I'm pregnant! Baby in NYC?

I'm pregnant! Baby in NYC?

We have an unexpected addition joining our family...

Has anyone here had a child and stayed in NYC. We're worried about the cost.

My hubby is supposed to start grad school next year, but he may ask for a one year deferral.

We are now feeling pressure to buy a place, start saving for college, etc...and we'll be doing it on a small income for a few years while he's in school....

We REALLY don't want to leave the city, preferrably staying in Brooklyn...

Lots of questions, anyone out there got advice?

First off congratulations! Second off -- there are many young married couples that have children in NY, so this must be possible. I think money will be tight -- but you can do it!

The man in the cube behind me had a kid and they live in the city -- though they both work.

Does you DH's school offer married couple's housing? That will be the cheapest thing to do. Some times it is quite nice.

If you think you can live in a one bedroom with the baby, then I think you could stay in new york city (as in Manhattan)-- otherwise you should really consider moving/staying in some of the more suburban area. Me and my DH have been looking informally for a two bed room -- we can't find one that we can afford in the city (and that is based on us both working). Where as queens and parts of Brooklyn have better deals.

Some other things to consider -- low income or middle income housing programs. They usually have long waiting lists but it never hurts to explore. You can start you research on www.NYC.gov

I think the best approach would be to do some research around what your actually costs will be (food, clothing (which is high with a new born since they grow so fast), 1 time purchases (stroller, crib), child care, rent) and your actually income. I am sure there are sites that can help you estimate the costs.

Also -- what type of help will you get? Will you get paid maternity leave or just disability? How long can you stay out and keep your job?

I don't have children but I would have absolutely no qualms about raising children in NYC. I don't subscribe to the belief that you have to move your life into a suburb just b/c you've had a baby. There are limitless resources, culture and opportunities for children in the city and thousands upon thousands of other happy parents here to prove it.

Where in Brooklyn are you? Park Slope and Carroll Gardens are children meccas.
