His GF asked him a million and one questions about the details (where in the zoo, is it black tie, etc) since he had no real answers she threatened to call the zoo. SO he had to make up a bunch of things to surprise her.

I didnt pick it it, he just brought up in a conversation what stone I like. I told him I like the round stone, and him and his mother picked it out.

I was completely blown away too. I had absolutely no idea it was coming when it did. He proposed 10 days before our 7 year anniversary. I had thought it would have been around my birthday which was a few months later. We never went looking at rings together, but he did know the shapes that I liked. He did all his homework, and then picked out the shape that he liked best when he went shopping.

I had no input on my e-ring....Marc did it all himself and may I say he did a wonderful job! I'm so glad I didn't have to be involved..way too many decisions.
As far as the engagement I was shocked! We had spoken about getting engaged and we would browse the jewlery stores but I had no idea he was gonna propose!! It was such a magnificent day When it was happening I remember saying to myself 'OMG, can we do everything again - I want to remember each moment!'

Re: How many of you picked out your own ring?
Gary and I went ring shopping after we had been together 5 years as it was about time!! We went to a few places, good thing he and I saw and learned about diamonds as well, I THOUGHT I liked baguettes until I saw that round side stones sparkle a whole lot more. I didn't think anything more about that day, but he went to the jeweler that next weekend and picked my ring out and proposed less than a month later. I was totally shocked since I didn't think it would happen that fast. I asked him how did he know which ring was right and he said when I looked at the ring he wound up buying, my eyes lit up. Awwww!

We actually looked at rings together a few months before we were engaged. I didn't really give him any input though, - the ring he chose for me and the day he gave it to me were a total surprise! He did an amazing job choosing it, he told me after that he went to so many places trying to find the perfect ring for me - I am so glad I did not pick it out myself!

Re: How many of you picked out your own ring?
I knew that my DH was shopping around. He went with my MOH. He wound up looking at Tiffany's and Cartier! I was like *** did your last name change to Rockefeller?
I didn't mean to pick out my own ring but I was out shopping with one of my Bridesmaids and we just went into jewelry stores for kicks. Then I was like, oh let me try on some rings just to see 'what looks good on my hand'. Of course, i fell in love with a ring- IN THE MALL. I was a little shocked that it happened. So I know about diamonds so I was looking at them through the lupe and it was a very good deal. So I put down $20 to hold everything until we could go back together.
At first my DH was very PO'd at me. But then he was happy that he didn't have to look anymore or deal with the snotty people at Cartier (which is where he was going to buy my ring- isn't that a kick in the face- Sunrise Mall over Cartier!).
But anyway- I love my e-ring. It's a very distinctive setting. My wedding band was given to me by my grandma. It's a platinum fishtail setting with 9 diamonds across the top. It's engraved to say 'Forever Your 1/2/1954 when my grandparents got married- how sweet is that?

Re: How many of you picked out your own ring?
Complete Shock!!!! Matt and I had been together just over a year. We knew we wanted to get married but I never expected it that soon. He didn't tell anyone (except my SIL's sister-she is a jewler and helped him with the ring)
As for the ring...I always thought I wanted a solitare. But the ring Matt picked is beautiful and I love it!
Shamma don't worry we didn't have a 'spectatcle' engagement either. I think the plan started out that way but didn't work out right for him. So it was very romantic in our apartment and considering Matt had to write out his cheat sheet (because he was so nervous) I think it worked out perfect!

Re: How many of you picked out your own ring?
I totally picked out my ring. We went to a diamond broker and picked out the stone then he took us to a setting dealer and we picked out the setting. John did have some input but basicly wanted me to get what I wanted.
The actual proposal was supposed to be a surprise but once he got the ring he couldn't wait. He made reservations and poped the question that night.

Re: How many of you picked out your own ring?
I picked the stone and designed the ring. If I had left it to Jens, I would have ended up with a Tiffany round solitaire. He wouldn't have done any research, chances are he would have just walked in and bought the most expensive thing he could afford.
We already talked about getting engaged, it was just a matter of when. So it was weird when one day he just said 'do you want to look at diamonds today?'
And when I saw the stone I wanted, it wasn't a widely available cut...still isn't so I wanted to do my homework first to make sure he didn't get raped. Good thing I did. That set the ball rolling for everything else. When I was done with the jeweler, he pretty much just sent Jens the bill LOL
He did get on a knee and propose again...with a picture of my ring, after it got lost in the mail.

Re: How many of you picked out your own ring?
Oh and the proposal was on the 4th of July- when the ring arrived in the mail (we shipped it to his work in NJ to not have to pay tax) he left it on my kitchen table in the UPS box.. just to tease me. I knew he'd propose to me on 4th July (even though we had booked the Carlyle on the 23rd....of MAY). So we were in our Pjs.. we had just eaten a HUGE breakfast of pancakes & ham.. I was sitting in bed.. I knew, or course, what was gonna happen- he got down on one knee and we were both laughing so hard he coulnd't even finish the question.
that's nothing new- we laughed all the way through our vows too.

Re: How many of you picked out your own ring?
We shopped together. Both FH and I are horrible at keeping secrets, so a few days after my b-day last december, I mentioned to him not to every buy me 'serious/expensive' jewelry, b/c I am so picky... Since we've dated less than 6 months at that time, marriage wasn't even in my mind (we were on the subway going to a museum).
So then he spilled the truth that he's already looked online at some e-rings. That was the biggest shock/surprise. So that day we went to Tiffany's and during the following 2 months we shopped all over for a setting that we both liked...
In the end, we got our ring from Philadelphia, b/c that jeweler had the most settings available to choose from. FH proposed on our one year anniversary, in the city hall museum in Bruge, Belgium, and while I knew the day when it would happen, I was still a bit surprised
