how young is too young

Beyonce's 17 yr old sister got married this month. Now I started dating my husband at 17, we loved each other, but we went to college, had fun times with friends, and when the time was right we got married. Marriage is such a compromise of one's self and beliefs, and being mature enough to try and handle in laws, it just seems like 17 is way too young to take that on and still be able to grow into someone who is strong enough to handle marriage.

Re: how young is too young

It's hard to say. Everyone is different. I know mature 20 year olds and immature 30 year olds.

I would not want any decision I made at 17 have to 'stick' for life but there's a girl in my office that got married right about her 18th birthday.

Re: how young is too young

I'm sorry but IMO 17 is WAAAAAYYYYYYYY to young. I even think 23 is too young Hell, 26 is too young . Just kidding, I really believe that I personally am 2000x different person now than I was when I was 17.

I would bet just about ANYTHING that marriage will NOT last

Re: how young is too young

A friend of mine has a very 'romanticized' view of the world...rose colored glasses...the whole nine...anyway, she actually cooks her hubby dinner and serves it to him EVERY NITE by candlelight...okay...puke! But, whatever.

So, one night her and I have plans to do something and she's not going to be there to cook and serve him by candlelight. So, she leaves him a note (complete with drawings of them clinking their glasses in a toast) and tells him that there are fixin's in the fridge for a chicken salad.

But, when he gets home, he does what ANY american male would do - he cracks open a beer and throws a big a$$ steak on the grill. When she called to 'check in' on him, she FLIPS out b/c he did not eat the meal she left for him and b/c he went 'overboard' buying an expensive steak when she is not home to share it, etc. TOTALLY ridiculous fight, IMO...but, I also think the conflict stems from her just being very young when they got married and not being realistic about what marriage would be like. What did she expect - he was going to starve himself in protest b/c she wasn't home for dinner one night???

At 17 you don't know your true self. So, IMO that's WAY to young!!! It's still a fantasy land relationship!!!

Re: how young is too young

17 is so young - you don't even really know yourself yet - how are you supposed to invite someone else to share your world, when you don't even know what your world is yet?

i think the greatest thing i did was marry 'later' in life. DH and I were both 30. i had time to get my education, travel, establish a career, be on my own. i don't regret a single second of it.

Re: how young is too young

I see girls now getting married at 19, 20, 21, and I think to myself....my god....why so young???? You have not experienced life yet!! go out and embrace it and if you come back, with the same feelings that you have now....then enjoy married life!!

I was 'sowing' my wild oats at that age. Drinking, hanging out, going to college, boys....they were all on the agenda but not marriage!!

I do not regret any of my 'wild' times and Im glad I did these things before I meet my husband. When I meet him, in my early 30's I knew this was the person that I would love to settle down with and grow old with....not my 20 year old boyfriend that was getting C's & D's in his classes!!

Re: how young is too young

I think Solange (that's her name) was forced into marriage by her parents. I totally think she is preggo, so she got married to save face.

IMO, I think 17 would have been too young to get married. I met Dh when I was 19- we started going out a year later. We have been together almost 11 years. Had we got married right away- sorry to say this we would be divorced by now. I was in no way ready for marriage- not even in my early twenties.

He and I had a lot of growing up to do,

Bwah!! You crack me up.

I think there are probably cases where 17 years olds can marry and make it a happy life together..but those cases are rare.

Re: how young is too young

I cannot imagine marrying at 17, gosh that is a baby, then again kids these days are a lot more 'older' than I was at 17. Gary and I started dating when I was 22 and he was 20 and we dated a long time before getting married. I agree with Lisa, enjoy your life, you don't have to rush it all away....

I do bet she is preggo!

lol .. but you have to remember not everyone was like that at that age. i got over the partying thing sooner than most people and never drank. and hanging out .. well you can do that when you're married too. and boys .. i told myself when i started college that i wouldn't date a guy unless i could one day see a chance of us getting married (no i wasn't a psycho, just made sure it wasn't some fling).

sure i wonder what it would have been like to wait a couple more years, but hell you'll always wonder 'what if' about something or another! as long as you're committed to each other and not living in some dreamy romantic world, i think it'll be ok

Re: how young is too young

WAY to young in my opinion. I remember thinking 'Yikes I don't even have a boyfriend' when I graduated college, so my chances of getting married were slim. But I think back now and can't even imagine being married at 21, 22, or anything before 26ish. So many great things can happen in your early 20's. It is the time to live on your own, establish who you are and your perspective on life and what you want to get out of it. Party a little, be a free spirit. Granted, I am by no means saying that once you are married you can't do these things, but there is something about the excitement of being out in the world for this first time on your own. At least for me that is how it is. Plus all of the things that I did in my early-mid twenties eventually brought me to Dallas which led me to DH.
