Ours were supposed to meet at the engagement party at the end of June, last year (though they had spoken on the phone before). But my grandmother passed away the first week of June, and DH's parents and a couple of his sybllings came to the wake. Although it was obviously not the ideal way to meet, i felt like there wasn't as much awkwardness as there would have been if it was like a sit down dinner or something. And, at least they got to meet each other before meeting the whole rest of the family.
we had been together for 3 years at that point (my mom used to give me grief that it took that long, but what are ya gonna do).
How long did it take for everyone else? How did it go?

Ours met for the first time at the rehearsal dinner! It wasn't supposed to be that way, but DH's folks live in PA and there are health issues all around, so it was tough.
BUT they hit it off so well. Our moms talk on the phone at least once a week (and this actually started almost as soon as we got engaged). I wish our families lived closer because everyone really got along well.

My in-laws are very difficult (I'm being kind)and caused us much stress before the wedding.

We got engaged at the beginning of May and they met at the end of June. Dh's parents invited my parents out to dinner and then to their place for dessert. They live in the Bronx so they don't my parents often.

Ours met when Brad and I were only dating for about 4 months. We were in college and my parents came up to visit the weekend of his a cappella group's concert. They came to the concert with me, and we sat with brad's parents. After the show, Brad and I went to the group's party, and our parents went out for coffee together! I remember that we were so nervous about them all going out together.

I believe we had moved in together already so we were dating for about 2 1/2yrs. My SIL was teaching an adult dance class. My MIL, mom and aunt all signed up for it.

They met when we were dating for about 5 months. They met at a show that both of us were in but it was very brief. Now they go out together for dinner and come over for holidays.

Inlaws lived 30 minutes away from my parents for 4 years. My parents met MIL at the wedding, 8 years into our relationship. My parents have never met FIL, he was mad and did not come to wedding.

We were together for 4 1/2 years when we got engaged & we went out to dinner with both sets of parents & my brother about 3 months later. ( about 8 motnhs before the wedding)
I think MIL thought that was alittle late, but I didn't think it was necessary before that.

Our parents met when we were moving into our apartment. They were all helping with painting and moving in and so on, it was about a month before we got engaged.
