Has anyone seriously considered relocating? I have family down south and DH is always saying we should move. It is so much cheaper there and I love it but to find a new job, home, new friends??? It is all very overwhelming. Just wondering if anyone is in the same situation.

And it seems that we're going ahead...plan is the next 3 months...if I get a job sooner, then sooner it will be.

Re: I know this has been discussed before but
DH and I are hopefully moving next month to Colorado (we're in Virginia right now). We're getting transferred with our company, but leaving our old friends and making new friends will be hard Housing is much more affordable where we're going. And the weather is gorgeous! We can't wait to get out of Virginia.

If you can believe it we are considering moving to Baldwin County, AL (near Mobile or Pensacola Fl). My sister lives there and I have been many time and I love it. My parents are going to retire there in a few years.

Let me just say, that the City of Charlotte, North Carolina is gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous!!! The people are extraordinarily friendly, the housing is beautiful and affordable, it's clean down there, and the city itself is very family oriented. I hope to move there one day in the future. Right now my family is here.

My aunt moved from GA to AL...but she didn't have such a positive experience and moved back. I hear housing it's very cheap there...although the job market is a little stagnant. The thing about the South right now is that it's going through a pop surge due to displaced Hurricane Katrina victims, so that will either help or hurt local economies.
I wish you luck and clarity...I know this is a TOUGH decision.

We are seriously thinking about it. We are going to wait it out a few years and see what happens.

We moved to Delaware - DH was transferred.
We love it and there's not a day that goes by that we regret the move.

Re: I know this has been discussed before but
We moved to Wilmington NC a few motnhs ago, and let me tell you - we as individuals and as a couple have NEVER BEEN HAPPIER!!!
It's beautiful, clean, safe, and living is EASY!!! We are renting right now, but looking to buy in the next year. We live 10 minutes from the most beautiful, uncrowded beach, and everything we need is here. People are nice. That means so much. New York will always be a home to us, and we'll go back twice per year for holidays (and good food and theater!) but for day to day sanity, the South has my money.
Yes it was hard to leave family and friends, but I wasn't going to spend my life feeling like I had to live in close proximity to my parents forever. Thats bondage as far as I am concerned! One of DH's sisters feels like she can't 'leave' her parents, and she completely hates her life and resents us for doing it.
There are planes, trains and automobiles. Family is a quick ride away. As far as making new friends, thats fun. The old ones are still friends (and let me tell you - like the wedding, it takes only a litle time to see who your real friends are when you move away.) And honestly, I would prefer having a good friend visit once per year for some quality time together than see them once a month for a rushed cup of coffee in Manhattan. You know?
Good Luck in whatever you choose. Its not an easy decision. I can't tell you how many couples said to us 'Wow - we give you guys alot of credit. We wish we could do that, but...' It was insane how many people came up to us and felt trapped in the northeast, but did nothing to change it. Theres just no excuse for not making a better life for yourself if the one you live now is not working. We live in a country where it is possible to live and be whatever you want, and I love taking advantage of that!
Let me know if you want to know anything about NC (one of the fastest growing states in the country!)

Re: I know this has been discussed before but
We moved to Fort Myers, FL in January and I won't lie at first it was hard. No friends, no family. But now it is great. We are buliding a brand new house , something that could never be done on long island, let alone NY. It is very clean and safe here. The weather is beautiful. Always sunny. DH and I have great jobs. I do get home sick and miss my family, but I pick up the phone and call them. See my DH's family moved here to the US 26 years ago and left all of their family and friends in Ireland behind them in order to make a better life for them and DH. SO we figure if they could travel all of that distance and make new friends and make it we could move to FL and make it

Re: I know this has been discussed before but
We would, except our families are in LI, NJ, NY state. We have some good friends here also, and proximity to these people keeps us in the area. Also, while I could probably find a job anywhere in the country with little trouble, FHs work is more specialized and centered in NYC. We'll see what happens when we start looking for homes though.
Housing costs disgust me. Despite the fact that our combined incomes put us in one of the upper income brackets in the nation, I still think there is not much within a reasonable commute of Manhattan (1 hour or less) that we could afford. Since we both work in the city, this is important to us. I sometimes wonder who buys these 1 million plus homes--what do these people do for a living? Or are they just in incredible debt? Oh well, enough with the ranting!
