Re: I'm sorry I just had to...

it's called parents who don't set boundaries for their kids..

i have been out with my bro & SIL and their 3 kids who know their expected behavior in a restaurant includes using a quieter voice and remaining in their seats...and i've been out with parents who are oblivious as their kids run around & drive other people nuts (and i want to hide under the table)....i blame the parents...kids only learn what they are taught and what is expected of them...

Re: I'm sorry I just had to...

are you looking to cause more drama lea hahaha

well since i brought up the kids in restaurant thing I will post about this.

I read the article, and the girl did make a good point that if the kids are screaming, banging stuff and running around and the parents dont even tell them to stop then sorry that is wrong. Shouldn't you tell your kid something if they are acting that way whether its at a restaurant or elsewhere. Of course these kids are going to do keep doing it. Some parents say theres nothing they can do so why bother. I was actually watching the nanny recently and these parents didnt know what to do about their out of control kids and whenever they went to restaurants they were all over the place, screaming and just being bad. The nanny told the parents what to do and also worked with the kids for a week and then they went out to eat and WOW guess what, they were actually well behaved.

Do i expect a kid to be perfectly quiet and still at a restaurant? NO but at the same time if your kid has been screaming for the past 10 minutes and throwing things then at least an effort to tell them to stop. Yes i know that once you become a parent its all about the kid, thats obvious, but doesnt mean that everybody around you will think its all about YOUR kid. There are some people who dont even like kids, there are others who are young and single and really have no interest and there are even other parents like said in the article that are going out to actually have a night away and just enjoy themselves.

During the planning, there was a time that Dh an I were just working, not going out and saving money, we had alot of stress and decided its been a while and we needed to go out and just have a real nice dinner and focus on eachother. Well this couple sits next to us with their kid. Now i love kids so at first i was waving at the kid and didnt mind that it was sitting next to us. Within a few minutes this kid went crazy, was yelling the whole time, yanking everything off the table. Since they sat RIGHT next to us, i couldnt even have a conversation with DH bc i couldnt hear over a screaming child. The mother didnt try to stop the kid which is why i got mad. Not only that but since the kid was right by us and yanking stuff off the table and throwing things too i kept having to be careful it doesnt throw something at me, and there were times it threw things right by me. Needless to say we barely were able to talk to eachother and have a nice dinner just focusing on eachother. There are some people who arent going out just to eat something but for the experience. There might be a couple who havent gone out in a while, saved money to go out to a nice dinner and then the whole night werent able to even enjoy it, sorry i dont think thats right. Bring your kid to the restaurant that is fine, but if its screaming non-stop youre not going to try and stop it? and there have been times i went out to eat and it was late for a kid to be out, its 9pm-10pm, uhmmmm and you wonder why the kid is acting this way, the kid is tired and cranky so the kid is not even to blame, he/she should be in bed sleeping like they want to not sitting at a restaurant just bc the parents wanted to get out, so depending on the situation i think its wrong, other times its perfectly fine. Ive taken kids out to eat, ive gone to restaurants with kids and didnt have a problem with it. But I wouldnt just let it scream without saying something.

Re: I'm sorry I just had to...

I do agree with the article but I do also think people need to realize if they CHOOSE to eat out at a place like a pizzeria, then they shouldnt be surprised when kids are being loud. Now if youre eating at a restaurant then its a different story. I think childrens behavior at a restaurant has to be set by the parent, and when a parent ignores a child at a restaurant while theyre running around being unruly is just bad parenting. When my niece was younger, she was BAD in restaurants. And when she acted up my sister or myself would take her outside so as not to disturb everyone else eating. Like the article states, everyone else eating out is paying for their meal so its not right to think the world is revolving around you.

And yes Im starting drama because IM SO BORED and extremelty immature.

I excpect my kids to behave the same at friendlys as I do at Ruths Chris...
However do we goof around more at friendlys yes but they still no the line is there and not to cross it

if a kid is acting up and the parents are trying to handle it I feel badly and wish I could help

HOWEVER

If a kid or kids are behaving badly and the parents ignore it completly I want to punch them......

I do understnad the whole theray even if you punish them or yell etc its negative attention but still atention and if you ignore it they will stop

a resturant just isnt the place to teach them that

Exactly. Although we have more fun in a pizzeria or applebees, she still knows not to get up and run around in circles.

