If I might be so bold as to ask...

Original post by LImom

if your parents paid for a good part of your wedding, did they also give you a wedding present? I don't know what to give my son and his wife next week, and we are paying for all the guests on our side, including his friends, about 45 of them. I would appreciate any suggestions you may have.

My parents paid for the reception, the band, my dress (and shoes, tiara, veil, hair, makeup), my IL's gave us our honeymoon.

My mom paid for my shower and gave me a ton of stuff there and as a 'wedding gift' my parents gave us four place settings of our china and all of our crystal.

I must second the statement about parents being amazing. Mine are, and again not because of their monetary generosity, but because of all of their thoughtfulness throughout the whole process.

LIMom: perhaps some of their fine china or a collectible would be a nice gift. But remember that it doesn't have to cost a lot to be meaningful.

My parents gave us a sizable check to use as we wanted for the wedding. The day of the wedding they gave us another $1000.

My in-laws contributed nothing towards the wedding and also gave us a $1000 check at the wedding but asked for $700 of it back a few weeks later....Don't ask

My suggestion is to give what you can afford. Your already paid a good part so a token gift would be great.

My DH's parents paid for the 'FLOP' (Flowers, Limos, Orchestra, Photographer) That was about 5,000. They gave us 10,000 when we first got engaged. My father was very ill and wound up dying 6 months before the wedding. My mother paid for my dress (1,000) I paid for the remainder of the wedding.

On our first anniversary, my mom gave us $1,000 as a wedding gift. She thought it was better to wait and enjoy it later rather then when you receive all of your other gifts.

My parents and DH's parents shared the cost of the wedding. My parents did not give us a present in addition, which was absolutely fine - we didn't expect one. Over the time we were engaged, they had bought us a wonderful engagement present, shower gifts, as well as a whole bunch of stuff for our apartment. DH's parents gave us a large check to go toward our bedroom set.

I won't ask - but boy is it tempting. LOL!!!! You never know with people.

I hope to find something today that shows thought and sentimentality. No one expects anything more, I'm sure. And yes, I did forget about the very generous gift at her shower.
Thanks everyone, for all your advice and responses.
