where would you want to live???
Also, would you ever buy a house in a different state just b/c it's cheaper?? Would that be incentive for you to move?
I love NY and I love being close to the ocean, but I don't think I could live anywhere else besides California. It's so expensive here , but I love it here. If we found an affordable house in CA or maybe PA I may think about moving. I just know whatever happens, I want to retire in CA.

We are thinking of moving to PA, CT or NC or possibly upstate NY. DH works for the post office so he may be able to get a transfer (depending on if there is one available).
I lived in a 2 bedroom apartment until I was 17 with my parents 2 sisters and grandmother. I hope I can do better for my children and I can not do that on LI.

I want to move out of NY so badly but DH feels differently
My a$$ would move so fast back out to Cali it's not even funny. I love it there. I have family there and I think about going back every single day.

I love NY, specifically Long Island, more specifically Suffolk County. I wouldn't consider moving for a second. I'd rather have a tiny house and be able to see my family & friends daily, than a house out of state and rarely see them. I don't like rural or urban, so Suffolk is a good fit for me. We actually hope to even stay right in East Islip.

I used to say the same thing... until I met Dh. lol. New York was my life - i love the ocean and everything about the Island. I was firm that I'd NEVER move away no matter what. And then i fell in love and realized that being with my husband was so much more important than the state I was living in. Now I'm in Colorado. We don't mean to make this place our home (it's not where we want to raise our future children) but Long island is tooooo expensive and I do not want us to struggle (esp since I plan to not work when i have kids - DH & I both want me to be a stay-at-home full time mother). So we're planning on moving maybe to Pennsylvania, as close as we can get to New York without actually living there. Where we're looking at now is only about a 3-4 hr drive. Perfect
But I'd go anywhere with DH. Even if it meant living in a hut in Africa. I wouldn't be happy (and he would know it! lol) but i'd go. He means more to me than anything. And i know that he would likewise go anywhere with me.

I do agree with this. I like Suffolk County, but it's too expensive. I like Queens, but that's also expensive and you don't get a lot for what you pay for. I also agree with the family thing. I moved to MI for a year, and came back b/c I missed my family. I would only move to CA if my family also came with me lol

If I didnt care about moving so far away from my family and friends I'd move out of NY in a hearbeat.
I'd move to Florida without a second thought, most likely Keywest.
Cost of the homes are much higher here but if that hasnt forced me to leave yet it probably never will

Las Vegas, NV (Summerlin area) where my sister lives. Houses are cheap, nice and everything is brand new.

DH and I love NY, but our dreams to be homeowners here is just to stressful. Homes are so over priced for the size, and the worst part about NY is taxes. DH and I are hoping to move in 2010-2011 to NC partly because DH wants to go to Duke Law School but mainly because we can afford a home. For 250,000 we can buy a big 4 bedroom home, and the taxes will be about 1700 for the entire year.

We will most likely stay on Long Island for a long time. But I would like to live somewhere else someday. I really like San Diego, it's a lot like Long Island except the weather is beautiful all year long!

Honestly I don't think I would be as happy living anywhere but NY, specifically where I live, it is suburban/urban....it is in Queens, but kinda has a LI vibe.
I have lived upstate for college. Italy when I studied abroad. My parents have a place in Florida and I have stayed there a lot,and travled to many different places and EVERYTIME I step foot back into my neighborhood my soul feels good. This may sound cheesy or insane but it isjust how I feel, I am very attached to my town and family and friends here. I would never choose move more than 30 minutes away.

As morbid as it sounds, as long as our parents are around, we won't move anywhere else. At some point down the line I'd be willing to move (but still not too far)... maybe CT. We already have a few friends up there. I don't know if I could ever see myself leaving the east coast!

We live on LI but are seriously considering a move to New Hampshire or western Maine. The reason? We would have to rent for another 5 years probably in order to afford a home on LI, and even then, taxes and what not would make it VERY hard. I'm talking a small house too. The cost of living in NH is soooo much less and the salaries are not that much different than here - you still 'make out' in the end there.
We've been talking about this for YEARS and yes it will SUUUUCK to be far from my family - but we are not going very far - it's a weekend trip. I would never move to CA or somewhere that I could not see them often. I think our lives, in the end, will benefit from owning our own home - having a yard for a child to play in, for my dog, etc.

i really do feel 'there's no place like new york'..because u get the best of everything...i love the beach, the'country'(lol), the city..and most of all - the seasons...
however - i have to say - with DH joining the coast guard, i am really REALLY excited to see where our first move will be :) ..and so on for the next few years. Once we have children it would be nice to settle back in NY and be near family..so if we don't fall in love with another place - odds are down the road we'll be back...
but hey - for the next few years I am totally up for the adventure & seeing all kinds of new places w/the man that i love

Re: If you didn't live in NY , or the state you currently live in..
as a kid i never thought i would leave Staten Island and when my parents moved to florida i was so pisssssed and i swore that i would NEVER EVER move there (too hot, too boring, too many old people and rednecks is what i would say).......then DH and I visited them and we had a whole new perspective - by that time we were on our own living together and we really were able to see the difference in lifestyle we could have down south....
so we plan on moving to florida - we arent moving that close to my parents/grandparents/sister though - we will move 30-40 minutes away - so we'll really be on our own - we joke that we are pioneers
i have the attitude that i have to do what is good for me and DH and our future family - i want to raise my kids myself and i rather that than live up in NY and have to continue to work so a stranger can raise them - to me its not worth it just b/c we have 'family' here (just DH parents and sister really) and our parents and siblings are not my #1 priority -my #1 is DH and our future together ....as far as family we can visit and still keep in touch - we only see our extended family on holidays as it is and i've been without my parents for 4 years already and its not that bad....
i cant wait to get out of NY - and what is great is that we can still come up to visit NY whenever we want b/c DH's parents and sister are here - i know we'll miss them but we'll still visit - i do that now with my parents and its not bad at all....
there are so many places DH and i would consider living - like i said we are pioneers
we chose florida b/c we can be closer to my family when we have kids (DH's mom already has his sister's kids so its not like she'll be missing out on grandkids alltogether and i rather be close to my own mother when its time for that which DH totally understands) and secondly b/c DH can transfer his job to orlando....
hopefully we make the move in 2009!! sometimes soon i

I'd leave NY in a heartbeat. I told DH i'd move to Philly or even MD, where all his friends live. His best friend has a house in MD that is huge, amazing, with like 6 bedrooms and an acre of land - under $400k. We'd still be close enough to our families. DH says I would hate it; he's probably right b/c NY is all I know.
But he'll never leave and I really think my family would KILL me since they are all in LI and I'm in queens and they think I'm far enough as it is
I think I just need to get a job outside of NYC. This city is making me more of a nasty bittch than I already am. 12 years of commuting will do that, and I'm only a third through life so there will be a LOT more years.
