I Need a Job

Original post by MLAngelo

So I am subbing, but I cannot do this. This is the third morning in a row (weekday), and probably the 10th total (and I didn't start until mid-Oct) that I have gotten up, showered, put on makeup and then watched TV hoping for a job for the day. I am constantly refreshing my computer browser and either seeing no postings or just missing them to someone else who gets to it a second sooner. Its getting harder and harder to motivate myself to get out of bed.

I work less days then I am at home.

DH is just making our bills. I need to be able to buy our groceries and other things we need. I seriously need a job I know I am getting up to every day.

At this point I really don't care what the job is as long as it doesn't kill my whole weekends since its the only time I see DH.

I have a bachelors in history, a masters in film and electronic media and a masters in education. I also am great with In Design and Photoshop and did a lot of promotional materials for the TV show I used to work for such as pamphlets, brochures and post cards. I also have run many promotional events for the same show, including on camera meet and greets in high profile locations such as the Boston Commons and most notably running Kid Fitness Day at Shea Stadium, a huge promotional event with NYC kids before the Mets game.

If anyone knows of anything please let me know. FM me. Thanks so much.

I would be happy to do retail - again for me they see the last 8 years of exp in education & I cant even get an interview...Im being profiled & it $uck$

Leave some of that off your resume.....if you are ok wiht taking a job lower than you qualifications then you need to make a different resume or fill out the application different....also nows the time...plenty of holiday workers being hired

Unfortunately Ive tried that - when employers ask - then what have you been doing for the past 8 years - I have to tell the truth which brings me back to square 1 again.

I am in the same boat. We are actually doing okay with me on unemployment and DH doing well at work. However, as a person who LOVES to be constantly busy and moving, it's really tough. I had a great job and got laid off. Since July, I have been looking. I am apparently 'over qualified' for most of the stuff which is annoying. I must have applied to over 200 jobs since July. Nothing is clicking. So, I can def feel your pain.

i like to be busy, too. I've been looking into things outside of teaching...it's not even about money anymore I'm just BORED.

i don't know what subject/grade you are certified to teach, but i do homebound tutoring which keeps me busy in addition to subbing. I can give you the info for the company, FM me.

Also, make sure you are putting in your resume for every possible district subbing. You are probably doing this already but i found that some districts do nothing with the resumes, and others called all the time. I can also pass on the info for the ones that call all the time.

Good luck, i hope it makes you feel somewhat better to know there are others of us in the same boat!!

I'm certified Social Studies 7-12.

I am subbing in three districts, I just never get called. I think each district has tons of subs. I will see a posting on Aesop or Absence Track and by the time I click it, its gone. Its ridiculous. These stupid computerized systems make it impossible.

I know they say subbing is the best way to become a teacher, but I really don't want to sub. I can't stand not knowing if I am working the next day.

i hated subbing, too. I like the homebound tutoring better. You basically work with students who are ill (like surgery, etc) or suspended. It's good for extra income.

I don't know if you're in Nassau, but i got called all the time from Island Trees district for subbing. Hicksville was also very busy, always looking for subs, too.

All this being said, as I said in PP, i am also considering things outside of teaching now. It's so frustrating to have a degree and feel like there is little chance of getting a job right now.

I hate the boredom of being home and I am super bored when I am subbing too. Its not like you get to teach them anything, usually you just sit and watch them do the assignment. It makes me crazy. I need to be actively doing something. I would rather be at home cleaning my bathroom then staring at kids doing their assignments for hours. I loved student teaching, but subbing is not that.

Like this one day...

I watched as kids did their on computer music projects for two periods with their headphones on.
Sat on hall duty for two periods.
Had a period off
Did library duty for one period
Had lunch
then had two periods of computer lab study hall, where the kids played games and did homework on the computer which was the highlight of my day.

I wanted to kill myself.

On a brighter note, I got a job interview for Wed. Its a two day a week job but in an office and will involve some skills and play towards my design and organization skills.

That is two days a week I know I am working. If I get it, but its a step in the right direction.

We are trying to convince MIL to let us move FIL's business to NY. She and DH are running it from home, while FIL is dealing with his brain trauma issues. But its taking a toll on DH, going to NJ to do the office work all the time and getting interrupted during his own work day to make calls for the business, and MIL has a full time job. I could run that and then I wouldn't have to do this anymore... but its been 2 years and she won't let us move it.

Personally I think she likes it because it forces DH to go there often.
