We were at their house for dinner, and I said oh, on the 30th, we are having cake for stuart (DH) at our apt. shes like 'THE 30TH, HIS BDAY IS THE 28TH' and she then went upstairs
I had this whole nice night planned for his bday, make him a nice dinner, romantic candles, etc etc and now im all mad and my stomach hurts
i guess she assumed that we would spend his bday with them?? idk. i thought that doing it on the weekend would be easier, given that it is unknown when DH will be coming home from work, everyone works the next day and its our first married bday in our own place...
UGHHHHHHH
sorry, i guess im just venting. everytime i think i have a good compromise, i clearly realize i dont.

Re: i somehow just surprised my MIL....
It was nice of you to tell her in advance. I would go on with you plans and let DH speak to her. That was not a nice reaction to something you were doing.

UGH! That's irritating. Tell her it's time to cut that cord! She's no longer number one in your DH's life. She needs to come to terms with the fact that you and DH are now your own family and will plan accordingly.
I hope that you stand your ground and keep the plans the way you had them originally!

Re: i somehow just surprised my MIL....
My MIL has to do everything right on the actual day. IDK i dont get it because my mom has always been the type to celebrate whenever we all could be together. So once it came down to the fact that somethings like my bday & Mothers Day always seem to land right near each other that she (MIL) would have to understand if we need to celebrate Mom's day the sat. before or whatever. Because my mom is doing dinner for me or because we have plans. So anyway what im trying to say is she will get over it &u should do what you had planned. You are married now & things change. Im very happy that my MIL is pretty easy & gets it. We get along very well. Im really lucky. I hope it all works out for you guys as well.

Moms and their baby boys....
It makes so much more sense to celebrate on the 30th with her -- she'd have so much more time to celebrate that way!
My mom's bday is also on the 28th btw.
Hopefully your DH can just talk to her and explain that they can still chat on the phone for hours that night, but he'd rather the family celebration be on the 30th.

ugh, that's annoying!... i'm sorry she's all bent out of shape, but in the end, she's gonna have to get over it! i'm sorry she's being that way though!

Re: i somehow just surprised my MIL....
I went through something similar. It's SO annoying but here's what happened and how I handled it.
DH's birthday was in November and I was SO excited to celebrate quietly at home together before heading out to a romantic dinner followed by a party at a lounge with 30 of our friends. I spoke to my MIL and we agreed she would host dinner for him the next day (Sunday).
She pitched a fit close to his birthday because she wanted to see him the day of and wanted us to come over so she could see him on his actual birthday.
I understand she loves her son but I was ANNOYED. Cut the chord, you know? I made it clear to DH I was annoyed and that it was going to mean we would have to run around and he was taking away my right as his wife to celebrate his birthday. He would be reunited with his whole family the next day.
He spoke with her. She was a little miffed but it was fine. DH and I had a romantic candle lit evening at home with cake and presents. He was really moved since he'd never had anything like that before. We then dressed up and went to dinner and dancing.
I rarely write this long but had to share. Stand your ground and don't let her take this special moment from you!

Re: i somehow just surprised my MIL....
Last year I wanted to throw DH (then FH) a birthday bbq and his mom was like 'oh well I planned on making dinner and having cake with the family etc'... so i just said to her.. Well we have our own house now and we are pratically married so the family can come to us, but I am throwing him a party here. She got the point and that was that. She showed up and had a great time! I say just be direct and say that you are married now, things are going to change.
