If you didn't live in NY , or the state you currently live in..
Original post by SFAR89
where would you want to live???
Also, would you ever buy a house in a different state just b/c it's cheaper?? Would that be incentive for you to move?
I love NY and I love being close to the ocean, but I don't think I could live anywhere else besides California. It's so expensive here , but I love it here. If we found an affordable house in CA or maybe PA I may think about moving. I just know whatever happens, I want to retire in CA.

i really do feel 'there's no place like new york'..because u get the best of everything...i love the beach, the'country'(lol), the city..and most of all - the seasons...
however - i have to say - with DH joining the coast guard, i am really REALLY excited to see where our first move will be :) ..and so on for the next few years. Once we have children it would be nice to settle back in NY and be near family..so if we don't fall in love with another place - odds are down the road we'll be back...
but hey - for the next few years I am totally up for the adventure & seeing all kinds of new places
you are SO lucky. I think that will be an amazing and fun experience!

For now we are planning to stay on Long Island. But in the future, who knows. My parents plan to move OOS and the cost of living is less. I can't compare what I'm used to, to something I don't know. The cst of living is lower in the south but will I really enjoy myself, make the same money, etc.? I don't know what the future will hold for us. I'm contracted to work at my hospital for another 3 years, after that who knows? DH and my future family is the #1 priority.

I love it here in Pa., but if I were to move it would be to N.Carolina, or Fort Meyers Fl.

I grew up in Southern CA... so I'd move back there if I had to leave Long Island.
Though I will always be where my family is (reasonable driving distance)

I actually never intended to stay in NY this long! I came here for school. I ahve a love/hate relationship with NY. I wouldnt mind moving. I like new places. Dh is in music, so I told him I'd move to Nashville or LA. I also wouldn't mind Chicago, Mimai, or Boston.

I would never leave ny! I just love it here too much! I love how you get the best of everything...the beaches, beautiful landscaping, change of seasons..and of course I love living in a suburban area. I don't think I could ever get used to a rural area. I also have a lot of family and friends here that I would not want to leave!!! Maybe in the future when we retire, we might move. We actually joked about moving to moorea or bora bora (its beyond gorgeous) but we'll see...

I wouldn't want to live in any other US state. I've traveled a lot to many other big cities and they just don't have the feel NY does. You can't compare anywhere to NY. I'd have to move out of the country to Sydney, Australia. Now that's comparable to NY!

I would never buy a house in a different state just because it's cheaper. I would get a second job just to stay here, close to my family.
If I could move anywhere WITH my family, I'd live in either Italy or the Caribbean!

DH and I moved to NC--in large part because he went to college here and LOVED it and the cost of living was so good! It was the only place we could buy a house responsibly at this point in our lives. I love that it has the change of seasons, still, but the weather in general is so nice.
If we were to move, I would love to move closer to the coast in the Carolinas...or maybe the mountains.

Re: If you didn't live in NY , or the state you currently live in..
I would move to Florida, bec of the weather. Actually DH's and my fantasy when we retire is to have a place here (for May-June) and to live in Fla for the rest of the year. I hate winter with a passion....but right now, I don't know. There are so many other things to consider besides the cost of a home. Family, friends, your job, even doctors. And the schools here are supposed to be far better than those in places like NC and FLA as far as kids are concerned....of course the taxes and house prices are insane here too So I guess to answer your question, no, the cost of a house is not incentive enough for us to move. There would have to be more, such as another family member already there and something else (don't know what lol). My sister and her DH have had their house for sale for the last year and a half. They want to move to NC just because they think living there is cheaper and the cost of houses is far less. No family members or even anyone they know lives there...so I don't know if she is thinking it through clearly or not. I will really miss her if she moves, so much that I force myself not to think about it.

I love NY, specifically Long Island, more specifically Suffolk County. I wouldn't consider moving for a second. I'd rather have a tiny house and be able to see my family & friends daily, than a house out of state and rarely see them. I don't like rural or urban, so Suffolk is a good fit for me. We actually hope to even stay right in East Islip.
I feel the EXACT same way about what you said 'rather live in a smaller house and still have our families and friends close by' rather than live in a real big house but be far away from all those we love. Thats just me though. Also for me, i want my kids to live somewhere they are surrounded by people of all backgrounds and learn about different cultures. I didn't grow up with my grandparents nearby, they live overseas. They came here and visited and stayed a while but wasn't the same. I wish I had grown up with them. So for my kids, i want to give them that and have their families around them. It wasnt just my grandparents but most of my family is overseas. Its funny bc i see all these ppl with big families and wish i had that, then i remember I do have a huge family just not around me and visiting here and there just isn't the same. I wish i had that.
i do like urban so thats my difference. It's just hard to adjust to something so different from what you have been used to. Whether you lived in a very urban area and then living somewhere very different, or somewhere more suburb like and having to get used to urban life.
ETA: HOWEVER, I would consider moving to Europe but temporarily.

I am down in Northern VA right outside of D.C and would give anything to be back home. My teaching salary here stinks and the cost of living is the same. Plus I swear the traffic is worse than in Ny. We really are hoping to move back to the 'tri state area' but we just don't know what we are going to do b/c of DH's job.
We would also consider living in Hawaii for a few years, DH's family is there and his company has an office there. We always talk how amazing it would be to have beach babies.

DH and I talk about moving to NC or Florida. I have both of my grandparents and quite a few family members in Florida and no family, but a good set a friends in NC. DH doesn't mind the idea of moving, but I think it will be harder for him to leave his family. They have lived in the same house since he was born and have no intentions of EVER moving they are the complete opposite of my parents who would more than likely soon follow if we made the move. (I know some of our close friends talk about making the move as well.)
Personally, I would like my children to grow up with lots of family around because I did when I was younger and when we moved to NY it was such a big difference not to see your grandparents and cousins almost daily, it took a long time for us to get adjusted.

I don't know if I could ever leave NY. There's too much going on in the city. Maybe I'd go to the San Francisco bay area. But I would love to live in the mountains somewhere like Colorado. I always thought it would be cool to live on a ranch with horses.

I love Cali too and we want to move there one day. I also like AZ.
I would hate to be far from my family but DH's family lives on the west so that would be nice.
Also my sister lives in NC and would love to move there too! Maybe for a few years!
I FORGOT TO MENTION...Dh gets moved every few years for his job so he has lived in 4 different states and he said this is one of the worst places to live and ITA. I have lived in 2 other places and agree there is better out there. We like moving and deal with being away from family. Its hard but again we deal. As for now, we are near my family which is nice but not for long.

i see a lot of saying you wouldnt want to leave your families - i guess its different when you come from a big family that gets along
