I have a different opinion on this depending on whether this is Queens/any of the boroughs or LI.

Having grown up in Queens, and my parents are homeowners, the front of our home was NEVER our private property. A major hospital was 2 blocks away, so we NEVER had that spot. So I never adjusted to it as 'our spot'. ever.

Living on Long Island now, its seems pretty clear the the front of everyones house is the personal and private space. OF course when someone has parties and lots of cars come along, I think its OK that they park in the neighboring area, if that makes sense.