EXACTLY!!!! if im at a pizzeria or a kid friendly place then its expected and can't get mad. If im going somewhere that you know there will definitely be kids there, then it would be my fault if i actually got mad about it, i made the decision to go there knowing it. But yeah some restaurants where you dont normally see this is very different.

Re: I'm sorry I just had to...

We take Ella out & she is well behaved. But when she acts up, I tell her no. Or I bring her for a walk. And once, I left the restaurant because I DON'T want to upset people & I think it IS to others dining. So I was somewhat ok with this article until I got to this part:

'You made the choice to have children. That choice requires certain sacrifices. You might actually have to forgo that morning latte if it means you and your girlfriends fill one quarter of the coffeehouse with huge strollers filled with screaming babies. The guy trying to read The New York Times doesn't bring his howling dog with him. Why should you bring teething Chad?'

NOW....
A teething child is not the same as a poorly behaved child. And Starbucks is not the same as a restaurant. The stroller comment got under my skin, quite honestly That paragraph is when the author lost credibility in my eyes.

edited for typos.

Re: I'm sorry I just had to...

My niece and nephew are primes examples of good parenting and bringing your children out. I am not going to say they are perfect angels but my brother/sis in law have done what good parents all do - teach proper behavior and reinforce it. If one of them act up they bring them out of the room/situation and have a quite talk and say if you keep this up we are going out or leaving. I mean they had lunch at Tellers and people came up to us saying OH MY GOD didn't even know a kid not alone twins were in here (first and only time in Tellers and was horrified thinking about sitting with two kids both were 5 at the time).

Of course when they were under 5 we had them at family friendly places because kids sometimes are kids they laugh they want to play with toys, etc. But they never ran, screamed and threw food. And honestly no child should be doing that.

My point I guess what many people's feelings are if you know your kids have issues don't bring them out, if they are pretty well behaved then just deal with them if they act up and not simply ignore it thinking everyone else can zone out the restless kicking of chairs and screaming.

I find the most annoying place where a few parents think it is okay to have your child be a little brat is in a supermarket. ' I WANT A COOKIE', 'I WANT A PIECE OF CHEESE', I WANT, ETC. I worked in supermarkets and honestly its really annoying to see kids playing tag near a display and then knocking down everything and parents blame the workers or parents going to the counter asking for free items because their kid is hungry (sorry bring your own snacks don't expect a store to open a new package of product to feed your child because the samples we put out are not good enough for you) or being a shopper and having to deal with temper tantrums or screaming children. NOW that being said ( I want to emphasize this before a parent calls me out) I realize if your online the kid is hungry/tired and it is a infant I can deal with screaming. Infants do not understand that your on line so to me that is completely understandable and honestly sometimes I try to distract the infant while the mom tries to pay.

Honestly if I am at a kid friendly place, meaning crayons, kids menu, and its during the day, i will not get pissed if kids are acting up. Its fair game.

Now if i am at mortons on a saturday night, and there is a child screaming (i go there all the time) and this has never happend, i would be mad.

But diners, loud restaurants, friendlys, fridays, applebees, ihop, country kitchen, its fair game and kids come with the territory.

Re: I'm sorry I just had to...

Kudos to the chick who wrote this....I'm sorry, but I have a right to enjoy a meal in a restaurant without yelling and screaming and noise pollution. I also hold the parents responsible for behavior that goes unchecked. How else will they know what to do or not do if the parents won't teach them? Kids generally do what is expected of them.
DH and I were in Hawaii eating dinner on our HM. We were at a table right next to a koi pond. Across the pond from us was a bigger table with several families w/small children. One child got up and started to hang her doll over the pond's edge and almost fell in (we still couldn't tell at this point who the parents were). Then two more kids joined her. One of them got up and came over to our table and actually crawled under our table and hung out over the pond trying to get the fish' attention for like 5 minutes, screaming!!! DH and I were floored, then started joking about how the parents were trailer ***** and how the parents probably had a twinkie wedding cake...I'm sorry, but are you kidding me??? Letting your kid crawl under someone else's table and risking that he's going to drown on top of that? I actually feel sorry for the kids because to me that is a form of neglect.
