I Need a Job

I Need a Job

So I am subbing, but I cannot do this. This is the third morning in a row (weekday), and probably the 10th total (and I didn't start until mid-Oct) that I have gotten up, showered, put on makeup and then watched TV hoping for a job for the day. I am constantly refreshing my computer browser and either seeing no postings or just missing them to someone else who gets to it a second sooner. Its getting harder and harder to motivate myself to get out of bed.

I work less days then I am at home.

DH is just making our bills. I need to be able to buy our groceries and other things we need. I seriously need a job I know I am getting up to every day.

At this point I really don't care what the job is as long as it doesn't kill my whole weekends since its the only time I see DH.

I have a bachelors in history, a masters in film and electronic media and a masters in education. I also am great with In Design and Photoshop and did a lot of promotional materials for the TV show I used to work for such as pamphlets, brochures and post cards. I also have run many promotional events for the same show, including on camera meet and greets in high profile locations such as the Boston Commons and most notably running Kid Fitness Day at Shea Stadium, a huge promotional event with NYC kids before the Mets game.

If anyone knows of anything please let me know. FM me. Thanks so much.

Re: I Need a Job

Im in the same boat as you Michelle - I feel your pain & know EXACTLY how you feel. Not having a job & having to stretch the almighty dollar really causes some arguments sometimes - when it's not like I dont WANT to work...I just CANT find a job!

I'm so sorry you are going through this....

Unfortunately, you aren't the only one, I have many really good friends who are Social Studies Teachers who can't find jobs, and have been out of college for much longer.

You should get on a few sub lists in your area, and keep hoping for a leave replacement to open.

I was a social studies teacher, but didn't persue for this reason.

Sorry I can't offer a positive answer. Being a teacher on Long Island is HARD, especially a Social Studies one.

Good Luck.

Have you looked into teaching positions at Suffolk Community College? I know when I was looking (not for a teaching job, but for a job in science), these postings came up a lot. I would think that because you have teaching experience, you'd be a good fit.

Re: I Need a Job

To all you ladies...

I have an advise that worked for me.. (a bit long)

Well I have been working for this company F/T for 2 years..Also going to school F/T.. Well right before the wedding I got a promotion (with 2 direct reports).. Obviously with the promotion came a GOOD $$ compensation with bonuses!! At the end of the day I wasnt happy with the fact I wasnt spending time with my DH!! After carefully considering my options I spoke to my boss about working from home or contracting work.. To my surprise he said 'well whatever works for you than that works for me' .. So as of January 1st, I will be working from home under my own company..

He did say MANY companies are considering contracting work more so these days to avoid paying all the benefits that come along with it! Fix up your resume and start contracting work from home with agencies.. You'll be surprise what you find.

Also, with congress passing these laws about unemployed going back to school.. My college is full of students and they are hiring Professors left and right.. Consider teaching college students for a bit until things pick up.. Trust me everything will work out..

We should start a topic with job postings for newlyweds.. I'm always searching and hear of things... Stay Positive Ladies

i don't know what subject/grade you are certified to teach, but i do homebound tutoring which keeps me busy in addition to subbing. I can give you the info for the company, FM me.

Also, make sure you are putting in your resume for every possible district subbing. You are probably doing this already but i found that some districts do nothing with the resumes, and others called all the time. I can also pass on the info for the ones that call all the time.

Good luck, i hope it makes you feel somewhat better to know there are others of us in the same boat!!

I'm certified Social Studies 7-12.

I am subbing in three districts, I just never get called. I think each district has tons of subs. I will see a posting on Aesop or Absence Track and by the time I click it, its gone. Its ridiculous. These stupid computerized systems make it impossible.

I know they say subbing is the best way to become a teacher, but I really don't want to sub. I can't stand not knowing if I am working the next day.

Awwww! I feel your pain! Im subbing too and fortunately I only sub in one school district and I work almost everyday. The worst part is hearing the phone ring at 5am What i usually do is shower the night before. When the phone rings I get up , do my hair and go to work. I dont need as much time to get ready if I already showered the night before, so i dont get up unless they call me.

Thanks... I wish my hair was more cooperative. If I shower at night by morning its one giant knot. But I should try that. But do you ever get called like 20/30 minutes before a job? Thats happened to me, which ruins the not waking up unless I get called part.

Also is your school on an electronic system? Unless I am on actively refreshing my browser it seems impossible to get called. All the jobs get grabbed. I thought it sounded so nice but its horrible.

No I've never been called that soon before! Thats nuts! Yes my school district is on Aesop and thats how I get most of my jobs. When Im not working i sit on it all day and just refresh the page. Ive gotten tons of jobs by doing that! It works really well for me.

Re: I Need a Job

And I am off LI - living right near New Paltz & there are NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO jobs - barely even anyone advertising for sub jobs.

I have tried other fields like customer service, office/admin asst positions & also retail (which I also have prior exp). It just seems that no one wants to hire me b/c they see all the educational background & exp on my resume & figure once I get hired I'll leave as soon as I find a teaching job - but at this rate that may not be for another 4 years! I cant wait that long. This has been the worst part ever for me & DH -when we argue - it's 95% usually about money & how come I cant fid a job & how come Im not just going door to door until I find something. I wish it was that easy - It USED to be - Ive never had a problem getting a job before - even a clerical one. I have put my name & resume in w/4 different temp agencies in the area - and even THEY are desperately seeking out jobs for people....it's absoultely horrible! I figured I would just give in & go teach in the city - even THEY have a hiring freeze which is UNHEARD of. I'd still be willing to work in NYC if it meant I was at least making a little more than what it would cost me for the commute alone. I dont care what I do - like you Michelle - I just NEED a job - I have so many bills that I am falling behind on & now I am worried that my credit is going to crap & if it does that will only cause more tension between me & DH. I honestly just have NO idea what else to do at this point. It's getting to the point now where I cry almost every day ( a little bit) b/c I have never ever been in this position & have no idea how to get out of it.

Sorry for the vent but thanks for listening/reading

Where do you live? My district is ALWAYS short on subs!

Re: I Need a Job

I am in the same boat. We are actually doing okay with me on unemployment and DH doing well at work. However, as a person who LOVES to be constantly busy and moving, it's really tough. I had a great job and got laid off. Since July, I have been looking. I am apparently 'over qualified' for most of the stuff which is annoying. I must have applied to over 200 jobs since July. Nothing is clicking. So, I can def feel your pain.

Why not get a retail job or wait tables until you can find a job.....I would say at this point its money so I would take almost anything

Tomlaur0808 Posted:

Re: I Need a Job

I would be happy to do retail - again for me they see the last 8 years of exp in education & I cant even get an interview...Im being profiled & it $uck$

Leave some of that off your resume.....if you are ok wiht taking a job lower than you qualifications then you need to make a different resume or fill out the application different....also nows the time...plenty of holiday workers being hired
