Huntington: Repost from Home Board

Does anyone live in Huntington? I was looking at a few houses online there and it looks like a nice area. I see there are a number of different school district (1, 3, 13). Can someone let me know which is the most desirable school district? Feel free to FM me if you don't feel comfortable posting.

Re: Huntington: Repost from Home Board

I'm not sure what the school district #s are, but I know the names...I grew up in Huntington

Huntington UFSD (my mom works there - she is in a good neighborhood for elementary schools...but they aren't all like that) has had major problems...they were under investigation by the state...but not taken over yet...but I think they were in the bottom 10 for LI...in the harbor area...there are a lot of kids sent off to private school

South Huntington is better...

I'm thinking the third is Cold Spring Harbor? which is probably one of the top districts in LI...they have 100$ grad rate and 100% to college...but its very small...and taxes are probably enormous...

something to think about...the school district #6 (Harborfields - where I went) is next to Huntington(Greenlawn/Centerport) and it is a sought after school district...its on the small side...and you still get the water...and small community

Re: Huntington: Repost from Home Board

I lived in Huntington until I got married last year.
Elwood is District #1 and it is a very high rated district with a small population.

I hear the main Huntington's district is pretty bad, with gangs, etc.

My cousin recently moved within the town of Huntington to get into the Elwood school system (her kids went to Huntington) and she says the two districts are like night and day.

Harborfields is also top rated and a nice size. Your taxes will be higher in Elwood and Harborfields because of the better schools.

What I liked about Huntington is that it is close to everything (shopping malls, great parks, and an hour from the city) and you have a cute town, too, with a hip cinema arts center, cool restaurants, and plenty of coffee shops.

The Huntington Fall Festival is Columbus Day Weekend at Hecksher Park (sort of the center of Huntington). That may be a good time to visit the town as there will be plenty of vendors and residents to talk with (though it will be crowded).

I miss living there (I live in Holtsville now). It is worth checking out, depending on what you're looking for.

If you have any questions, FM me and I will try to answer them.

oh...I forgot about Elwood...its a very good district...and there were always rumors that since Harborfields and Elwood were good schools and so small that they would merge...don't know if thats happening though...

the only difference is in Harborfields you have the water...Elwood you have the farms...

Re: Huntington: Repost from Home Board

Good luck looking for a house!

I grew up in Huntington. Went to school in the South Huntington School District (13 I think). I had an excellent education there, however, I graduated from HS 10 years ago. I have heard that the district has not done so well in the past 10 years. I don't think the quality of education is as good as it was. Definitely ask people who have kids in the school system right now.

Also, south huntington has some really nice areas and some really bad areas. Do your homework!
