I'm a married woman! Steps to changing last name...?

Hi Girls! I just returned from Hawaii!
Now, on to changing my last name. It seems I have to wait to get my marriage license in the mail (my rabbi too it after our wedding to mail it out)... then I go to social security office and DMV?

TIA for those who have already done this!

I'm guessing I can do credit cards online?

Re: I'm a married woman! Steps to changing last name...?

That sounds right to me! A few people had some luck sending everything into the SS office, but their website says you can't do it that way so I just went down there myself. You can change your bank account/credit cards once you change your SS card. And your passport, if you have one, needs to be changed through the mail.

Re: I'm a married woman! Steps to changing last name...?

The credit cards cant be changed online. Address yes- name no. You have to call your credit card company. Some will do it for you over the phone. Others you will have to fax/send a copy of your marriage license to prove your name change. Also you have to change everything at work. If you are putting DH on your insurance (or if he is putting you on his) it usually has to be done within a certain time frame or you will have to wait till the next sign up period.

Also, dont forget to change it on your W4s if you and DH plan on filing jointly.

Re: I'm a married woman! Steps to changing last name...?

Talk to your employer. Maybe the comptroller or whoever handles the payroll. They should be able to print out the W4 for you to fill out.

This will change your name and your marital/filing status. and help avoid any problems come April.

its easier do do everything at once. While i was there, i changed my name, changed my address, registered to vote in my new district and changed the title of my car to my new name. If you go first thing in the morning you are our of there in less than ½ hour!
I've heard that some girls mail in their SS info, but again, i just went first thing in the morning and was out 15 minutes later.

they do, both places want to see it and since i only have the one copy i wasn't willing to part with it and put it in the mail. i thought it was just easier to go in person.
