do you think its ok for in-laws to ask what DH's salary is?
FIL asked DH what his salary is and DH told him nicely that it was personal bw himself and me, FIL got really upset and said that he will just find out on his own (DH works for local 3, so I guess if FIL has contacts he can technically find out what DH's position is currently making)
I am extremely upset and DH said im over-reacting

I think it's weird he cares so much, and ridiculous that he got so upset when your DH didn't want to tell him. Then to say 'well I can find out anyway' is just so ridiculously childish!!! If he could find out anyway, why didn't he 'find out anyway' on his own in the first place instead of making such a big deal out of it!
Your FIL kinda just pissed me off.

ITA. And I think it's kinda rude that he asked. While my DH and his family are very open about things like that, I think some things are meant to be private...

I don't see what the big deal is. My parents know how much I make, DH's parents know how much he makes...I think I would be offended if his parents asked ME how much I made, or if my parents asked him, but your own parents should be able to ask you that question without getting their heads ripped off IMO.

Re: in-law opinion
my inlaws know how much i make and my parents have an idea how much DH makes ( i dont even really know exactly since he works for family business= however his parents obviously know.) I don't care about in-laws knowing.. others maybe eventhough our salaries is nothing to be ashamed of

We had this happen last year where his family put him on the spot and asked and he answered but as a teacher, they can just look it up anyway. My mom has no idea what either of us make, I don't think it's anyone's business really but I don't see why they would get upset and want to go look it up in your hubby's case!

unless they are asking bc they are advising you bc you asked for some financial help i think its quite rude.

DH and I just had this conversation the other day. His parents ask the cost of EVERYTHING!!! If he tels them we just bbq-d a hamburger they'll ask how much the meat cost!
We had a talk about his parents the other day and I told him that our financial situation is OUR financial situation - none of their business. He agrees.
My mom would never ask what either one of us makes or what our mortgage is or what our house cost, etc.

I think its rude.....both my parents know what we make b/c we chose to tell them....but DH's parents have no clue and we both like to keep it that way. We don't want them knowing what we have or don't have, its not their business.

So your DH's father asked him what he makes? No I don't think its rude. Its his son he is asking about not your salary.
My parents know how much I make and I never thought it was rude for them to ask.

oh thats my MIL! I got the 'oh, so how'd you guys do on your taxes this year' a few times after we filed. All I told her was 'pretty good, we're getting a refund'. I know she wanted to know how much!
I keep finances close to the chest when it comes to my ILs. My parents wouldnt ask for any info, I volunteer it to my mom.
But its no ones business and i find it rude when people ask questions like that.

My parents know what DH makes... I told them at some point... Honestly, in my situation at least, I would thnk my parents would be asking to make sure we can afford the lifestyle we're living.... enough to buy a house, afford mortgage payments etc... since my job can disappear at any time
