How on earth could I handle my Landlord? (A little long but I really need advice)

How on earth could I handle my Landlord? (A little long but I really need advice)

DH and I moved into our apartment in November. We are very comfy here and we like the apartment a lot. The neighborhood is wonderful and the price is right! I just can't stand the landlord anymore! We thought about moving, but we really like it here. We have a big 1 br apt with all utilities included for $900 a month (parking included as well). These homes around here go for no less than 1 mil (literately) so DH and I thought we really scored! The only problem is, the landlords live upstairs from us and they are soo annoying!!

They claim their son (I believe he's in his mid-to late 40's) doesn't live here. I really could care less if he did or not, so why would they lie to me about that? His car is always here and they claim he just parks it here. I really don't care if he lives here, so why lie to us? Not really a big deal right? They really are nice people (the owners) and I have not one problem with them.

When DH and I were moving in, I found out he had a daughter. I don't care about that either but SHE IS THE MOST MIS-BEHAVED LITTLE BRAT ON EARTH! Our first night here DH and I past out on the couch with boxes every where because we were exhausted. We forgot to lock our door that leads to their apartment. Well, his little 7 year old girl came down in my apartment while we were sleeping and left a note for us to 'wake up so I can come play with your puppy'. As a parent, how could he allow this? We could have been naked or something lol.

The next day, I let her down here because I felt bad. She wanted to help me put my kitchen stuff away, so because I felt bad, I let her. She dropped a glass Lenox bowl of mine on the kitchen floor and it broke into a million pieces. Her father just stood there and said 'Lets go, so they can clean up' Ummm how about I'm sorry, how much was that? Or, Let me help you? Anything would have been nice! Maybe of your weren't such a drunk, you would have noticed that I was PISSED!

I let it go and DH and I constantly keep our door locked! Now, when his daughter comes to visit (3-5 days/nights a week) she knocks on my door constantly. She must sit at the door all day. She yells at the door 'Jules, Frankie' continuously for hours. I feel bad not letting her down here, but DH and I moved to have our privacy. Not to deal with this!

One day, she had a fit because DH told her she can't play with the dog because I was sick! She threw a temper tantrum in front of DH, me and her father. Screaming and yelling that it's her grandpas house and why can't she come into our apartment. Are we serious?

The next day, I was leaving my house to go to the doctor. I had an allergic reaction and I had hives from head to toe. When I went outside, guess who was sitting on the porch. I tried to act like I didn't see her and she ran up to DHs car and stood in front of the passenger door. Mind you, her father was standing right there. She said 'where are you going'. I told her I was going to the doctor. You know what she said? 'Well, you don't look sick to me'. Ahhhh I wanted to smack her. Then she asked us to unlock the door so she could play with my dog and cat when we weren't home. Of course, when we told her no, she stomped her feet and yelled at us. 'I wanna play with the dog! Daddy, tell them to open the door!' DH said, 'I'm sorry, I'm not' and closed the door. We left as she was screaming and crying.

Since then, all she does is knock on our door all day, every time she's here! (like always) The father never disciplines her at all! She reminds me of the spoiled little brat from Willy Wonka!

On top of all that, maybe 3-4 times a week, his ex-wife comes here as well. For hours and hours, they scream and yell and throw things up there. I don't know what the hell is going on up there at all!

DH and I really don't want to move. Every day my decision is getting closer and closer to a yes. Am I crazy for putting up with this? Should we just move? Or should we say something?

I really feel that I should say something to him, but really it's not my business how they discipline their kid. I don't know exactly how to tell him without being nasty or to invasive. Any suggestions would be great!

I feel better after that vent! TY for reading!

WOW!! there is no way she should be in your apartment when you are not home.. or when you are and you don't want her there. It sounds like her parents really are not intrested in controlling her. I would try and speak to your landlord and tell them that the little girl can not be banging on your door and also screaming at You and DH.. it is not right.

I hope that you get some kind of resolution and that she gets tierd of wanting to bother you soon!!

Wow, that's a lot to deal with.

Can u say something to the landlord like, 'I feel bad for even bringing this up, but DH and I are newlyweds and we still enjoy spending time alone. We think Jane is adorable, but she's constantly knocking on our door and we really need some alone time as husband and wife.'

i think you need to be direct and explain to your landlord that she is not permitted in your apartment. im sorry to sound paranoid but i would not want to be alone with some strange child - who knows what she could go back and tell her parents. . . it is just not worth it.

if they do not respect your wishes i would move out asap - i live in my parents' house and my own nieces and nephews are NOT permitted to knock on my door or come up when they come over - so i would definitely not put up with that.

