I thought NY had a law
dealing with child neglect. With the little boy being killed in BK I often wonder how the parents are not charged with neglect. I am a parent and would never let my young child walk alone. Parents that leave their children home alone are charged with neglect or child endangermentWhile I am so sorry for the parents loss I feel like it is their responsibilty to keep their children safe as well.
Not meant to piss anyone off just thinking about this a lot today

Re: I thought NY had a law
this is a tough one... i remember seeing a story on the today show a few years ago about someone in the city who would let their young child (maybe 7?) ride the subway alone, and I know that caused a stir. But then again, nothing had happened to that boy. But it did bring up the debate of how old is old enough for a child to travel alone.

Re: I thought NY had a law
I'm going to have to respectfully disagree. This case is particularly heartbreaking because everyone involved did the right thing.
There is a no manual for parenting. I was walking home by myself at that age. It was in fact about 7 blocks, just as in this case. Many kids do. This was Lieby's first time being allowed to walk alone after he pleaded with them. I'm sure it wasn't the easiest decision but his parents compromised with him and agreed to meet him halfway. They practiced the route together.
The mother waited and after an hour she immediately sprung into action. The community searched. The police acted quickly. They were able to find the suspect by wednesday morning when soooo many missing child cases go unsolved.
Lieby, as well did the right thing. He got lost and asked an adult for help. It is sad that even that could put a child in danger.
It is my opinion that everyone did the right thing in this case except that sick ******* Aron.
I can only imagine the devastation that his parents must be feeling right now. By all accounts, they were a loving, close family in a tight community. They will be punishing themselves for the rest of their lives and I don't agree with people who are blaming them (i'm not suggesting that you are). The only person to blame in THIS case IMO is the killer. He is a piece of sh it and would have done it to another child - maybe a child playing in front of his yard, or a child that was sent to get some milk from the corner store, etc. the scenarios are endless but my point is, all those parents who allow their kid to play in the front yard, go to the corner, etc should be charged with neglect? This kind of crime can happen to ANYONE and that's the scary part.

We just had this conversation at work yesterday. I said 8,9 even 10 I think is too young to just walk alone. Maybe Im just overprotective but Id rather be safe than sorry.

ITA... I was talking to DH about this last night and I can't imagine my nieces/nephews who are 8,9,10 years old walking anywhere by themselves.
DH lived in Brooklyn - and he WAS walking at that age by himself and even he said it was scary.. but a necessity. He said he'd never let our nieces/nephews do it now.

Re: I thought NY had a law
big fat ITA with the above.I was alowed to take my baby brother out by our bldng at 7 yo. I was treated as an adult and my parents were proud of me. was that neglect? I dont think so.
the only person (if we can even call this sick twisted thing that) to blame is the murderer. this def can happen to anyone and that is the scary part.
my heart goes out to the poor family

I took public transpotation alone from the age of about 9 or 10. Maybe it was a different time than. But there were no worries and there were no problems. Considering I got my Aunt Flo around 10 years old, I thought I was an adult woman.

I never understood that...I was a child...no need to deal with AF at that age..I was jealous of my friends that didn't get it until 14 or so. They grew taller and didn't have to deal with being in elementary school and having AF. I guess the grass is always greener...

Its very different growing up in the boros, especially an insular community like boro pk, than growing up in the burbs. Kids walk home from school very early and thats normal. I dont think it was neglect at allEta there is no law on leaving your kids home alone at a particular age

I think I was reading too many Judy Blume books at that age. I wanted boobs and my period.
I only got one so far and I'm still waiting on the other

Re: I thought NY had a law
My parents were overprotective, but in my neighborhood (Queens) plenty of kids did walk home alone at that age. It wasn't seen as a big deal. In the boros it's much more of a neighborhood 'everyone knows everyone' feel than in the suburbs sometimes, so I think people have a different mindset.

Eta there is no law on leaving your kids home alone at a particular age
Ii femember walking to elementary w 3 other kids goingto my school wwhich was about 5-6 blocks away. Buddy system should always be used w young kids if possible
Im a sw'er and id call acs if a child under 13 was left home alone unsupervised. I actuallythought that was the law.
I was a latchkey kid, but my neighbors looked out for all the kids on the block. We all knew eachother feom just living and interacting daily. Unfortunately, its not like that anymore.

I dont believe there's a specific law because there are very mature 10 yo and very immature 13 yo. unless somethings changed in the past three years when I learned about it. It really depends on the kids maturity level. In the neighborhood I work in bk, 8 year olds go grocery shopping on their own. Not sure if I agree with it, but not sure if its grounds to call acs.

Re: I thought NY had a law
They do have a neglect law, and its definately not going to be implemented if a child just walks home alone from school and one unfortunate occassion and this occurs....The parents have suffered such a loss, i doubt any charged will be pressed on them.
I agree with most of the posters i dont think id let my child walk home alone in the 5 boroughs, too much traffic, weird ppl , etc......

Re: I thought NY had a law
If this Mother gets charged for letting her kid walk home alone at 9 but Casey Anthony can wait 31 days without reporting her child missing and go SCOTT free, well then...I agree with a lot of the people who say it's not a big deal. Buddy system is a good idea though.

I would be more afraid of my child walking alone in the suburbs. There's no one out on the streets. Only that random weirdo walking. I'm not talking about a main street, to clarify.
Normally, it's not a big deal for a kid to walk alone, especially in a close knit community like that in Brooklyn. I was 9 when I was allowed to walk home from school, the first time I did get lost but I asked someone with children to walk me home. I live in Queens, I have for almost 29 years. This was an isolated incident.
... And no, I don't think for a second it was neglect, not for a second. These poor people have been through enough. Leave them alone.
