Since DH is Catholic and I am Greek Orthodox, (both Christian religions) quite a few people (friends & family) have bluntly asked 'how are you going to raise your kids?'
DH & I were married in a Greek Church aso it's understood we'll be raising our babies Greek.
Now maybe I am being too sensitive to the ?, but I just feel that it's not what you say, it's how you say it.
Anyone else experience this?

Re: Inappropriate question?
since DH and i are both catholic, we havent experienced this... however, if we were of different religous backgrounds, i would be pretty peeved if someone asked this (depending on who it is of course... like close friends and family i wouldnt be mad about) its no ones business!

Re: Inappropriate question?
I completely agree it's who and how they ask.
Unless it was a good friend, i would never ask that question but we all know people ask many things they shouldn't.
I personally found that if i say 'oh I'd rather not discuss it' that shut people up and fast.

I think its annoying when people ask questions that are religion-based. I wouldnt answer it, or knowing the sarcastic a-hole I am I would answer atheist

Re: Inappropriate question?
I am in the opposite situation... I am catholic and DH is greek....we have not had that question since the wedding, but b/4 the wedding it was asked amillion times where we were getting married and the million questions that followed it. It was aggravating, but unfortunatly i had to deal with it.
I agree it is HOW they say it that would pi$$ me off!

Re: Inappropriate question?
I think people are just curious, I don't find anything majorly wrong with the question. I normally assume the child will be of the religious background in which both parents wed, so I wouldn't think about asking. If it friend and family I find it no big deal, same way if it were certain ppl. You know when it's the nosy one's that just want more info on your life; with those I would be bothered.

I can't relate bc Dh and I are both Roman Cathoilc BUT I can certaintly see you being sensitive to a question like that. I would only want or expect CLOSE family and friends to ask me that .

Re: Inappropriate question?
People should mind their own business. This IS a personal question because it has nothing to do with them. They should back off. I would just say in a very blunt tone that it is something that you wish not to discuss.

DH is Jewish and I'm methodist. And people ask all the time. Usually people are curious but sometimes I just want to say, none of your business.

Re: Inappropriate question?
we get that all the time too I was raised Lutheran and DH was raised Catholic. We were married in a Catholic church and we will raise our kids Catholic. I get from my family often but it really is none of their business.

Re: Inappropriate question?
I get this question becasue DH was baptized Catholic and I'm protestant. We got married in a non-denominational protestant church. For some reason I never get offended when it's asked I think it's just natural curiosity. We'll be raising our kids protestant.

Re: Inappropriate question?
me & dh are both Christians (non-denominational) so we haven't had this question, but honestly it would irritate me if I did! That's definitely an inappropriate thing to ask. Who is saying this? Unless it's an immediate family member (like a parent or sibling) it's just rude & unacceptable.
I don't know how you could answer though without either sounding like a jerk or just telling them your answer. Are you pregnant right now?? If not, then I'd probably say something simple & distant, like 'Oh there's time to worry about that.'

We are actually in the same situation as you. I am Greek Orthodox and DH is Catholic. We married in a Greek church but we are raising our children Catholic.
We had said it would be one or the other for each religion. It isn't fair in both our eyes to do just one way. Since the Catholic church recognizes the Greek marriage we are able to christen the baby in the Catholic church, but the Greek church would not have recognized the marriage and therefore christened the child. My mother isn't happy about it but it isn't fair to my MIL either so we decided on this.

Really? I never thought this was an odd ? If people ask tell them which religion or if you are not comfortable tell them its none of their business.

MY MIL doesn't even comment. I guess her feelings are as long as DH is happy...... and he is.
Without getting too personal, why do you think it's not fair for your MIL?
