In the Neighborhood - Poll

The following is at a 3-way intersection:

House A is a corner property.

House B is a corner property.

House C is about three times the size of house A and B. House C is in the middle of the block that it sits on.

People living in House C park in their driveway and in front of their house, they often park on the side of house A, sometimes in front of house A, and always park along the side of house B.

Question: (Which do you most agree with):

1-The people living in house C have a right to park anywhere they want, the street is not part of a homeowner's property, and if the space is there, I have a right to park there.

2-If I owned House A or B, I'd be annoyed by others constantly parking along my property, even if the street doesn't belong to me.

Re: In the Neighborhood - Poll

I think it's kind of an unwritten rule to try not to always park in front of neighbors houses. It is true they do not own the street, but I think it is a common courtesy.

Re: In the Neighborhood - Poll

I agree with #1 and 2. House C can park anywhere they want to, but if I were in House A or B, I'd probably get annoyed (especially if their cars were limiting my own parking spots). Is there no room by their house?

Living in the city (SF) - there are no such rules. You're happy to get a parking spot no matter where it is or who's house its in front of. But I remember at my parents house when there'd be a car in front of our house (there are virtually no cars ever parked in the street), I'd be like, who's car is that?

Re: In the Neighborhood - Poll

Depends on the availability of parking. If it's at a premium, like at Granny's house in Middle Village, I'd say whoever gets there first gets it and home ownership does not give you rights to the space in front of your house.

If it's in the suburbs and parking is plentiful I'd say it's polite to park in front of your own house, leaving your neighbors front space to them and their friends. I think I'd only get annoyed if someone was always leaving it empty in front of their own house, and making it look like I always had extra cars at my house.

Is it possible that they have illegal tenants at house C and they've told the tenants NOT to park in front of the house, so it's less obvious?

Personally, I think it's strange that they would choose a corner space over a middle of the block. When we lived in Mass. if we had to put one car in the street for any reason, we sometimes would park in front of the neighbors if someone was in front of ours and the only other option was right at the corner. DH always figured you had a better chance of getting your car hit at the corner.

Re: In the Neighborhood - Poll

I agree with Liz too. We currently have a neighbor who parks his big ugly white van on the street, kind of in the middle of our two houses. It's a big ugly eyesore, but I don't own the street and can't tell him not to park it there. But I wish he wouldn't. We both have huge driveways and 2 car garages. He still parks it in the street. It creates a hazardous because I can't see down the road when pulling out of my driveway.

One day my younger brother came over to help us out with some construction projects. He pulls up and parks in the spot where neighbor usually parks his van (he must have been out). We don't say anything to him, knowing full well that neighbor will come home and find his 'spot' taken.

Well, the neighbor had the nerve to come over, knocking on our door, telling my brother to move his car because it was parked in his spot!! Being the happy neighbors, obliged, but we have been furious to this day.... No sense in starting a fight with the neighbor, but let me tell you, he has some pair!!

Re: In the Neighborhood - Poll

I don't think it's a big deal to park on the side of house A or B but as a courtesy, I wouldn't park in front of my neighbors house if it can be avoided. But in some areas this is not possible.

Trish - There is no way I would have moved that car. First come, first serve!

Re: In the Neighborhood - Poll

Trish does the van have commercial plates on it? If so and he parks it on the street overnight it's illegal. You can call the police (you can do it without giving your name) and complain and he will be ticketed. We have the same problem with our next door neighbors who seem to think the whole street is their parking lot. They have 2 trucks with commercial plates and they constantly park them in the street. They make it hard for me to see oncoming traffic when I try to get out of my driveway and they know it. They used to park in the street overnight but since they got a few tickets they put the trucks in the driveway.

I agree with Liz D.

And Patricia, I can't believe the NERVE of your neighbor!!!
The street is fair game, regardless of where he usually parks.

Re: In the Neighborhood - Poll

#1 - and sort of agree with Liz D.

I don't understand this thing about not parking in front of peoples houses. What if there are three or more cars in your household, one goes in the driveway, one goes in front of your house, where is the other car going to be parked? It would have to be parked in front of someone elses house.

Trish- I would NOT have moved my brothers car. Are you joking me? This neighbor is so concerned about the parking arrangements on the block he obviously knows that this is a visitors car, I would have told him to get over it, he'll get his 'spot' when my brother leaves...

Re: In the Neighborhood - Poll

At least I know we have some support on this one. We don't want to argue with our neighbor, we are trying to be the good neighbors. I think what bothers us the most is the fact that this van is an eyesore.

And no - Wendy, it doesn't have commercial plates. He uses the van to take his two dogs to the park. The only time he parks it in the driveway is when we get snow because he doesn't want it plowed in. We're hoping one day it just dies!!

Re: In the Neighborhood - Poll

I think it's common courtesy to park in front of your house and I usually get annoyed only if there are no cars in front of this owner's house. However, if the street is full or if this house has a lot of cars and there is no other alternative, I would be annoyed but not as bad.
