A friend of Luke's is getting married next month. I was invited to her shower but Im not going - but I am sending a gift.
She has several registries but virtually nothing that is something within my price range (about 75 bucks) or something I think makes a good gift alone.
I tend to like to do 'theme' gifts. Since none of her registry items work, I was thinking of doing a Honeymoon Survival Kit - which would include things like sunglass, suntan lotion, flip flops, a travel book about her destination, and other stuff that she and her hubby could use on their trip inside a beach bag.
Question - what would prefer?
a) Gift from registry
b) Honeymoon Survival Kit

She has nothing on her registry for $75 bucks Whoa she has expensive taste.
I would like the survival kit. I like to get gifts like that. That may be just me. I think its a nice idea.

I'd prefer a gift from the registry. Even if its something that doesn't seem to be a good gift alone, it is something they need. Or, if you really don't like the gifts, do a gift certificate for the store they registered at so that they can put it towards the larger ticket items that they don't receive.
I received three honeymoon travel bags, none of which I actually used on my honeymoon. Friends lended me a travel book, and I got another from the library. We both have sunglasses and sandals. While I think your gift is very cute and thoughtful, it just seems impractical.

I think the survival honeymoon kit is a cute idea and honestly if there is nothing on the registry in your price range, I would definitely go the theme route. I got nothing like that for my shower but think it is a great idea.

THanks girls - keep the responses coming. I know I would prefer the honeymoon bag but if the majority says registry, I'll go with that.
PS: She does have stuff on her registry for less than $75 but its complete random stuff like a pot holder or an office waste basket, etc.. The other stuff on her registry that was right priced was all purchased before I got the invite.

The Honeymoon Kit, and I know you'd make it nicely.

I would say the Honeymoon kit. It would be something totally unexpected.

I tend to buy something that is very random like the things you mentioned and build around that. I love baskets and the like...so if they only had a pot holder or something like that I would do a kitchen theme...this way she gets the potholder plus kitchen gadgets which add up to the 75 i would have paid and she gets special things as well.

Personally, I would prefer the kit...but I have to be honest with you - I have been to more showers than I care to mention in the past year, and there was a honeymoon survival kit at every one of them (except my OWN - go figure!!!!! ). They were always done by close friend/family member of the bride - usually in the BP.
I wouldn't do it cause I'd be afraid someone else would.

Yikes! I thought my honeymoon survival thing was a fairly unique idea! Id never seen one before I did one for a friend. I definitely didnt get one :(
I would love to do a kitchen gadget basket or any other theme idea around a registry item but she literally has NOTHING to work with. Everything is completely one off. Plus, they have been living together for years so she doesnt need anything thats not specifically on her registry.
Anyone have some non registry unique gift they got at their shower that they liked?

Stef..one of the cutest gifts I got was a table basket. It's a bread basket filled with a table cloth, napkins, placemats, napkin rings, and a small flower centerpiece in it. It was really cute and no one else got me anything like it. You can get neutral color linens, and an averaged size table cloth.

Stef, do you know her like that to give her a personal gift?? or do you only know of her thru Luke. I would say if its not a personal friend get her something off the registry. If not do the bag.

wow - $75 is a nice shower gift - I'm surprised nothing is less than that on her registry.
If you know the location of her honeymoon (and that a beach bag would be appropriate) I'd say go with the bag.
I enjoyed getting a few surprises like that for my shower - my BM made a bag for me for Hawaii and I loved it!

Sonicstef- Hey, I could be wrong - maybe nobody else has seen it, it just seems commonplace amongst my friends (there is a circle of about 10 of us)...good luck with it...

Re: If it were you - what would you prefer?
Ive known the girl for years but we are not really close. Normally I would get the registry stuff but sending a box with just random stuff seems so odd...like no thought went into the gift at all... that I just picked out the cheapest stuff on her registry (she will have no way of knowning there was virtually nothing left by the time i got the invite) and threw it into a box..know what i mean?
So Im trying to avoid that by doing something more personalized. But I dont know her well enough to get that perfect something.
Pls keep the suggestions coming.

Would you consider something totally different?? Do they drink wine?? Cause I made a nice gift for a friend one time and the wine doesnt have to be expensive..let me know!

Re: If it were you - what would you prefer?
I know what you mean - I hate buying random things off the registry like an iron and spatula! But I'd be less worried if I didn't know her too well.
I also got a nice tea set basket that I thought was cute - it included the tea pot and 6 cups and saucers, but it's very girly and not for everyone. It's definitely harder when a couple lives together first! Just about everything like this you buy them you don't necessarily 'need' but still getting it is nice!

Re: If it were you - what would you prefer?
I think it depends on how well you know her. Is she only Luke's friend, or do you know her pretty well? I think non-registry gifts make sense when you know a person well. I really love your idea, it's useful and practical. But, if you don't know her that well, I would stick to the registry and go ahead and get a few random items that add up to your price range.
