Ours were supposed to meet at the engagement party at the end of June, last year (though they had spoken on the phone before). But my grandmother passed away the first week of June, and DH's parents and a couple of his sybllings came to the wake. Although it was obviously not the ideal way to meet, i felt like there wasn't as much awkwardness as there would have been if it was like a sit down dinner or something. And, at least they got to meet each other before meeting the whole rest of the family.
we had been together for 3 years at that point (my mom used to give me grief that it took that long, but what are ya gonna do).
How long did it take for everyone else? How did it go?

DH's family still lives in Israel, and we got married very quickly (technically, 3 months after the engagement - formal reception was 8 months after the engagement). So, although I met DH's family early on when we travelled to Israel, technically, our families didn't meet until the rehearsal dinner!

They met in stages. My FIL met my mother at the same time I met DH. We were all working together at a convention. MIL met my parents about one week before we got engaged. She came to NY for Thanksgiving. FIL met my father at an engagement party my parents had. DH's entire family flew in. That was one year before we got married.
Now every time my parents come to visit MO they hang out with them.

Our moms met first and then our dads met when my parents had a BBQ and invited them.

My mom met my FIL at our engagement party. My dad and stepmom didn't meet FIL until our rehearsal dinner. We had tried to get our dads out to dinner to meet beforehand but things just kept coming up!!

We were engaged in December and we had the parents GTG sometime in February, I think
It was supposed to be much sooner but health issues on both sides kept delaying the dinner .. and the fact that we live over 1 hr apart kept screwing things up with the weather, etc
The meeting of the folks went really well, actually - the mom's in particular really got along SO well and then keep in touch by email and calls a few times a month. Its kinda cute

Our parents met 2 months after we were engaged. We had a engagement dinner where DH's parents invited my parents to discuss our wedding plans and our future. We've dated 5 years before being engaged.

We had a dinner after we got engaged for everyone to meet. Then since my parents are divorced my dad flew up seperately and we had a BBQ for him to meet my ILs

My parents met my FIL and his wife and daughter when we picked up my DH from the airport about 4 days before the wedding. It was a coincidence that DH's flight and FIL's flight were getting in at the same time. Then, my dad met my MIL when we picked her up at the airport the next day. When we got back to my parent's house (she stayed there for the night), my entire family - mother, grandmother, aunt & her husband, brother and SIL - were all sitting in the living room waiting to meet her. It was so embarrassing!
