My grandfather had one implanted (he has since passed ) The defibrilator did its job but he was already wayyyyy to sick for him to withstand another heart attack.
BUT he had it in a little over a year and in that time it worked twice with saving his life!!!!!

Re: Implantable Defibrillator?
With my grandfather, he had a pacemaker/defibrillator combo unit- he was more sore after the surgery but after a couple weeks, he didnt even notice that it was tehre.
they even used to check the batteries on it through the phone- he had some gadget he attached to him side of the phone and the cardiologist did the same and it read it through the phone line- very easy
i would think the only time it hurts is after the surgery and then if it has to 'shock' you- but its worth it- it restarted my grandfather's heart twice

Re: Implantable Defibrillator?
Im sorry to crash over here, but my best friend has had an implantable defibrillator for 3 years now...got it put in when we were 25. He said it was weird and uncomfortable at first, but he got used to it. He can do most of the normal things he did, minus very strenuous activity and heavy drinking. Please let me know if you have any specific questions that I can ask him!

Re: Implantable Defibrillator?
TY. I do have some questions. How scary/serious was the surgical procedure to put it in? I've read online that they use a local anasthetic and that you're awake for it. Also, when it does 'shock' you, does it hurt?

Re: Implantable Defibrillator?
My dad has one. He had one put in in 2002. It's actually gone off a few times, which is what it's supposed to do. One time his heart actually stopped while he was in the middle of talking to someone. Then all of a sudden it shocked him. When he went to the doctor, he takes a reading and that's how he found out his heart had stopped. It really is a life saving device.
It's an procedure where your in and out of the hospital. After so many years, they need to change the battery in it. He hasn't had to yet. They told him 5 years, but so far it's been 6.5. At that point it's like doing the procedure again. (He's a baby and freaks out about it.)
My dad has this machine at home that's like a telephone and I think it's twice a week that he puts the receiver up to the defibrillator and it sends the info to the doctor. It's pretty cool.
FM me or message me on FB if you have any other questions.
