At 17 you don't know your true self. So, IMO that's WAY to young!!! It's still a fantasy land relationship!!!

17 is WAY too young...I agree with you completely!

Re: how young is too young

think 17 is too young to get married? I see several girls on the TTC boards who are only 20 and 21 and wanting advice on babies - NOW thats too young.
my advice - give yourself time to grow up, change, and live life as a carefree person first. I don't think these girls realize that from 18 - 26 you change ALOT.
why are they in such a rush???

Re: how young is too young

my mother was married at 19 (almost 20) and while I do beleive she was 'mature' ...she told me she cried her wedding night - b/c she was scared of leaving her parents house...

she also stayed with a man for 40 years that was less than desirable IMO...

and I do think that she missed out...and that is why she always pushed my sister and me to do things...travel...go to grad school...live a single life...etc...

the babies thing scares me. that's such a huge responsibility! immaturity and marriage is one thing, but immaturity and having children is another! but at the same time, i'll stand behind my comment that some people are just more mature at certain ages than the rest of the general population at that age.

Re: how young is too young

My mother, like Yabbobay's was also married at 19 but that was in 1962!! Back then, my mom went to an all Girls School in Brooklyn and if you didnt have an engagemene ring by the time you graduated...you were the odd man out. Most of my mothers GF's were married right after high school!! These days we woman have soooooooooo many more choices to do with our live....college, careers, traveling!!

I wonder if statstics were taken of the ages of people getting married at a young age (meaning 18-23) vs people at an older age (say 29-40) I bet more end in divorse at the younger age. JMO

Re: how young is too young

there is a girl named Spot on TTC who is 20. But that's her preference - so we shouldn't say anything. Maybe some people are more mature than others and this is the life they have chosen.

About the whole 60s thing - my mom said that when she got married in the 70s at age 23 - she was considered an old maid! LOL

There was a girl that used to work here that felt that way. She used to get in big fights with her BF because she wasn't engaged but all her friends were. She was 20-21 then. She's married and has a baby now.

Re: how young is too young

I also think 17 is too young. At that age I didn't know whether I was coming or going. I agree that some women mature faster than other's but it's still so young.

I think during your teens and 20's it's a time when you are growing and changing the fastest. Taking on the responsibility of a household, husband and even a child is a lot!

Then there are those who got married as a teenager and years later they end up feeling like they missed out on life. It's good to date, finish school, travel and just do your own thing. I know someone who got married at 24 and they had a baby and have been married less than a year and she's always overwhelmed and unhappy b/c so much is on her. Now she wants to hang with her single friends and travel and do all the things she missed out on.

Re: how young is too young

with all the princess diana stuff on the news/news magazines...it made me think about this thread...

she was 19...and I am pretty sure she was pretty mature at the time...although I was 7 when she was married...so I am sure that a 16 looked mature to me then...but in all the biographies of her life...she was raised to be a lady and mature...and I feel so sad that she was blinded by the royal family and the ideas of marriage...pushed to have children early...stuck in a marriage where she resorted to get the press to help her...which ultimately killed her

There are statistics about that! I did a speech on marriage once...you have a lesser chance of getting divorced if you marry after you're 30 than before....I don't remember the specific numbers but I do remember that!

Re: how young is too young

It all depends on the person's maturity level rather than just age. However, I will say that I am an advocate for waiting until you are a bit older and more secure (emotionally & financially) to get married and start a new family.

Re: how young is too young

17 is way too young in my opinion. no matter how mature you are. i teach 17-year-olds every day. what a disaster that will be.

eta: i also think diana was too young to be married at 20. i think so many of her issues relate back to her marrying young (& into that crazy family, of course).

Re: how young is too young

I really can't see how any 17 yr old is ready, regardless of how mature they are..... JMO.

I think starting a marriage at 17 is destined to fail at such a young age
