I need to vent.

I need to vent.
I am so sick of seeing complaints about lack of plowing and what a horrible job sanitation is doing plowing.DH got called in on CHRISTMAS. I haven't seen him since yesterday morning at 7AM. He worked 12 hours yesterday and 14 hours today. Every snowstorm he comes home exhausted from all the hard work these guys are doing. They work long, tiring hours and don't get to see their families.
It just upsets me they got so little recognition from people.

Re: I need to vent.
Colleen - I totally appreciate your feelings on this, I really really do. And I think its so sad that the conditions of the city, and the size of the city, are making the plowing so difficult. I 100% truly believe that your DH and his coworkers are working SO hard and doing an amazing job! That said, my street and the surrounding blocks haven't been plowed at all. I know that isn't anyone's fault (well, its someone's fault but definitely not your DH!) But it is still frustrating and scary to me to wonder how I'm going to get to work tomorrow. Its just a bad situation for everyone because the blowing snow, he size of the city and people's inability to stay off the roads have led to this- so I guess I'm trying to say when I complain about the lack of plowing I'm not complaining about the people who are working hard to get it done, I'm complaining that Mother Nature dumped this on us!BUT I want to thank your DH and his coworkers for all their amazing, hard hard work!!

Re: I need to vent.
Thanks Mer
I understand people's frustrations as well. The snow plow kept coming down and plowing my car in until it was up past the door! But it feels like everyone is blaming the sanitation guys...who are just out there doing their jobs and working hard, long hours!

Re: I need to vent.
The Sani guys are working crazy hard!!!DH was working and sent to help an ambulance who was stuck with a passenger in it....he gets there and there's not only the ambulance but also 3 cars and then his plow truck gets stuck too.
it was just really really bad conditions out last night and people were on the road all over the place and getting stuck. it puts a damper on the plowing situation.
Also, there was too much snow in certain areas where the plows couldn't even go down.
he's back at work now.... left around 5 pm for his 7pm to 7am shift.
they DEF work hard!!! The main roads are the important ones for now. As the days pass it will get better and better. ALL the guys are working.... they even get called in off their vacation if they happened to take off.
ETA: I'm right there with you... it's a bit annoying to keep hearing people complaining about it. I mean there were white out conditions where you could not see until this morning... and it's like people just expect every street including their own to be plowed the moment the snow stops and that's just not possible.... esp not with this amount of snow.....

Re: I need to vent.
Honestly, I appreciate the job that they do. Everyone is just doing the best that they can to get everything situated. We're lucky that we have people plowing the roads, and aren't off in some place where we are just trapped outside in the snow or something.

Re: I need to vent.
Colleen - I understand and I love them for being out working in this cold. Charlie works for New York City Transit and they called him in too. He is located on 9 Street in Brooklyn. He drove in that mess to walk the tracks with supplies.

Re: I need to vent.
My brother in law left on Christmas night and didn't get home until midnight on Monday night. He was home for 4 hours and went back. He was a lunatic when he made it home after 2 days. 35 plows broke down. So many people abandoned their cars in the street when they got stuck and the plows couldn't go down the blocks. When I spoke to him yesterday, he was crazed. I feel bad for everyone out there!!

Re: I need to vent.
aahhh people are bringing this up on LIF too!! it's ridiculous that people and the media are blaming the DSNY workers. They are working so hard. Perhaps the media and complainers should get their assses in a plow and see what it's like.

Re: I need to vent.
I'm surprised anyone could lay the blame with the sanitation workers. They can only follow the instructions they are given!
I blame Bloomberg.

Re: I need to vent.
Generally, they do a great job. If anyone is to blame, it's not the men and women out there doing the hard work, it's upper management (as is usually the case in most organizations!)

Re: I need to vent.
I definitely complain (in life, not actually on LIW or LIF) about the lack of plowing, but I never complain about the people doing the work. I live in an incorporated village and pay additional taxes on top of the already high nassau county taxes and I have no problems admitting that I expect to be able to drive my car after it has stopped snowing for 24 hours. At the train station this morning. only one lot was plowed, and it was conveniently the lot you had to pay to park in. The lot that my yearly pass (that I pay for) allows parking was unplowed.i generally think that the people calling the shots were not making the best decisions, not necessarily the ones doing all the work.

Re: I need to vent.
Thanks girls! It's true- they just don't have enough guys. There are so many streets in NYC and only so many plows (and then factor in the fact they can't even get down certain streets and there are cars blocking intersections). They're just tryin to do their job!

Then have someone like me who lives in NYC and I was so impressed with how early and fast they plowed our street!Granted I live right off the 59th Street bridge but they were out there early to do it.

Re: I need to vent.
Colleen- I totally feel for you. I too am fustrated- My neighbor hood still hasnt been plowed and here it is Tuesday afternoon I dont blame the DSNY. I blame the almighty Mayor Bloomberg who recent laid off all those sanitation workers. Maybe if they had the full force the streets could have been cleaned.I know they are doing the best they could

Re: I need to vent.
I live in Nassau County and I have to say we were plowed out rather early and efficiently. You can't blame the sanitation guys for plowing in your car, where's the snow supposed to go? Especially when there's almost 2 feet of it.
HOWEVER, we do pay RIDICULOUS taxes... so it's so difficult to see when things aren't done when we are paying for them... but it's certainly not the sanitation guys fault.....
They can only do what they are told... just like most of us at our own jobs! Everyone's got a boss.

Re: I need to vent.
While I agree the mayor handled the snow removal poorly SOME of the sanitation workers are not doing a great job. I arrived at my parent's house late this afternoon and watch THREE snow plows just sitting on the avenue. One of the neighbors walked over and asked if they were going to plow the block and did anyone need to move their cars and the response was NO! They had no plans to plow the block today. This was after they neighbors spent three hours trying to clear the block. I do not know what the reason was that this block was skipped...it seems a little crazy that the neighbors cleared the block while three plows sat at the end of the block. I feel bad for the guys out there doing their jobs but not everyone was working hard today.
