Re: if youve been to puerto rico... hotel recs
I've been to the El San Juan twice (most recently on my HM) and I love it, even though some of the extra services (dry cleaning, parking, wifi, hotel bar) are expensive. The restaurants inside are better. They have one called Koco which was amazing and had great martinis for $10, the bars in the hotel lobby (there are 3, it's a very ornate lobby) were charging $12 for a rum and coke. But the rooms are great and the pool is to die for.
However we did look around for other places to stay the next time we go. The Intercontinental is right next door so we had a look around the lobby and at the pool. It's very nice and we might go with them next time just to change it up/if it's cheaper. They have a casino and several restaurants on the premises - I remember seeing Ruth's Chris and a Japanese one. They also have a cafe right on the beach (some of the tables are in the sand!) called Ciao Mediterranean Café. We had lunch there. It was decent and not expensive, a nice shelter from the rain, most of the seating is under an awning. I heard the ladies at the table next to us raving about the daiquiris and margaritas too.
Have fun. :)

Re: if youve been to puerto rico... hotel recs
We went there on our minimoon, and stayed at the Ritz Carlton San Juan, which is right next door to the El San Juan. We definitely had some issues with check in and check out. Our reservation was somehow canceled, so we were lucky that they were able to find us another room. Can you imagine if they couldn't and we were already there??? Luckily we were upgraded to a room with a balcony, so it worked out. They also didn't apply our room credit to our bill at check out either, so we had to convince them that was a part of our original reservation too. It wasn't smooth. The restaurants there were a little pricey too. But the rooms were very clean, and the beach was really nice there, and they were very accommodating with the chairs and towels.
I'm not sure if we'll ever go back to PR, but if we do, we'll probably try the El San Juan instead.

Re: if youve been to puerto rico... hotel recs
I've stayed at the RItz Carleton and The Water Club...would recommend both.
For our HM we stayed a few days at the Intercon. it was really nice. There is a wonderful traditional puerto rican restaurant right across the street Mi Casita it is great and really inexpensive. I think I have pics in my albums. If not they are posted on FB.
ALL The restaurants in all the hotels on the strip are really expensive we went to the places across the street. Our first morning we went to breakfast in the hotel and it was $50+ for a buffet we never did that again. lol

Re: if youve been to puerto rico... hotel recs
DH and I stayed at the Intercontinental a few years ago for 1 night before a cruise. I guess they were overbooked and since we were only staying 1 night they put us in the honeymoon suite. It was gorgeous, as I am sure the normal rooms are as well.