I wouldn't even go there about the NW part.

I would approach the landlords, first off praising the apartment and how much you like it here, but are not feeling comfortable with having little Susie constantly demanding to come into your apartment and also to play with the dog. You just don't have the time to be a babysitter and watch over little Susie and the dog.
See how they react.
What is the landlord's take on having the son/granddaughter and ex-wife around constantly ? Do they ever mention it to you or shrug it off ?
Maybe that is the reason why your rent is so great, with all the perks. They must have a lot of turnover.

DH and I just left our apartment, our landlords got wacky on us. Thankfully we were able to move back into my co-op, but we just told them that we were moving to a bigger place, none of their business where, and they were both crying the day we left, how we gonna find someone nice like you, blah blah blah.

eta : get a chain lock for your door and put it on. This way even if the brat gets a key and tries to come in, the chain won't let her in.

It so funny you said that because DH put a chain lock on the door about 2 weeks ago. Thank god she hasn't found the key so that she could open the door and yell down.

They never really mentioned it to us. The only thing they told us is if we see a black SUV in the drive way, it's their son's ex-wife. That's basically it. Although, he referes to her as his 'wife' not ex. I don't know, something is fishy about the whole thing. If I'm nice about it, I'm sure it will happen again and if I'm a little more firm, they may harbor bad feelings and start being spiteful. Like blocking the driveway, or making MORE noise or something like that. GRRR I just can't wait to start house shopping!

Bear with it then, keep reminding yourself that it is only temporary until you have your house. It's a great incentive to save even more for the downpayment.

Be cordial to your landlords, pay your rent on time, ignore the brat, don't let her into your apartment, and if she bangs on the door to be let in, call the grandparents to come downstairs to get her before she hurts herself.
If she asks where you are going, just say out. No more than that. She'll keep bugging you for more but don't give in, don't say anything further. Eventually she will tire of the game and realize that you are not a pushover like her parents/grandparents.

I agree with Tilde and Susi. If you really want to try and make it work, you need to nip it in the bud and set boundaries with this kid. I understand you wanting to be nice, but people take advantage then. I would say to speak with the landlord. More than likely, especially the way things are now, she won't want to lose the rent and good tenants, so maybe she will put her son in his place. I don't blame you though for worrying about spitefulness. Hopefully, between speaking to her and starting to back off, maybe the guy will get the hint. I hope things work out for you.

I would say to the londlord that you are not okay with the child coming in the apartment because you do not want to be responsible just in case she falls, etc. If he says he doesn't care its okay just say you and your husband are not okay with it and end it. If you didn't sign a lease I would start packing/searching. I know it is a hard thing to do but you are in a toxic environment. It will only start to effect your relationship with dh.

Wow...that is a really tough situation because you really do have a great deal on that apartment..but wow! do you have a lot to deal with. I would def. bring it up to the landlords because thats insane! I would be extremely pissed off! If nothing changes then move. I understand its a great deal but its not worth the aggrevation you are being put through. You'll find something else. Good luck

Ignore the darn brat...when she knocks turn the tv real real load and let her scream and yell...after a few x's of this she will get the point and won't bother looking at you. I can't stand bad kids!!!! Try the tv thing and if it goes on then talk to your landlord. they have to understand.

I didnt think of that- but now that I am reading it- I think its completely valid. Explain to your landlords that your apartment is not a safe environment for their granddaughter and you have concerns that she could get hurt there and say she cant come over anymore.

and then save, beg, borrow and buy that house soon!

HOLY CRAP!!!! i can't even believe what I just read! I would have already had a talk with the landlord and the father for that matter!!! NOOOOOO WAYYYYYYYY could I ever deal with that! Honestly that is just awful...you should really speak to them and than maybe consider moving out! It doesn't seem like anyone there is doing anything about it or finds it to be a big deal, but it is and it is really just going to make the both of you crazy! Me, I would probably pay a little more to get out of there and have my sanity!

honestly, I would think about moving. I know its hard when you have a nice apartment for a low cost. We had a tenant situation. It all started when we were moving in with the kid just walked in to our apartment. I knew from that moment something was weird. My dad was helping me that day and I told him how uncomfortable it was and to say something to my uncle (he owned the house) but he was like oh its just a little girl shes just curious - she means no harm.
Literally every week, things got worse. The kid wouldnt come into our apartment but she would sit outside and torture us. Then her mother turned out to be a total flake and it turned into a HUGE mess. We got out as soon as we could and are sooooo happy we did.
Good luck - hope everything works out
